The subject of the article is the discovered prayer book of the bishop of Chełmno Wikbold Dobilstein (1363–1385). As the history of the manuscript is closely connected with the fate of its owner, the fi rst part of the article addresses the biography of the bishop, particularly the years spent „in exile”: Wikbold left the diocese in 1376 aft er a conflict with local knights and the Teutonic Order. He first settled down in the court of Karthaus (Kartuzy) in Koblenz, and later in the Cistercian Abbey in Altenberg. This was probably the time when the prayer book containing works belonging to the Rhine mystical school were created. It has an impressive cover made by an unknown bookbinder from Cologne from the circle of the Master of the Book of Vows in the second half of the 1370s- the 1380s. The bishop probably bequeathed the prayer book to his library in the castle in Lubawa – it later became the property of the Bernandine convent there. After the convent was cassated in 1821, the prayer book was passed over to the library of a secondary school in Chojnice, and in 1946 it was transported to the University Library in Toruń. It was not until recent years that the abbreviated name of its author was identified as Wikbold Dobilsten.
Access to these sources is hindered due to lacking bibliographies and documentary reviews. The author applies traditional typoogy of bibliological sources to present potential storage location of specific types of documents, and their potential usefulness in different types of research problems. Search methods and recommended direction of further studies are also discussed. Particular attention is paid to the possibilities offered by digitalisation of library and archival resources.
In the Missionary Priests’ Congregation Library in Stradom in Cracow, two books have been found that used to belong to the famous library of the Polish king, Sigismundus Augustus. The monograph on the King’s collection written by Alodia Kawecka-Gryczowa contains a catalogue of all the books belonging to it so far discovered. This article, however, extends Kawecka-Gryczowa’s catalogue by the addition of two books that have remained unknown until now. After the king’s death, part of his book collection went to the Jesuit college in Vilnius, and part of it remained with Queen Anna Jagiellon, who was her brother’s testator. Both of the newly found volumes are medical prints which Queen Anna gave as gifts to her doctors, Sylwester Roguski and Hieronim of Poznań. Like other volumes belonging to Sigismundus Augustus’ collection, these books are bound in wood boards covered in brown leather, with the King’s superexlibris on the upper cover and the property formula SIGISMUNDI AVGUSTI REGIS POLONIAE MONVMENTVM on the lower cover.

W Bibliotece Księży Misjonarzy na Stradomiu w Krakowie odnaleziono dwie książki należące niegdyś do słynnej biblioteki polskiego króla Zygmunta Augusta. Alodia Kawecka-Gryczowa stworzyła monografię królewskiej książnicy, w której zawarła katalog wszystkich odnalezionych dotąd dzieł, niniejszy artykuł uzupełnia go o dwie nieznane dotąd pozycje.

The article deals with several manuscripts from the Olomouc chapter library and printed books from the former library of the Olomouc Jesuits. It deals with their origin and previous owners, and it examines the question of their possible connection with the royal library of Buda. Nevertheless, it views these books mainly through the lens of tegumentology, which has been overlooked by scholars so far. It then uses some of the bindings under study to document the influences that began to manifest themselves in Central European bookbinding studios thanks to bindings made for Matthias Corvinus and his successors.
This article discusses the bindings of a set of four books that once formed part of the library of Szymon Rudnicki, the Bishop of Warmia, and are currently kept in the Archdiocesan Archive in Gniezno. Three bindings from this set were made in a single, local bindery workshop. Each of the discussed bindings bears the supralibros indicating the ownership of the book. The article presents two types of the supralibros of the bishop that may indicate the latter’s bibliophile interests.

Using late Gothic bindings as examples, the author of the article examines terminological problems associated with leaves or fragments of leaves added to books during binding. She defines the various elements, i.e. pastedowns, flyleaves, sewing guards, guards or spine linings. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the variety of solutions used by bookbinders as well as various functions of the binding elements. Particular emphasis is put on cases that question or at least encourage reconsideration of the definitions of these elements.
This article describes the bindings of three sixteenth-century prints that once belonged to the rich collection of Wojciech Mieliński, who was the Abbot of Trzemeszno and who died in 1621. The decoration of these bindings indicates that thay most probably came from Melchior Nering’s bookbinding workshop while that craftsman was still connected with Poznań. The three volumes in question are currently kept in the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno.

The remains of the late medieval book collection belonging to the Poznań Canon, Mikołaj Hesken of Kościan (died 1485), are currently held in the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań. Conducting research on this collection, Rev. Kamil Kantak described it paying special attention to the ‘marks’ on the covers of the books. Having analysed the collection in detail, the author concluded that the mentioned ‘marks’ are supralibros of Mikołaj Heksen stamped with seals. The further research revealed that they are valuable materials for the history of the bookplates in Poland, as these are the oldest supralibros in Wielkopolska (Greater Poland).

The article examines one of the so-called “Jagiellonian fi nishing rolls”, which were used in decorating by an anonymous bookbinder (or bookbinders) from Poznań from around 1547 until 1560s. The roll shows 5 carefully designed medallions with busts of a pope and some European rulers (Paul III, Sigismund the Old, Sigismund Augustus, Charles V and Ferdinand I) as well as an arabesque ornament. Today we know 22 bindings with such decorations, kept in libraries in Poland, Russia and Germany. The author of the article formulates some hypotheses concerning the time the roll was made as well as its maker and the person who may have commissioned it. He explores the tradition of making such fi nishing rolls in Europe. The characteristic composition and selection of motifs on the Poznań tool are presented against the background of model graphics showing “galleries” of portraits of European rules (they were made by e.g. Virgil Solis or Augustin Hirschvogel). The author describes the complex relations between the Habsburgs and the Jagiellons as well as the role of the papacy in these relations. This is necessary to establish the ideological and political basis of the iconographic concept of the roll. In addition, the author analyses the iconographic models of the portraits presented on the medallions. He indicates their originals among graphic works, paintings as well as numismatic works (coins and medals).

XVI w. Radełko ukazuje 5 starannie opracowanych medalionów z popiersiami papieża i władców europejskich (Paweł III, Zygmunt Stary, Zygmunt August, Karol V i Ferdynand I) oraz ornament arabeskowy. Virgil Solis, Augustin Hirschvogel).
