The idea of family in the western culture has evolved throughout the centuries, from a strong-tied relationship between man-woman-children to the most varied combinations of person-to-person bonds. In many Western societies, the parents’ sexual orientation no longer defines the family structure. This paper studies identity and family relations by means of semiotics and conceptual metaphor theory.

The paper applies an interdisciplinary perspective to a fictional text showing that fractals as mathematical models are a powerful tool for conceptualizing life experience in biographical narratives. The multilevel construction of Chatterton by Peter Ackroyd is explored on the basis of fractal metaphor theory. This research focuses on the LIFE IS A STORY conceptual fractal metaphor which is built up on analogical mappings, mental space connections, and blends. The fractal model of metaphor in biographical narrative, which is assigned to the formula LIFE IS A STORY f (1) + f (2) + f (3) + … + f (n), contains the mental space of the intentional source domain story, which provides a way to structure the understanding of the limiting target domain of the concept life. Fractal metaphors aim at making the conceptual metaphor flexible and dynamic, renewing its ability of self-development and self-perfection, transforming itself into one of the means of changeable conceptualization of reality.

Computer game players often express the need to convert the existing English expression occurring in the game to their native language system. The aim of this article is to explore the way the original English nouns are converted to Czech grammatical system. In the theoretical part, the position of English language in the world, the philosophy of the grammatical-lexical adaptation in general and the game itself are suggested. Furthermore, the principle of the existing computer game slang of the Czech players is introduced. Subsequently, in the research part, the nouns are analysed in regard to their word-forming process, semantic motivation and wider situational context. The analysed nouns are provided with a typical example of their common usage in the game. The research outcomes are verified within the analysis of the research part.

Hráči počítačových her často vyžadují transformaci již existujícího anglického výrazu, jenž se ve hře objevuje, do jejich rodného jazyka. Cílem příspěvku je určit způsob, jakým jsou původní anglická substantiva převáděna do českého gramatického systému. Teoretická část referuje o pozici angličtiny ve světě, pojednává o filozofii gramaticko-lexikální adaptace obecně a rovněž nastiňuje základní principy dané hry. Dále pak popisuje již existující slang českých hráčů počítačových her. V praktické části jsou podstatná jména analyzována z hlediska slovotvorby, sémantické motivace a širšího situačního kontextu. U každého analyzovaného substantiva je uveden typický příklad jeho užití ve hře. Výsledky výzkumu jsou ověřeny v rámci rozboru praktické části příspěvku.

Celem artykułu jest omówienie wyrażenia plandemia jako amalgamatu formalnego i pojęciowego, z wykorzystaniem teorii integracji pojęciowej G. Fauconniera i M. Turnera. Tłem rozważań są inne nowo powstałe jednostki z tzw. koronaleksyki, które odnoszą się do wykreowanej, językowo alternatywnej (wobec wizji przekazu środowisk naukowych, medycznych i władz państwowych) rzeczywistości. Użytkownicy polszczyzny opisują elementy zjawiska pandemii za pomocą nowych konstrukcji słowotwórczych i neosemantyzmów (takich jak: antycovidowiec, covidiota, kaganiec, koronasceptyk, koronaściema, koronabzdura). Ci, którzy nastawieni są sceptycznie (bądź negatywnie) wobec pandemii i związanych z nią obostrzeń, za pomocą neologizmu plandemia wyrażają przekonanie, że wirus SARS-Cov-2 jest (czyimś) środkiem do osiągnięcia celu.

The paper discusses the Polish word plandemia (‘plandemic’) as an instance of a formal and conceptual blend, drawing on the conceptual integration theory as formulated by G. Fauconnier and M. Turner. Other new lexical items constituting a group of the so-called COVID vocabulary serve as a background to our analysis in that they all pertain to the linguistically created alternative model of the COVID-19 reality (competing with the message of the scientific community, of medical professionals, and of state authorities). Polish language users coin new derivatives and neosemanticisms referring to the pandemic reality (e.g., antycovidowiec, covidiota, kaganiec, koronasceptyk, koronaściema, koronabzdura). Those who display either a skeptical or a negative attitude towards the pandemic and the restrictions it has brought, employ the neologism plandemia in order to present their opinion that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is instrumental in realizing somebody’s plan and achieving a specific goal.
