The article is an attempt to answer the question about the legitimacy of distinctions on the "center" and "periphery" on the Polish book market after 1989. The study of mechanisms of centralization and dispersion due to the rapid development of digital technologies focused on the publishing market and distribution of books. The author characterizes Polish publications in terms of the share of individual types of species and varieties in the market, as well as their popularity provided by the marketing whizzes, and expressed in purchasing and readership. She also analyzes the different ways of distribution and circulation of books, paying particular attention to the peripheral from the point of view of the entire market distribution channels.

This paper deals with attitudes of secondary school pupils towards compulsory book reading at school, being the integral part of the subject Croat language and literature teaching subject, and its possible impact on their book (not-)reading in their leisure time. It is based on the research carried out through five-point Likert-type scale in secondary schools in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), in the second half of 2014. The research was conducted on the convenience, stratified sample consisted of 260 secondary school pupils, attending the final class of grammar (130) and vocational (130) school. The results obtained could give an insight into the book reading culture of secondary school pupils within their leisure related to their experience of compulsory book reading at school. It results that compulsory book reading has still been an uninteresting school task for both the strata of the research sample. Moreover, it results that compulsory book reading at school has a certain influence on book reading decrease in both sample strata’s leisure time. However, some guidelines how to increase the students’ interest in compulsory book reading at (secondary) school as well as in book culture within their leisure time are given in this paper.

The study attempts to reconstruct the life of Knight Jan Labounský of Labouně, his confessional ties that can be observed on his relations with the Unity of Brethren and his intellectual interests that are reflected in preserved prints and manuscripts from his book collection. As such, the study also contributes to the topic of the book culture of the early modern age and to studies of aristocratic libraries.

Valentin Mantskovit was a Polish-born itinerant Protestant printer who worked in Hungary in the sixteenth century. The present study points to the interconnection of cultural activities in the history of book culture between Poland and Slovakia in the sixteenth century. The authors analyse and summarise the typographical works of Valentin Mantskovit and point to the social circumstances leading to the relocations of his press within the Kingdom of Hungary. They present the characteristics of the products of his press, focusing in particular on calendars, including the Cracow calendar that he printed. They correct the previously imprecise chronology of his printing activities in the territory of present-day Slovakia with reference to preserved archival sources.

The paper studies the important aspect of the estate culture of the Russian white clergy - the reading circle, readers’ interests of the clergy representatives. The authors examine the possibilities of different sources (inventories of personal libraries, notes and records on books, compilation manuscripts) for the reconstruction of the clergy’s reading circle. Compiled manuscripts are of special interest as they reflect “the modem literary tastes of the compiler and the reader”. The paper analyses the XIX century manuscript-collection which was owned by a priest of the Vyatka diocese. This collection may be divided conventionally into parts - ecclesiastical and secular. The texts of the ecclesiastical part are connected with the studying of the manuscripts’ owner in the Seminary, and with his practical pastoral activity. The secular part contains poems of the late XVIII - early XIX century Russian poets with different subjects - from sententious to erotic. The literary tastes of the manuscript compiler may be assessed as eclectic. The eclectic was usual for many readers of the age, when a rapid change in literary directions took place.

Distribution of book literature from the invention of the printing press up to the present contains many interesting moments of cultural, social and economic nature. A journey of a book from its creation to its final recipient can be best observed in an interesting triangle a printing office — a bookseller — a library. This study follows the distribution of Czech Protestant literature by observing how the works by a leading member of the Unity of Brethren and its most eminent representative, John Amos Comenius, were spreading in the area of the early modern Kingdom of Hungary in the period ranging roughly from the middle of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century. Research has confirmed a high share of Comenius’ works in private and institutional libraries of that time; this high share was ensured by activities of local pressmen and bookbinders as well as by imports from more distant foreign countries.

Wacław Łastouski (1883–1938) był pierwszym białoruskim teoretykiem i historykiem kultury książki. Artykuł przedstawia działalność Łastouskiego na tle wydarzeń polityczno-społecznych jego czasów, rolę jego prac dla nauki i kultury Białorusi, oceny w oczach współczesnych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono napisanemu na emigracji dziełu Łastouskiego Гісторыя беларускай (крыўскай) кнігі (The history of Belarusian (Kryvian) book, Kowna 1926) i jego roli w białoruskiej bibliologii w latach 20. i współcześnie.Artykuł ujawnia nowe materiały, które pozwalają uściślić niektóre fakty z ostatnich lat życia Łastouskiego na zesłaniu w Saratowie w latach 30., gdzie kontynuował swoje prace nad historią książki.

Vaclau Lastouski (1883-1939) was the first Belarusian theoretician and historian of book culture. The article presents Lastouski’s activity set against the background of political-social events at the time, the contribution of his works to Belarus’ science and culture, and opinions about him by his contemporaries. The author pays particular attention to Lastouski’s book written after his emigration, Гісторыя беларускай (крыўскай) кнігі (The history of Belarusian (Kryvian) book, Kaunas 1926), and to its role in Belarusian bibliology in the 1920s and today. The article reveals new documents that provide more detailed information about the last years of Lastouski’s life in exile in Saratov in the 1930s, where he continued his work on the history of the book.

W artykule przedstawiono nowe źródła pozwalające rozszerzyć dotychczasowe badania nad dawnym piśmiennictwem Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Przywołane przykłady odzwierciedlają jednocześnie współczesne metodologie literackie i bibliologiczne. Bibliotekoznawcy wykorzystują metodę funkcjonalną i stosują dyrektywę badawczą „kultura książki” m.in. w odniesieniu do wileńskich środowisk klasztornych. Geopoetyka i geokrytyka umożliwiają ujawnianie znaczenia przestrzeni, miejsc pamięci czy geograficznych nazw własnych. Zastosowanie tej metody wobec twórczości Daniela Naborowskiego czy diariusza Bogusława Kazimierza Maskiewicza pozwala na wydobycie z tych tekstów specyfiki podejścia do mniej lub bardziej znanych miejsc na mapie Rzeczypospolitej, zwłaszcza Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Metoda badań strukturalnych, stosowana zarówno przez literaturoznawców, jak i bibliologów, oparta na analizie ramy literacko-wydawniczej, została przedstawiona na przykładzie Lwowskiego rękopisu zawierającego wiersze okolicznościowe poświęcone Radziwiłłom birżańskim oraz na podstawie nieznanego, unikatowego druku przekładu Niektórych psalmów Dawidowych Salomona Rysińskiego. Zwrócono także uwagę na znaczenie badań retorycznych, wskazując możliwość wykorzystania nieznanych mów świadczących o kulturze oratorskiej Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego.

The article presents the new sources which allow to broaden the existing research on the old literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The cited examples reflect contemporary literary and bibliological methodologies. Bibliologists use a functional method and apply a research directive called the “book culture” to (among others) the Vilnius monastic communities. Geopoetics and geocriticism reveal the significance of the space, places of remembrance or geographic names. Applying this method to the work of Daniel Naborowski or Boguslaw Kazimierz Maskiewicz’s diary enables to show the specifics of these author’s approach to some more or less known places on a map of the Kingdom of Poland and especially the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Structuralist method, used both by the literary critics and bibliologists, based on the analysis of literary-publishing frame was presented through two examples: the Lviv manuscript containing occasional poems dedicated to the Birże Radziwiłł family and the previously unknown, unique print of the translation of some David’s psalms by Salomon Rysiński. In the article it has been also highlighted the importance of rhetorical research and indicated the possibility of using unknown orations which show the oratory culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The aim of the article is to characterize the phenomenon of digital book culture, which is a manifestation of the (traditional) book culture on the digital-network environment of the Internet and the World Wide Web. The Internet and WWW were largely developed under the influence of book culture. Within this phenomenon are transferring the achievements of book culture to the Internet; convergence of the Internet and the book; implementation of the bibliological processes into the Web; fulfilment of an ancient idea of gathering and sharing full corpus (a universe) of information (knowledge, content) as well as the idea of creating the universe of quanta of information (Web conceptually, metaphorically and structurally refers to information management methods developed in the book culture). Thus, the most crucial aspect of the digital book culture is the phenomenon of the book per se and the processes related to it as a pattern for the Internet, and especially Web, communication.

Celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie zjawiska cyfrowej kultury książki, która jest manifestacją kultury książki w środowisku cyfrowo-sieciowym Internetu i World Wide Web. Internet i WWW ukształtowane zostały w dużym stopniu w duchu kultury książki. W ramach wyróżnionego zjawiska mieści się: przenoszenie do Internetu zdobyczy kultury książki; proces konwergencji mediów książki i Internetu; przeprowadzanie w Webie procesów bibliologicznych; realizacja znanej ze starożytności idei zgromadzenia i udostępnienia pełnego korpusu informacji (wiedzy, treści), a także idei stworzenia skwantyfikowanego uniwersum informacyjnego (Web konceptualnie, metaforycznie i strukturalnie nawiązuje do wypracowanych w kulturze książki metod organizacji i zarządzania informacją). A zatem kluczowym aspektem cyfrowej kultury książki jest zjawisko książki per se oraz procesy z nią (książką) związane jako wzór dla komunikacji w Internecie oraz w szczególności w Webie.

The study analyzes how the content of prayer books changes in relation to aspects such as the title and form of the book, and the gender of the target reader. The study works with the prayer book Rajská růže [Paradise Rose] and examines three different title variants (Ljbezně kwětaucý Ragská Růže, Duchownj Ragská Růže, Libokwětaucý Ragská Růže). The examined corpus includes both printed and handwritten prayer books. In addition to the title and the form of the book (i.e., printed vs. handwritten), the gender of the intended reader is taken into consideration (i.e., whether it was intended for men, women, both sexes or unspecified). A content analysis and comparison of different variants of the examined prayer books allows us to observe significant changes. Although the prayer book Rajská růže may initially seem as if it is multiple editions of a single work, in reality, the content varies considerably in the specific versions of the book, largely determined by the form of the book and the particular title.

In 1506, the printer Liechtenstein published the “Biblij Cžeská w Benátkach tisšten” (Bohemian Bible printed in Venice). The Venetian Bible (as it is commonly called) was written in Czech and was commissioned by three Prague residents. This article aims to show the Czech Bible of 1506 as an interesting “object” that somehow connects two very distant cultural realities of the early sixteenth century: Venice, the most important center of European printing, especially humanist printing, and Prague, the center of Utrakism. This study will focus on three aspects: the situation of Bohemian printing art in the early sixteenth century, which has received the most attention; the reasons why the Bible is a “printed artifact”; and finally, the choice of Venice as the place of publication. The paper concludes with a brief reflection on the legacy of the Venetian Bible – a hybrid of two book cultures.

W 1506 roku drukarz Liechtenstein wydał w Wenecji „Biblij Cžeská w Benátkach tisšten” (Biblia czeska drukowana w Wenecji). Biblia wenecka (jak powszechnie się ją nazywa) była napisana w języku czeskim i została zamówiona przez trzech mieszkańców Pragi. Praca ma na celu zbadanie czeskiej Biblii z 1506 roku jako ciekawego „przedmiotu”, który w pewien sposób łączy dwie bardzo odległe rzeczywistości kulturowe z początku XVI wieku: Wenecję, najważniejsze centrum europejskiego drukarstwa, szczególnie humanistycznego, i Pragę – centrum utrakwizmu. Niniejsze badanie skoncentruje się na trzech aspektach: sytuacji czeskiej sztuki drukarskiej na początku XVI wieku, której poświęcono najwięcej miejsca; powodach, dla których Biblia jest „artefaktem drukowanym”; wreszcie wyborowi Wenecji jako miejsca publikacji. Praca kończy się krótką refleksją nad dziedzictwem Biblii weneckiej – hybrydy dwóch kultur książkowych.

Nel 1506 esce a Venezia, presso lo stampatore Liechtenstein, la Biblij Cžeská w Benátkach tisšten (Bibbia ceca stampata a Venezia). La Bibbia di Venezia (come è comunemente indicata) è in ceco ed è commissionata da tre cittadini praghesi. Il lavoro intende indagare  la Bibbia ceca del 1506 come un “oggetto” curioso che, in qualche modo, unisce a inizio del XVI secolo due realtà culturali molto distanti tra loro: quella di Venezia, centro nevralgico della stampa europea e in particolare di quella umanista, e quella di Praga, centro dell’utraquismo. Tale indagine si soffermerà su tre aspetti: la situazione della stampa ceca a inizio Cinquecento, cui verrà dedicato maggiore spazio; i motivi alla base della Bibbia come testo da stampare; infine, le criticità della scelta di Venezia. Conclude il lavoro una breve riflessione sul lascito della Bibbia di Venezia, un ibrido di due culture del libro, nella storia della stampa ceca.
