Beatus qui erat antequam nasceretur bei Laktanz, Divinae Institutiones IV, 8, 1-3 wurde als Zitat von Jeremia angeführt. Das Zitat als solche war im 2. Jahnundert bekannt und wahrscheinlich in irgendeiner Sammlung biblischer behilflicher Fragmente im Unterricht aufbewahrt. So kannten es sowohl Gnostiker wie auch Irenäus von Lyon. Das Zitat wurde im Thomas Evangelium und Philippus Evangelium aus der Bibliothek von Nag Hammadi bezeugt. In der Demonstratio von Irenäus und in Divine Institutiones diente zum Hinweis auf die Präexistenz des Gottes Sohnes, in den gnostischen Texten deutete auch auf die göttlicher Herkunft der Gnostiker.
