The article presents the relationship between the grit factor and the mental well-being of young people recruited from high school students in Podlaskie Voivodeship (n = 275). The study was conducted using the Short Grit Scale (SGS) by A.L. Duckworth, the Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWBS) by C. Ryff and the Cantril’s Ladder of Life Scale. The obtained results indicate significant positive relationships of grit with the current assessment of the quality of life and mental well-being in each of the six dimensions measured with C. Ryff’s PWBS tool (autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance). Since grit is a construct showing positive relationships with well-being and quality of life and a modifiable one – it can be shaped at an early stage of development – it should be considered as an important element when drawing future educational plans.

The paper deals with the analysis of a historical document which describes in detail the course of the perambulation of the borders of the town Banská Bystrica in 1820. The document named Metales consists of a text part and a map part. The text part is divided into seven chapters describing specific border sections. Through a detailed analysis of one of the border sections, the southwest part of town borderline common with neighbouring domain of Radvanský family we learn not only about the exact course of the borderline, but also about the location and owners of land near the borderline, participants of the perambulation and historical toponymy, as well as the form and location of border markers. The document captures the course of control of old border markers – border piles (heaped soil or stones), border stones and border signs, as well as the making of new border markers.

In this paper, the borderlands, in the context of the psychological perception of frontiers, were presented. The common relationships between different nationalities living in border twin towns was a principal point of analysis. During the investigation two main research questions were asked: Is a frontier a barrier or a bridge in the common relationships between nationalities living on both sides of the borderline? and Does the trans-border casual social integration stimulate openness to neighbours? The study was conducted in two double towns: la Jonquera (Els límits) - Le Perthus at the Spanish-French border and Słubice - Frankfurt-am-Oder at the Polish-German border. The data were gathered from surveys by questioning locals and visitors during street polling. The design of the questionnaire included three main groups of questions relating to: 1) the perception of the borderline and the role of the border twin towns, 2) the attitude towards neighbours and identification with the borderlands, and 3) the future of the borderline in the context of the twin towns existence and cross-border linkages. The results showed that the historical circumstances and cultural background play a crucial role in the current bilateral interrelations between nations sharing the common space of the twin towns. These two aspects of the borderland have an influence on the psychological perception of the border that creates mental boundaries in local societies. However, as the results proved, the necessity of living together pushed locals to be more open-minded, which as a consequence supported the establishment of social bonds.

The paper focuses on the problematisation of the sense of belonging/indigenisation in the prose of the modern Serbian writer, Milovan Danojlic. In it, the author fictionalises his own life experience in the form of lyrical records. The thematic focal point of this prose is the painstaking effort of the narrator-hero to build his own identity. Changing places of residence, the narrator is constantly faced with the cognizance that he has always been on the borderline between two worlds, ever unaffiliated and having the need to (critically) identify himself in relation to both these planes. Being on the borderline becomes the essence of his self-being, and the change in the narrative position (and the place of residence) results in the creation of different identities: personal, local, national and cultural. The feeling of estrangement and the deeply controversial, yet emotional relationship to what he considers as his own results from his childhood and a traumatic relationship with his father, which represents an obsessively recurrent topic in Danojlic’s prose. Feeling somewhat alien everywhere (identifying himself with a cactus), first in his own family, then as a farm kid in town, and finally as a member of one culture who lives in another, the narrator is faced with the paradoxical cognizance: the more he tries to escape from his homeland, the more powerfully he recognizes it in himself.

Ethics as a codified value system enters into relations with politics and its representatives in the context of events, platforms, and information. Particularly important for the borderline of ethics and politics is the platform of public media. Within this space there is a problem of media ethics, understood as reflection on ethical codes and controversial media cases. This article describes the case of Radio Mercury journalist released from his post after an interview with European Member of Parliament Ryszard Czarnecki. The purpose of this study is to present the dynamics of communication processes between media and politicians in the contex of ethics. This text is intended to discuss aspects of media ethics and journalistic ethics in the context of specific media reports. The study uses mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) that focus on media discourse analysis.

Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pozwalają dostrzec podobieństwa i różnice w deklaracjach poczucia tożsamości osób w wieku późnej dorosłości żyjących w Cieszynie oraz Czeskim Cieszynie. Kształtowanie się tożsamości to proces długotrwały, czasochłonny, refleksyjny z elementami wewnętrznej retrospekcji. Berlin and the city’s inhabitants are the characters of Wanat’s reportage. The book is a collection of  talks and evidence record of meetings with particular people. Every Berliner has their own story.  While presenting the stories, the author spotlights the complexity of the city. The capital city, like any other metropolis, is a medley of various cultures and behaviours. The city reflects the borderline of the features which both unite  and divide the society and endanger their peaceful coexistence. The border areas are particularly exposed to conflicts. For onlookers, Berlin seems to be a coherent mosaic. However, it is drastically divided. This incoherence is shown in varied characters of the districts, it is reflected in language, too. Resentments, stereotypes and generalisations add to this discrepancy. A peaceful coexistence in such a cosmopolitan hybrid city requires building an agora and bridges. They create the background to begin a dialogue. Liberal democracy helps to introduce socio-cultural structures, as well as mental patterns of perception. This prevents antagonisms in society. A lesson of tolerance averts hostility and others are not treated as if they were strangers. Learning an appropriate attitude towards the dissimilar takes a long time, and the challenge must be repeatedly undertaken if society is to remain united. Analysing such a big city as Berlin, Ewa Wanat illustrates complex problems of contemporary Europe.

The article deals with Italian and English modal auxiliaries, considered as non-grammatical competitors of grammatical means, i.e. the verbal mood, acting as indicators of different modal meanings. Within the modality of the utterance, defined as “the grammaticalization of a speaker’s (subjective) attitudes and opinions”, modal auxiliaries may not only be associated with epistemic and deontic modal meanings; they may also contribute to the expression of various illocutionary acts. Thus, they are observed on the borderline between different types of modality. The tense and mood of two Italian modal auxiliaries, potere and dovere, are investigated with the aim to demonstrate how their inflexional forms may correspond to several English modal auxiliaries expressing the same modal meaning. At the same time, the constructions with modal auxiliaries may be considered as analytical deontic and epistemic moods that contribute to the explicit indication of a particular modal meaning.
