The article is devoted to biographical writing, which by the methodologies of the 20th century was thrown out of the field of humanities research. It returns in the new century with cultural anthropology, gender studies and – above all – memory studies. However, it raises a lot of questions, including doubts about the representation (author of the biography) and witnesses of events. The author of the article compares the work of a biographer with the work of an archaeologist who verifies the sources and reconstructs the whole on the basis of the background and contexts of time and place. In the biographer’s work, however, he notices one more element: research subjectivity, which in a world filled with nostalgia, we are not able to negate or eliminate.

The article presents a model of personalist biography that stands in opposition to the postmodernist one. The personalist biography model refers in terms of anthropology to Viktor E. Frankl, the founder of logotherapy (‘Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy’) and the key thinkers of the personalist movement: Karol Wojtyła, Mieczysław Krąpiec, Józef Tischner and Czesław S. Bartnik. Stressing the subjective aspect of biography, the personalist model allows for capturing the personal character of the created biographical portrait of a given person while also taking into account the postulates formed by the critics of biographical writing in its traditional and later structuralist forms, especially the postulates related to the requirement of biographer’s objectivity and neutrality. The personalist biography model also takes into consideration the insights of the French theorists on the inevitable involvement of the researcher in the reconstructed picture of a life and the considerations on the character of representation (by F. Ankersmit and M. P. Markowski).

Autor artykułu podejmuje problematykę materialności w książce Ślady nieobecności. Poszukiwanie Ireny Szelburg autorstwa Anny Marchewki.

The article concerns problems of materiality in Ślady nieobecności. Poszukiwanie Ireny Szelburg [Traces of Absence. In Search for Irena Szelburg] by Anna Marchewka. The author of the article reveals originality of Marchewka’s biographical practice interpreting records of material experience, spatial experience and photographic ekphrasis. The main feature of this new mode of biographical writing is the stress on physical, somatic aspect of biographer’s experience, which indicates different kind of epistemology – embodied, engaging body as much as mind and emotions.

The article presents the sources of inspiration, assumptions and implementation of a long-term (2009–2018) project devoted to the biography of Professor Józef Kostrzewski, a leading 20th-century Polish prehistorian. This project was implemented by the author of the article as an employee of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań, and later, following retirement, as a worker in the Poznań Branch of the Archives of the Polish Academy of Sciences. As a result of an extensive archival and bibliographic query, a number of new facts about the life and work of the Professor were unearthed, especially regarding his activities outside the academic field of interest (including a number of social, patriotic and religious initiatives, often carried out within the underground movement, since Poland existed only as a partitioned land). The results obtained will be soon presented in a monograph entitled Żywot długi, pracowity i spełniony. Profesor Józef Kostrzewski (1885–1969) – prehistoryk, patriota, Europejczyk, which is underway since 2014 in co-authorship with Dr. Jarmila Elżbieta Kaczmarek.
