Henryk Markiewicz, one of the greatest Polish humanists of the 20th and 21st centuries, died on 31 October 2013 in Kraków. His huge legacy includes writings dealing with bibliological themes, concerning the history of literature, literary life, perception of literary works, and their formal, in-cluding material, aspect, i.e. books themselves. In addition, there are several theoretical and practical articles dealing with editing and relating to various editorial projects encompassing fiction, criticism and historiography, as well as theory of literature. Markiewicz is also the author of humorous works published in the form of occasional bibliophilic prints. Henryk Markiewicz amassed a huge book collection, which he used in his work but which was also a source of constant pleasure for him. He compiled it passionately, systematically and painstak-ingly. As a result, he built up a humanistic collection of forty-five thousand books, which, along-side an almost complete set of works dealing with Polish studies, contained foreign publications as well as selected publications devoted to related disciplines. This collection as well as the scholar’s substantial archive was bought already during his lifetime by the Pomeranian Library in Szczecin.

Collecting art and supporting book culture was a phenomenon widely occurring among the Czech major figures acting in the economic and political life in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1939. One of them, General Director of the Živnostenská banka, JUDr. Jaroslav Preiss, collected art and books as well, but his relationship to his collections, mainly to his library, was a special one, as have already discovered his contemporaries. He collected books with deep knowledge and mastery. His library provided a unique, large and precious collection of the literature and history of the Czech lands reaching from the 16th to the 19th century. This study aims to present Preiss’s activities concerning writing and editing own books, supporting Czech book culture, purchasing books and expanding his collection. Attention is also paid to his friendship and acquaintance with some of the main representants of the Czechoslovak book culture.

The sketch presents an interpretation of the memories by Stanisław Wasylewski, describing his work as a volunteer, scholarship holder, and then assistant to the National Ossolinski Institute in Lviv in 1905−1910. On canvas of those memories, a question was posed about how the mission of the library established for the protection of Polish cultural heritage of the time of annexation influenced the perception and experience of its employee. The reconstruction of Wasylewski’s ‘ossolian biography’ helped to discover the categories of the writer’s thinking about the library as a university, which is created by a community of scholars and learners, in which the most important currents of national culture cross, and thus the task of forming a man respecting cultural heritage is fulfilled.

This paper focuses on the collection of Czech sacred songs written probably by Tobiáš Vokoun during the exile after the Battle of White Mountain and first published in 1627. The first part outlines the historical and cultural context of this early modern print. Main characteristics concerning the content and the form of the songs are given. In 1929, the collection of sacred songs was published as a bibliophily. Accordingly, the second part concentrates on how the modern edition was prepared for publication. Czech writer and translator František Táborský (1858–1940) was in charge of the content, Jaroslav Preiss (1870–1946), General Director of the Živnostenská banka, provided the early modern print, which he owned in his private library, and financed the edition. The bibliophily of 1929 is one example of numerous activities how the banker supported Czech book culture.

The article results from a critical lecture of the book, written by the art historian and bibliologist Arkadiusz Wagner from Toruń 2016. This is the first in Polish academic literature complete monography of supralibros within the Polish Crown and the Great Duchy of Lithuania, since medieval ages up to the mid of 17th century. Wagner describes Pollish history of «the noblest of all bookplates» within a context of bibliophile culture and art in Poland and Europe. Author of the review refers critically to the structure and geographical scope of the text (omission of the Pomerania and Silesia), to the definition of „supralibros” or other terms used by A. Wagner. However, she concluded that her remarks do not detract value of the book, which seems to stay valid in next decades and become a fundament of further researches.

Jan Smetanski (1881-1959), a Lviv natural historian and a high school teacher, was an avid bibliophile. He assembled a rich collection of 40,000 volumes, which was removed from Lviv after the war and located first in Przemysl and then in Katowice. After the owner died, the collection was dispersed. Some of the books were purchased by the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, a part by the Silesian Library in Katowice, a fragment of the collection remained in the possession of the family. The article discusses a fragment of Jan Smetanski’s collection kept in the collections of the Silesian Library.

Cel: Wydawnictwa bibliofilskie cechują się nieprzeciętnymi walorami estetycznymi. W powstawaniu współczesnych polskich edycji bibliofilskich znaczący jest udział Włodzimierza Rudnickiego. Choć druki bibliofilskie podlegają przepisom o egzemplarzu obowiązkowym, to są słabo obecne w zbiorach bibliotecznych. Metoda: Przy użyciu metod analityczno-opisowej i historyczno-artystycznej ukazano dorobek projektancki W. Rudnickiego. Materiał statystyczny zebrano w drodze przeszukiwania baz katalogowych; następnie poddano go analizie.

Aim: Bibliophile publications are characterized by extraordinary aesthetic values. Włodzimierz Rudnicki's contribution to the creation of contemporary Polish bibliophile editions is significant. Although bibliophilic prints are subject to compulsory copy regulations, they are scarcely present in library collections. Research method: Using the analytical, descriptive and historical-artistic methods, Rudnicki's design output was shown. Statistical material was collected by searching catalogue databases; then it was analyzed. Results/Conclusions: Library resources are incomplete as far as the bibliophile publishing segment is concerned, which not only limits access to them, but it also constitutes a damage to archival material, preserved for future generations. To counteract this phenomenon, librarians must take other steps that go beyond the current legal system.
