The literature points that attachment is key mechanism in the development of people. According to the attachment theory, the experience of neglect, abandonment and other early traumas have influence on forming the dysfunctions of emotions and personality pathology. The aim of this article is the verification of the thesis about relation between attachment style and personality disorders. The analysis of results of 155 participants has been conducted (persons in the similar age, similar educational level, similar number of females and males). The diagnosis of personality disorder was based on SCID-II (Structured Clinical Interview for Axis – II), and additionally confirmed by PDQ-4 Hyler Inventory. To examine the attachment style the Plopa’s Attachment Styles Questionnaire and the Revised Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (ECR-R designed by Fraley et al., 2000), were used. The multiple regression model was used to test whether attachment styles maybe the predictors for personality disorders. The current results partly support the Lyddon and Sherry’ thesis. The main predictor for the relations between attachment and personality disorders is the anxious attachment style.

Attachment styles have been analysed in the context of development and functioning of children for decades. It seems interesting to analyse the attachment styles also in the context of adult life and psychological well-being. The article presents own research concerning the relationship between the attachment styles and mental health among young adults. There were 96 participants, 60 females and 36 males. The Attachment Styles Questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire (GHO-28), and an authorial survey were used. A statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between anxiousambivalent attachment style and somatic symptoms, unrest, depression symptoms, and avoidant behaviours. A secure attachment style correlated negatively with depression symptoms.

The article presents study results concerning secondary school students’ attitudes to life, which are treated as a mechanism of revealing aggressive behaviour in interpersonal relations. The following have been used: the concept of attitudes to life (scripts) in terms of transactional analysis, the concept of attachment styles by K. Bartholomew and L.M. Horowitz and the concept of aggressiveness as emotional reactivity. Analysis of the results has shown significant relationships (negative correlation) between the image of other people and aggressiveness and its dimensions (direct, indirect and verbal aggression, resistance, emotional irritability). Self-image is negatively correlated only with emotional irritability.

In the present article there has been described a connection between three dimensional model of empathy and attachment styles in close relationships of young adults. The study was conducted in a group of 120 people (60 women, 60 men; 38 cohabitant pairs, 22 marriages). The participants fi lled in the following questionnaires: The Scale of Empathic Sensitiveness, which measures empathic concern, personal distress and perspective taking, and The Questionnaire of Attachment Styles, which measures the following styles: the secure style, the anxious-ambivalent style and the avoidant style. The results indicate that there exists a connection between empathy and attachment styles. The secure style correlates positively with perspective taking, the anxious-ambivalent style correlates positively with empathic concern and personal distress, the avoidant style correlates positively with personal distress and negatively with perspective taking. The study revealed that women achieved higher scores on empathic concern and personal distress than men did, but no sex diff erences in manifested attachment styles were observed. Moreover, the type of relationship (marriage vs. cohabitation) diff erentiated scores on the anxious-ambivalent style and personal distress dimension, where cohabitants scored higher.

W niniejszym artykule opisano związek między trójwymiarowym modelem empatii a stylami przywiązania w bliskich związkach młodych dorosłych. W badaniu wzięło udział 120 osób (60 kobiet i 60 mężczyzn; 38 związków kohabitacyjnych i 22 związki małżeńskie). Uczestnicy badania wypełnili następujące kwestionariusze: Skalę Wrażliwości Empatycznej (SWE) mierzącą empatyczną troskę, osobistą przykrość i przyjmowanie perspektywy oraz Kwestionariusz Stylów Przywiązaniowych (KSP) mierzący przynależność do jednego ze stylów: bezpiecznego, lękowo-ambiwalentnego oraz unikowego. Wyniki badania wskazują istnienie związku między empatią a stylami przywiązania. Styl bezpieczny dodatnio koreluje z wymiarem przyjmowania perspektywy, styl lękowo-ambiwalentny dodatnio koreluje z wymiarem empatycznej troski i osobistej przykrości, a styl unikowy koreluje dodatnio z osobistą przykrością i ujemnie koreluje z przyjmowaniem perspektywy. Badania wykazały następujące różnice płciowe: wyższe wyniki w wymiarach empatycznej troski i osobistej przykrości osiągnęły kobiety aniżeli mężczyźni.

This article is concerned with the relationship between adult attachment styles and generalized negativistic social beliefs (i.e. pessimistic expectations concerning human nature and interpersonal relations). Two general dimensions of attachment styles, avoidance and anxiety, are considered to be manifestations of an individual’s image of other people and of the self, respectively. We suggest that both dimensions may be a substantial basis for formulating negative beliefs about the social world. Firstly, we believe that a high level of negativistic social beliefs can be positively predicted by the growth of avoidance (negative image of others) and anxiety (negative image of self). Secondly, we formulate an expected interaction effect. Although the nature of such an interaction is ambiguous, it may be argued as having a synergistic as well as antagonistic pattern. These hypotheses were tested and supported (in favor of an antagonistic pattern of interaction in the case of the second hypothesis) on a representative sample of adult Poles (N = 853).

This publication refers to the J. Bowlby’s attachment theory. This theory says that in human there is a biologically conditioned tendency to search and create proximity to significant persons. Followers of Bowlby – C. Hazan i P. Shaver considered romantic relation as an attachment relation. They have found that both in child-parent and romantic relation the same biological system is responsible for emotional and behavioral evolution of relation. The base of attachment is emotional and psychical proximity. In this work it is emphasized how important for creation of attachment in romantic relation first sexual contacts are. It is also underlined that breaking romantic or child-mother relation may provoke serious traumatism. The author of the publication claims that among factors influencing proximity in sexual relation are: emotional proximity, sex (stronger impact in case of women), earlier effort to abstain from this relation (eg. religiously motivated), whether the partner is or is not the first one (stronger impact in case of the first sexual partner).

Subjective well-being constitutes and important area for positive psychology research. Building own feeling of happiness and satisfaction strongly depends on relations with other people. The aim of this thesis in the analysis of the relations between well-being and family relations or partnership relations of students. The results obtained showed that the retrospective positive evaluation of a relation between parents in the childhood period and own relations with the father were connected to the higher indicators of personal well-being. What has been obtained is also statistically important relation between secure attachment style and higher personal well-being as well as between the styles: evasion and anxiety-ambivalent and lower personal well-being. The prediction analysis proved that both non-secure styles decrease the well-being indicators, however, it did not prove that the secure style is the condition of well-being. With regards to intimate relations, the obtained results point that the form itself of the relations which is formed does not relate to the feeling of happinessbutits quality definitely does. The obtained data also show that the people being in the relationships are more satisfied with life that singles.

The literature on the subject suggests that attachment is a key mechanism in human development. The model of attachment develops in early childhood and influences the way of establishing close relationships in subsequent phases of life as well as the development of various mental disorders (Berlin, Cassidy 1999; Bowlby 2007/1969). The aim of the paper is to determine the relations between attachment styles and the experience of love in groups of prisoners and non-prisoners. Two studies were conducted: a study of prison inmates (n = 314) and a study of subjects from the general population (n = 259). Attachment style was examined by means of the Attachment Styles Questionnaire by M. Plopa (2008), and the experience of love was analyzed based on the narrative analysis technique. We computed multiple regression to show how particular dimensions of attachment best determine the ways of experiencing love. The main attachment style explaining the experience of love turned out to be a secure style.

Przeprowadzono dwa badania: pierwsze to badanie więźniów (n = 314), a drugie – osób z populacji generalnej (n = 259). Do badania stylu przywiązania zastosowano Kwestionariusz Stylów Przywiązaniowych M. Plopy (2008), natomiast analizę doświadczania miłości przeprowadzono w oparciu o technikę analizy narracji.

The aim of the study was to present the relationship between attachment styles and the dimensions of identity development. The theoretical framework of current research constitutes: Attachment Theory by Bowlby (2007) as well as his followers (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991), and a concept of Identity Development in the Identity Status Paradigm (Brzezińska & Piotrowski, 2010), which is based on the Psychosocial Development Theory by Erikson (1997). The participants were 109 students from different universities and classes. The experiment was questionnairebased – the participants filled out the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale and the Relationship Questionnaire. The results suggested a relationship between anxious-avoidant and preoccupied attachment styles and specific dimensions of identity development.

The present study verifies in the Polish cultural context results of previously conducted studies in links between the attachment quality and the quality of parental care. Measures of insecure childhood attachment styles to both parents, secure and insecure adolescent attachment styles, along with measures of parental attitudes of both parents were completed by a sample of 85 secondary school students (54 girls and 31 boys). Insecure (avoidant and anxious / ambivalent) childhood attachment styles to mother correlated positively with rejecting and demanding maternal attitudes and negatively with loving, protecting and casual attitude. The same kind of links was observed: a) between insecure childhood attachment styles to father and paternal attitudes; b) between insecure adolescent attachment styles and parental attitudes of both parents. Secure adolescent attachment style correlated positively with loving, protecting and casual parental attitudes of both parents and negatively with rejecting and demanding attitudes. These results support the results obtained in studies conducted mainly in the Anglo-Saxon cultural context where similar links between attachment quality and quality of parental care were found.

The article analyzes the significanceof attachment relations for the ability to enter into close relations in the human life cycle. The secure attachment style which develops on the basis of the primordial relation between mother (or a guardian) and the child in the firststages of life is the cornerstone of future intimate relations and a resource which facilitates successful dealing with developmental tasks in interpersonal dependency relations. During the childhood, it contributes to the development of the relation of trust and dependence, during the adolescence to the growth of new extra-family relations and in adulthood to the co-creation with the partner of an intimate love relationship.

Analizy statystyczne wykazały dodatni związek stylu lękowo-ambiwalentnego z symptomami somatycznymi, niepokojem, symptomami depresji oraz stylu unikowego z niepokojem i symptomami depresji. Bezpieczny styl przywiązania okazał się ujemnie skorelowany z symptomami depresji.

Prezentowany artykuł porusza zagadnienie bliskich związków interpersonalnych w kontekście współczesnej kultury, wyodrębniając z niej dwa charakterystyczne zjawiska istotne dla relacji międzyludzkich: przywiązanie i osamotnienie. Szeroko przytaczane badania dowodzą, iż bezpieczne style przywiązania ukształtowane w dzieciństwie stanowią podstawowy czynnik warunkujący stabilne i satysfakcjonujące relacje, natomiast style unikający i lękowo-ambiwalentny destabilizują funkcjonowanie związków oraz w konsekwencji doprowadzają do niezadowolenia i osamotnienia partnerów. Najpoważniejszym efektem oddziaływania pozabezpiecznych stylów przywiązania i rosnącego poczucia osamotnienia jest pokoleniowy przekaz wzorców warunkujący nową jakość relacji i więzi międzyludzkich, w których naczelną wartość przyjmuje kultura indywidualizmu oraz nieustanne, nie zawsze satysfakcjonujące wybory.

The article presents the problem of close relationships in the context of contemporary culture, extracting from it two characteristic phenomena relevant to human relationships: attachment and loneliness. Two theories are basic for the article: the Bowlby’s theory of attachment and Hazan and Shaver theory of three attachment styles in romantic relationships: secure, anxiety-ambivalent and avoidant. Loneliness is considered on two dimensions: social and emotional, but the emotional aspect of loneliness is a key phenomenon in unsecure attachment styles. A widely cited study shows that secure attachment styles shaped in childhood are a key determinant of stable and satisfying relationships, while avoiding and anxiety-ambivalent styles destabilize the couples functioning and, consequently, lead to dissatisfaction and loneliness of partners. The most serious impact of unsecure attachment styles and a growing sense of loneliness is generational pattern transmission, which creates the new quality of bonds and relationships. This new quality is the culture of individualism and choices that are constant and not always rewarding.

Today, over 1/3 of all marriages entered into each year end in divorce. Children struggle with a whole spectrum of negative influences as a result. The purpose of this study was to investigate the negative aspects of divorce and its effect on the functioning of children of divorced parents in their adult lives. The study considered the effects of divorce on intimate relationships; particular attention is paid to the influence of parental divorce on the communication and attachment styles of the intimate relationships of adults whose parents are divorced. Having studied the cases of 101 people (50 people from an active research group and 51 from a control group) using the “Marital and Partner Communication Questionnaire” and the “Attachment Styles Questionnaire”, one can conclude that people from the active research group more often perform actions that devalue their partners. They are less likely to show commitment and support in relationships in comparison to the control group. Furthermore, adult children of divorce score higher results on the scale of avoidant and anxious-resistant attachment styles than the control group.

Dodatkowo dorosłe dzieci rozwiedzionych rodziców częściej niż osoby pochodzące z rodzin niedotkniętych rozwodem charakteryzował unikowy i lękowo-ambiwalentny styl przywiązania.

This article seeks to examine the relationship between attachment styles in childhood and the development of eating disorders later in life. The assumption underlying the article is, the development of the social structure places considerable emphasis on eating as a way of socialization and a comfortable experience. A review of the research literature on the field documents a positive relationship between eating disorders, health problems and difficulties in family and interpersonal relationships.1 Therefore, it can be said that the assumption that the relationship between the attachment style of parents and children and eating is justified, since personal coping habits, especially attachment styles, are expressed to a certain extent in the specific eating behavior of the individual.

The paper presents the analysis of life attitudes/attachment styles among secondary school teenagers, in terms of selected personal factors that determine their development. The authors draw on the fundamental assumptions of E. Berne’s theory of transactional analysis as well as on the model of attachment styles, created by K. Bartholomew and L.M. Horowitz, describing the individual’s attitudes towards self and others, and emphasizing the fact that the attitudes are determined by such personal factors as the level of stress experienced by an individual, aggressiveness, emotional intelligence and hope of success. The research data indicate that secondary school teenagers tend to have positive views of self; however, they exhibit negative attitudes towards others. This points to a dismissive-avoidant model of attachment (I am OK, You are not OK), characterized by a drive for self-reliance and a tendency to avoid emotional intimacy in interpersonal relations. The study revealed that the most significant correlates of life attitudes (having taken into consideration the strength of the correlation) included such factors as hope of success, experiencing stress, emotional intelligence, and aggressiveness. A strong correlation was discovered between the aforementioned variables and attitudes towards self, which were found to be determined primarily by hope of success (willpower and the ability to find solutions); experiencing stress, predominantly intrapsychic stress and, to a lesser extent, external stress; and emotional intelligence (in particular, the ability to use emotions in the process of thinking and acting). No significant correlations were detected between attitudes towards self and aggressive behaviour and its dimensions (except a weak correlation with emotional sensitivity). It was revealed that attitudes towards other people were primarily predicted by such factors as aggressive behaviour and all its dimensions; external stress; and emotional intelligence (particularly the ability to recognize emotions). A weak, albeit significant, correlation was observed between attitudes towards others and hope of success (in particular, willpower).

Wyniki badań wykazały istnienie związków pomiędzy stylami przywiązania lękowo-unikającym i zaabsorbowanym a specyficznymi wymiarami rozwoju tożsamości.
