The article analyzes the compact publications and texts from Polish periodicals about one of the most popular Polish writers of the interwar period – Stanisław Wasylewski (1885–1953). In 2015, 130 years have passed since death of the creator, and the state of research on his life and work is still in considerable dispersion, and some selected issues are only partially studied, hence there is a need to gather and discuss so far published materials. The text discusses the few publications devoted to the writer in compact and press releases from years 1945–2015. The analysis shows that the profile of the writer, whose works are still being published, at the moment again is being ignored by the next generation of researchers. The largest number of articles devoted to this author was published just after the war and, above all, they were mostly the reports connected to the loud across the country process of collaboration. After the acquittal of Stanisław Wasylewski of charges and his exclusion from the Union of Writers, for a long time he became forgotten, until late fifties, when re-editions of his works, and publication of new titles that he left were issued. Later, mainly thanks to the initiative of Jerzy Pośpiech, several articles devoted to Stanisław Wasylewski were issued in the nineties and after 2000, but it is still not enough material for those interested in the life and work of one of the most acclaimed and widely read authors of the interwar period.

Intelligentsia biographies in Belarus. A case studyDrawing on a case study from the body of empirical research which includes 30 narrative interviews conducted using Fritz Schuetze’s biographical method with male and female residents of Belarus, the author explores the process of Belarusian identity formation of a Belarusian-speaking dissenting intellectual. The case study is drawn from the author’s research into the ways in which Belarusian-speaking intellectuals (the group locating itself in opposition to the establishment by the very recourse to the literary Belarusian language of instruction and everyday life as well as other dissenting identity markers) conceptualize and hone their national identity. One can trace the path towards fully-fledged Belarusian identity which unrolls via turning points, thanks to significant others through participation in intelligentsia circles. One of the membership rules in the social world of intelligentsia is the use of the high-profile Belarusian language. The interpretive analysis is set against the backdrop of the socio-linguistic situation in contemporary Belarus with its authoritarian regime, advanced Russification, contested memory field, restrained memory work and conflicting historical and national discourses.

The term herstory was created as a result of playing with words. The English word history began to be read as his story. To emphasize the separateness of women’s history, the term herstory appeared as a female equivalent. A linguistic, feminist joke has coincided with the change of the paradigm of historical sciences, in which – apart from analyzing politics – social and human issues have arisen in time. The history of women was just in the new paradigm, so the term herstory quickly became popular. Nowadays, it also refers to stories about women, as well as to feminine narratives. These include biographies and mini-biographies for young readers. The characters of these books are women left out of history, as well as women who live in present times and deserve attention. They represent various professions which until recently were unavailable for the ladies. They are creative, aware of their needs, decisive and consistent in their actions. They can certainly be role models for modern girls. They are the ones who were not there before.

The author presents three excerpts from the reports of cycling travel in Poland in the years 2008–2011, contained in the “Bicycle Journals”. They contain descriptions of meetings with Poles who, as a result of political change in the areas of eastern Poland after 1945, were forcibly resettled in central, or north-western and western parts of Poland within its current borders. The direct accounts of the participants of the events show the complicated political background of Poland, Europe and the world after the Second World War, as well as the dramatic fate of the individuals.

In recent years, the experience of precarious employment and uncertain employment conditions has become the subject of an increasing amount of sociological studies, both in Poland and worldwide. The research places a particularly strong emphasis on young people who, more than other social categories, tend to be excluded from stable segments of the labour market. However, the conclusions drawn from the analyses are ambivalent – on the one hand, we observe a process of normalisation of precariousness which may create framework conditions for the emergence of some expected professional career models; on the other hand, we also notice the process of contestation demonstrated by the precariat, the ‘classin-the-making’. In this article we discuss the problems of precarious work by analysing a range of life strategies of young Poles. The empirical basis for the study was provided by the Beethoven PREWORK project funded by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN) and its qualitative part which consisted of biographical narrative interviews with groups of individuals aged 30 or younger, employed on fixedterm contracts, working as unpaid interns or temporarily outside the labour market, from the three large cities and four small towns of Lower Silesia, Mazovia and Łódzkie regions. In this article we present a preliminary typology of life strategies reconstructed in the course of the analysis of the collected data. In each of the four distinguished types we can notice a tension between the normalisation and the contestation of precarity, which adds dynamism to the career choices made by the individuals and – at least in some of the cases – may contribute to the development of diverse forms of resistance to precarious employment.

The Canadian-Polish Research Institute was founded in 1956 by Wiktor Turek, who was also its first president. The following presidents of the Institute were: Tadeusz Krychowski (1963-1972), Rudolf K. Kogler (1972-1995), Edward Sołtys (1995-2011), and Joanna Lustański (from 2011). During the sixty years of its existence, the Institute published about 50 books. There are several dominant thematic profiles among them: 1. bibliographic books (Polonica Canadiana, The Polish Language Press in Canada); 2. registers of Polish scientists and a list of Polish artists, writers and musicians; 3. memories; 4. monographs on the history of Polish settlement in Canada, as well as Polish institutions and organizations; 5. other publications: an English translation of Melchior Wańkowicz's Three Generations, a volume of poetry and prose by Danuta Bieńkowska – Beetwen the Shores, a monograph on the sciences of law by prof. Tadeusz Grygier Sprawiedliwość, czyli istota moralności, zdrowia i prawa, and the book of Edward Sołtys Black Ribbon Day. The publishing achievements of the Canadian-Polish Research Institute are of paramount importance for promoting the contribution of Poles living in Canada. This participation includes the activity of Polish engineers, scientists, artists, clerics, veterans, social and political activists. Their presentation in the form of studies issued by the Institute is an important element of the Polish public and historical diplomacy.

Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-391X. e-ISSN 2658-283X. DOI: https://doi.org/10.14746/ikps.2019.27.07Biographies of people with disabilities emphasising on their humanity and the value of this very special human experience may lead to questioning common assumptions about disability and people suffering from it. One of the best known historical figures among the people with disabilities was Hellen Keller, a deaf-blind American writer, educator and social activist. The article contains an attempt to challenge the myth of Keller as a “miracle child” by presenting her rich life and the most prominent aspects of her social and political activity.

Artykuł przytacza mało dotąd znane szczegóły z życia rodzinnego i zawodowego Mardkowicza jako notariusza, dotyczące m.in.

In Polish historiography, activities of promotors of tourism development in the city of Konin never attracted attention from regional historians or physical culture historians. More recently, however, there is a growing interest in this subject, e.g. a popular study discussing the 100-year tourist traditions in Konin has just been published. What is still missing are biographical studies of major promotors of tourism in Konin, and their particular contributions to the development of tourism in the interwar period and after World War II. The study presents short biographies of leading tourism activists from the industrial city of Konin, who were associated with various forms of tourism. The materials used in the study come from primary sources stored in the Konin National Archives, from magazine articles, memoirs, and various reports. The author included information from private collections or private chronicles, including personal correspondence and press clippings, in particular, materials written and collected by Andrzej Józef Miller.

Z powodu urodzenia, należał on do ścisłej elity ziemiaństwa.

This article reports a qualitative research project focused on examining the professional biographies of four post-service Polish teachers of foreign languages. The main objective was to find out what experiences in their professional biographies the participants perceived as the most critical, and to see if those memories were roughly similar in the participants’ accounts. Following Karol Wojtyła’s (1994) anthropological views connected with a person’s structure and their dynamism, the study discusses the subjects’ experiences relating to teacher reactivity, emotivity and agency against the socio-political background of Poland in the period before and after political transformation.

In his writings, Éric Baratay advances that the chronicles of people should be supplemented with animal histories as he stands by the side of non-human animals and supports attempts to free history from its solely anthropocentric perspective. Animals are not capable of speaking any human language, they cannot record their experiences in writing / words, which makes them unable to create the great animal history. However, they have human friends. Therefore, the indirect approach, meeting to the goal intended by Baratay halfway, may rely on the stories about animals, their biographies written in the personal notes. The article presents the stories of pigs recorded in the autobiographies and memoirs of Antonina Żabińska, Dorota Sumińska, and Sy Montgomery, which are contributions to the history of animals.
PL
W artykule zapisane we wspomnieniach Antoniny Żabińskiej, Doroty Sumińskiej i Sy Montgomery historie świnek, tworzące przyczynek do historii zwierząt.
