There are several ways to trace the development of science – to analyze the theory and methods, institutions and publications as an expression of scientific work, and last but not least - the scientists. Article tries to describe representatives of modern Polish book science. As a source of data Supplement IV of Dictionary of Polish Book Specialists [Słownik pracowników książki polskiej. Suplement IV], published in 2016, was selected. Biographies were analyzed for common characteristics, such as education, employment, participation in associations. Starting date of analysis was 1945, giving a total of 263 records. The study used quantitative analysis and a method of social network analysis (SNA).

Professor Janusz Dunin-Horkawicz (b. 26 June 1931 in Vilna, d. 27 July 2007 in Łódź) was a humanist, university lecturer and social activist. His scholarly interests encompassed the theory and practice of social communication by means of the written word and iconic images; the history of literary, children’s and popular books; librarianship and bibliophilism. In his reflection on the world of printed matter, Dunin used several parallel discourses: bibliological, bibliophilic and media studiesdiscourse. In order to describe Dunin’s achievements, we would have to abandon the entire encyclopaedia- and dictionary-based conceptual framework we use to describe scholars. Descriptions like eminent literature scholar, popular culture scholar, media studies expert, bibliologist, bibliophile are applicable to some extent, but they do not describe all of Professor Dunin’s competencies, limiting the discussion about his role in the humanities today. As a scholar Dunin followed his own path in pursuit of learning; he had a unique gift for observing the world of books and literature, and his vast knowledge enabled him to move effortlessly across various research fields. Consequently, his conclusions were cross-disciplinary and were expressed in a light style combining scientific approach with popular appeal. According to the author of this article, Professor Dunin’s legacy deserves to be analysed in detail by contemporary scholars.

Leon Bykowski (1895–1992) was a Ukrainian bibliologist who in the interwar period found himself in Poland as a refugee from Ukraine occupied by the Bolsheviks. In the years 1928–1944 he worked at the Municipal Public Library of Warsaw, where he was responsible for completing the collections. During the German occupation, Bykowski was the director of this library. At that time, he was a lecturer at the Higher Courses in Library Studies andan he was also author of numerous scientific publications in the field of bibliology. The aim of the article is to present Bykowski’s role in the development of Polish librarianship science and to show his contribution to saving library collections during World War II. The article is written mostly the basis of Bykowski’s memoirs published after World War II in West Germany, Great Britain and the USA.

The aim of the article is to examine the origins, directions of development, methodological assumptions and research categories in Belarusian bibliology as an autonomous academic discipline. An analysis of the most important achievements of books studies in Belarus, the beginnings of which as a science go back to the turn of the nineteenth century, has enabled the author to formulate a number of research hypotheses. Of key importance to the development of Belarusian bibliology were historical studies — they laid the foundations for the modern book science theory, as it was only thanks to research into book history that it became possible to formulate the theory of books studies, the role and place of the book in scholarship, research methods and conceptual apparatus of the discipline. An important role in the development of the methodology of bibliological research in the second half of the twentieth century was played by the studies of the Polish scholar Krzysztof Migoń. A considerable role was also played by the methods developed for the needs of bibliography and library science. The origins and evolution of bibliology in Belarus were and are inextricably linked to the role of the book as a means of disseminating and recording the achievements of the human thought, to the traditions of society’s intellectual development, cultural identity of the Belarusian people as well as the general knowledge of book culture. Belarusian bibliology has some significant achievements to its credit, both in historical studies and in book theory and methodology of book studies. As a result, it is possible to speak of the Belarusian book studies school, which is characterised by: 1) the use of interdisciplinary research methodology as well as scholarly interaction with disciplines like philosophy, culture studies, bibliography studies and information studies; 2) development of axiological and phenomenological research; and 3) development of international collaboration in order to make the Belarusian book studies recognisable in international academia. A considerable role was and still is played by bibliological journals, which are a platform for presenting scholarly achievements in the discipline (they include Кнігазнаўчыя чытанні, Кірыла-Мяфодзіеўскія чытанні, Берковские чтения) as well as publication series devoted to the subject.
Professor Jerzy Starnawski (1922–2012) was a historian of literature, bibliographer and author of over one-thousand works published in 1948–2013. The article examines those of Starnawski’s writings that stemmed from his ceaseless interest in books, his constant contact with them and his studies of them during countless houres spent in libraries, even during brief visits to various towns. Starnawski was passionate about finding, documenting, describing and editing, especially previously unknown works, though he also studied remnants of works by Polish authors and information about Poland that disseminated outside the country. On the other hand, Starnawski’s teaching experiences led to the publication of comprehensive works introducing Polish language and literature scholars (and not only them) to bibliography and providing an overview of works dealing with the history of literature. Bibliography and history of book studies were subjects to which he devoted not only a separate publication but also a number of treatises and articles. In addition, he initiated and, to a large extent, edited 10 volumes of the Słownik badaczy literatury polskiej (Dictionary of Polish literature scholars), which is largely a biographical dictionary of book scholars.
Artykuł omawia problemy i możliwości współczesnej edycji naukowej.

The article discusses the problems and possibilities of the contemporary academic edition. Editorial preparations of texts by late authors throughout the 20th century underwent more and more rigid normalisation. Discussions in Poland mainly referred to specific solutions, though they rather seldom raised the issues of text theory and criticism, broadly developed and examined both in Western and in Russian literary studies. In effect of the stiffening rules, the crucial pieces of information about the text failed to be included within an edition, and it almost completely neglected the text-forming issues. The knowledge about the transformations of a given work may extend its interpretive potential. Solution to the problems addressed within the framework of text criticism, against its initial assumptions, will not be worked out on the ground of text criticism unless concepts of digitisation designed to individual works separately are developed.
Artykuł zawiera informacje na temat metodyki opracowania bibliografii specjalnych i terytorialnych oraz omówienie i merytoryczną charakterystykę piśmiennictwa rejestrowanego w dotychczas opracowanych bibliografiach polskich i niemieckich poświęconych tematyce pomorskiej ludności rodzimej.

The article contains the information regarding the methodology of creating special and territorial bibliographies as well as an overview and a constructive specification of the literature recorded in the currently researched Polish and German bibliographies devoted to the native Pomeranian populace.
The main trends in the contemporary bibliographic studies on the history of Belarusian book are considered. The problems and new methodological approaches are identified, in the context of the book culture paradigm. Special attention is paid to research publications and conference proceedings concerning the 500th anniversiry of Belarusian printing.
The most serious losses in Polish written heritage occurred during the Polish- -Swedish wars in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. During each of the three war campaigns the Swedes plundered and took out to Sweden the Polish church (monastery, cathedral or capitular) libraries as well as secular ones, including book collections belonging to Polish kings (Sigismund II Augustus and Sigismund III Vasa). Owing to the Polish endeavors, the 1660 Peace of Oliwa contained a clause that ensured the return of the seized Polish cultural assets but it was not implemented in practice. Consequently, the Polish scholars faced the task of seeking and registering the Polish possessions kept in Swedish book collections. The measures undertaken in this area in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries showed the wealth, diversity and value of the books belonging to Polish written heritage but they covered only a part of it. It is therefore necessary to continue research of this kind, which will enable more thorough knowledge of different aspects of the history of book culture in Poland. They will be also a significant source for historical-bibliological, literature-science, science of science, and similar studies.

Studia te będą też istotnym wkładem do rozważań historyczno-bibliologicznych, literaturoznawczych, naukoznawczych, muzykologicznych i innych.
The article results from a critical lecture of the book, written by the art historian and bibliologist Arkadiusz Wagner from Toruń 2016. This is the first in Polish academic literature complete monography of supralibros within the Polish Crown and the Great Duchy of Lithuania, since medieval ages up to the mid of 17th century. Wagner describes Pollish history of «the noblest of all bookplates» within a context of bibliophile culture and art in Poland and Europe. Author of the review refers critically to the structure and geographical scope of the text (omission of the Pomerania and Silesia), to the definition of „supralibros” or other terms used by A. Wagner. However, she concluded that her remarks do not detract value of the book, which seems to stay valid in next decades and become a fundament of further researches.
The identifi cation of old book collections is one of more important areas of historical-bibliological research. A signifi cant portion of such collections are parish libraries (book collections). One of the principal sources in their investigation is visitation records listing the books possessed by a parish. Such documents of general visitations of the 18th and early 19th centuries in the Chełm diocese’s Chełm deanery show the parish book collections in Czułczyce, Kumów, Olchowiec, Orchówek, Pawłów, Sawin, Sosnowica, Świerże, Uhrusk, and Wereszczyn. They are diversifi ed both in terms of the number and content of books. In each of them there are books pro officio ecclesiastico, while the texts pro docendo populo are found in larger and better endowed parishes. The books were usually donated therefore the collections contain works not necessarily useful in the pastoral work of parish priests. They are the products of Polish and foreign print shops and date from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Rozpoznanie dawnych księgozbiorów to jeden z istotniejszych obszarów badań historycznobibliologicznych. Znaczącą część tego rodzaju kolekcji stanowią biblioteki parafialne. Do podstawowych źródeł w badaniach nad nimi należą akta wizytacyjne, rejestrujące książki będące na stanie parafii. Tego rodzaju dokumentacja wizytacji generalnych z XVIII i początku XIX w. w diecezji chełmskiej, dekanacie chełmskim, pokazuje księgozbiory parafialne w Czułczycach, Kumowie, Olchowcu, Orchówku, Pawłowie, Sawinie, Sosnowicy, Świerżem, Uhrusku i Wereszczynie. W każdej z nich są obecne książki pro offi cio ecclesiastico, natomiast teksty pro docendo populo występują w parafi ach większych i lepiej uposażonych. Pochodzą one zazwyczaj z darów, stąd też znajdują się wśród nich dzieła niekoniecznie przydatne do pracy duszpasterskiej proboszczów. Są wytworami polskich i zagranicznych warsztatów drukarskich i pochodzą z XVI, XVII i XVIII w.
