The fact that the symbol of fish, used by the first Christians as their identification sign, has been successfully transferred into the 21st century is a phenomenon itself. The earlier secret sign known only to a handful of people is nowadays commonly present in the public sphere, due to ‘fishes’ stuck on the back of cars. It is not surprising that in the era of the Internet the idea appeared to transfer this symbol also into the virtual world. The emoticon < > < has been used to this aim and thus it acquired, apart from the denotative meaning, the connotative one as well. The aim of this article was to answer the question, to which extent the transfer of the fish symbol in form of an emoticon into the Internet communication has been successful and thus if the emoticon < > < is recognisable as the symbol of Christianity at least to an extent comparable to the recognisability of the fish symbol on cars.
