While there is general agreement that we need to increase the quality of education, there is less agreement on the measures to be taken. This paper focuses on the need to build the high-quality teaching profession to respond to the changing role of teachers in the twenty first century. It is argued that changes in the system of education should include a central place for the teacher and the quality of teacher education. The paper looks at selected aspects of teacher education policy in relation to the Bologna process and changes that were implemented at different levels of the system of education in Poland. A specific concern of this paper is policies that contribute to raising teacher education quality in a way which responds to the challenges of teachers preparation, recruitment, work and careers, and especially teachers’ lifelong learning. The implications of the analysis are that teacher education policy development in Poland should focus on futher actions for attracting to the teaching profession the best candidates and for retaining the best teachers in the school system in order to build a high-quality teaching profession. Some measures for achieving these goals are proposed.

Konkurencja wśród absolwentów kierunku informatyka na rynku pracy zdopingowała uczelnie do podnoszenia jakości kształcenia. Również Politechnika Lubelska podjęła w tej dziedzinie odpowiednie kroki. Jako że większość absolwentów kierunku informatyka trafia na lokalny rynek pracy, to podjęto działania mające na celu dostosowanie sylwetki absolwenta do potrzeb praco-dawców. Uczelnia wyszła naprzeciw pracodawcom zapraszając ich do dyskusji nad planem studiów. Pozwoliło to na określenie przedmiotów najbardziej wartościowych według pracodawców. Dodatkowo zorganizowane zostały praktyki i staże. Staże połączone zostały z opracowywaniem pracy dyplomowej. Pracodawcy określili tematy prac oraz wspomagali proces realizacji części praktycznej pracy dyplomowej. Teoretyczna część pracy dyplomowej była tradycyjnie opracowy-wana pod nadzorem pracownika Uczelni. Aby wzmocnić pozycję absolwentów na rynku pracy zorganizowano cykl warsztatów wzmacniających umiejętności społeczne studentów, według pracodawców zaniedbywane podczas cyklu kształcenia. Te oraz inne działania takie jak szkolenia studentów, seminaria ze specjalistami z przemysłu czy spotkania z osobami z zagranicy pozwoliły na znaczne podniesienie atrakcyjności absolwentów na rynku pracy.

Competition among the graduates in computer science on the labour market forced universities to improve teaching quality. Also the Lublin University of Technology take action in this domain. Because of the fact that most of our graduates go on local labour market, the actions to adjust the graduate profile to employments demands were taken. The first step was encouraging local It firms to discuss over the studies plan. Thanks to these discussions the set of subject to teach was set. It contain the most valuable subjects according to the IT firms. Additionally the practices and apprenticeships were organized. During apprenticeships students were preparing the practical part of their diploma work. The topic was usually a part of the real project realized by the firm. It allowed students to gather experience and implement the project. To improve graduates position on labour market the social skills were trained during workshops. These actions and the other ones as: courses lead by experienced industry workers, abroad specialists and workshops allowed for increasing graduates attractiveness on the labour market.
