In what way does a book exist? What is its ontic status? Does the function constitute its essence, as some people believe? In that case, is the forgotten and unread book still a book? Maybe it lives a life that resembles its author’s life, as the supporters of anthropomorphisation of books claim? To what extend the text of a book is self-sufficient as far as the meaning is concerned and how far is it determined by the reader? Has the changes in the form affected the changes of the essence of a book? And on what grounds is the still prevalent opinion about the books’ value based? The article is devoted to the abovementioned issues and addresses the question of the essence of a book

The subject of this article is developmental bibliotherapy as a tool of work with young people. On the basis of their own experience (open test), it will shed light on the personality-forming function of contact with literature. Belles-lettres has undeniable impact on people, especially at the beginning of their journey through life. It indicates priorities, sets the azimuth for life goals and searches. Thanks to it people gain essential knowledge about the world and other people around them, not to mention a ready-made punchline. The role of literature in development of 8human personality is unquestionable and cannot be overestimated. Is it, however, appreciated enough by young people today? Has the present civilization, based on complex, lapidary, image-based communication, moved contacts with books into the background? If so, are there any tools making it possible to reverse that process? The author of the article will try to answer those questions basing the answers on the practical activities of bibliotherapeutic nature, executed as a part of classes with third-year students of Pedagogy at the State Higher School of Technology and Economics in Jarosław oriented at shaping positive attitude towards belles-lettres as a tool of self-realization and deepening one’s knowledge about the world.

The kept collection of incunabula is not uniform in terms of their origins. Although this is a small collection, in many ways it is interesting concerning both authors, areas of their knowledge, notes of origin or their binding. The library has in total twelve bibliographical positions in ten volumes. They are the work of workshops located in four urban centres: Venice, Cologne, Strasbourg and Augsburg. All of the collection of books are concentrated around four major groups: Scripture, Theology, law and philosophy. The authors of those works were the most prominent representatives of medieval science. Part of the incunabula’s cover are from the period of the book’s print (turn of fifteenth and sixteenth century), part of them are from the later period.

This study aims to present the importance and current situation of the libraries in Kosovo Correctional Service; their function and effect on prisoners’ daily lives, rehabilitation, well-being and informal education. To reach this purpose three questions were raised: Do libraries help with prisoners’ informal learning, rehabilitation and reintegration in KCS? Are the prisoners willing to loan books from prison libraries? Do prison libraries in Kosovo offer enough books in different languages for prisoners who come from different ethnic and religious backgrounds? This research is presented through qualitative data, a literature review and interviews as instruments of the research dedicated to prison libraries within KCS and their effect on prisoners’ wellbeing and education. The study results showed that prison libraries impact positively the lives of the incarcerated population while they are paying their debts to society in Kosovo prisons for the crimes committed. Prisoners are eager to borrow medium number of books present in different languages and genres offered to them within Correctional and Detention centers all around Kosovo.

The Canadian-Polish Research Institute was founded in 1956 by Wiktor Turek, who was also its first president. The following presidents of the Institute were: Tadeusz Krychowski (1963-1972), Rudolf K. Kogler (1972-1995), Edward Sołtys (1995-2011), and Joanna Lustański (from 2011). During the sixty years of its existence, the Institute published about 50 books. There are several dominant thematic profiles among them: 1. bibliographic books (Polonica Canadiana, The Polish Language Press in Canada); 2. registers of Polish scientists and a list of Polish artists, writers and musicians; 3. memories; 4. monographs on the history of Polish settlement in Canada, as well as Polish institutions and organizations; 5. other publications: an English translation of Melchior Wańkowicz's Three Generations, a volume of poetry and prose by Danuta Bieńkowska – Beetwen the Shores, a monograph on the sciences of law by prof. Tadeusz Grygier Sprawiedliwość, czyli istota moralności, zdrowia i prawa, and the book of Edward Sołtys Black Ribbon Day. The publishing achievements of the Canadian-Polish Research Institute are of paramount importance for promoting the contribution of Poles living in Canada. This participation includes the activity of Polish engineers, scientists, artists, clerics, veterans, social and political activists. Their presentation in the form of studies issued by the Institute is an important element of the Polish public and historical diplomacy.

The first historically confirmed records of the library of Szczyrzyc monastery are from the time of abbot Joahim I Cieniawski (1592-1607). Among the 40 titles of books recorded during the visitation in 1597 was: six antiphonals, eight missals, five psalters, four graduals, two copies of the Bible, homiliarz, kolektarz, the life of St. Stanislaus bishop and martyr, the St. Benedict’s rule and also Liber Definitorum, which is the book of the resolution of the General Chapters of the Cistercian. The first catalogue of books was made in 1755 and was entitled Cathalogus librorum Monasterij Ciricensis iuxta alphabetum authorum mense Augusto Anno Domini 1755. Conscriptus. It is a pity that only two initials cards including a list of books within the letter “A” were preserved until modern times. Three nineteenth century inventories provide full knowledge about this collection of books taking into account the title of a book, the author’s name, the description of a book (place and year of publication) and format of a book. The person who wrote the book made their thematic segregation. Undoubtedly the number of books, titles and in particular the authors demonstrate the need and the importance which the Szczyrzyc monastery given to the books which reading had to help the monk in his pilgrimage to God.

The monastery dedicated to St Elijah in Czerna was founded by Agnes of Teczynska Firlej in 1631. From its beginning the monastery collected works both for the celebration of liturgy and so as to deepen the knowledge and spirituality in the areas of asceticism, preaching and theology. Books usually came from donations and legacies. Currently in the resource library of old prints in Czerna there are 14 incunabula. Incunabula are not uniform provenance band books. They come from the ecclesiastical institutions, from individual person and from the clergy. Some of incunabula have an original binding, other have been replaced or refurbished. Though it is a small collection of books, in terms of quality it reflects the interests and needs of the environment. The smudged corners of the pages and the highlights made of part of the text can testify that these books were used by monks in deepening their knowledge.

Considering Istoriia istorika (The History of an Historian), the memoirs of the medievalist Aaron Yakovlevich Gurevich, the author discusses the genre of egohistoire in the second half of the twentieth century. She points out differences in approaches to historiographical research and society, using the examples of Gurevich’s memoirs and the memoirs of Jacques Le Goff , with whom the Russian medievalist had a positive relationship. Apart from Gurevich’s critical approach to the Soviet regime, she discusses the concessions he was compelled to make to it. She argues that a distinctive trait of Gurevich’s was his emphasis on the responsibility of the historian towards himself and, chiefly, towards the public.

Based on the analysis of Diary of Old Age and Vladimir Propp’s letters to his friend Victor Shabunin, the article attempts to defi ne not only the circle of the scholar‘s readings, but also his strategy of reading and evaluating books. His choices are far from systematic. He reaches both for the texts present to him „contemplative and savoury durability” (Barthes’ defi nition), and for those that impressed him with sincerity and authenticity, as well as those that fi t into the circle of his sublime interests.
