Despite wide interest in born global organizations, their knowledge management activities have not been investigated in detail by neither Polish nor international researchers. The study used a qualitative method, based on the interpretation techniques, relevant for the grounded theory. This approach was dictated by the weak structure of the research problem, which required exploratory methods, and a look from the perspective of practitioners, because from the point of view of the theory it was not possible to formulate answers to the posed problem. Research techniques, presented in the article, were designed in accordance with the guidelines of conducting qualitative research. Additionally, the research results were presented, which allowed to discover key factors of knowledge management in born global organizations.

Rapid internationalisation is a very popular research theme internationally. Verifying the links between familiness of the investigated firms and the accelerated internationalisation among Polish family firms can be very promising. The objective of the paper is to identify the rapid internationalisation path of Polish family firms while going international from the comparative perspective of the familiness. The paper presents the research results of the survey conducted in the turn of 2013-2014 among 216 firms, including 88 family businesses. Based on the calculations we can assume that the average time of internationalisation measured from the establishment is the longer in case of family firms than non-family firms. It can be with the line to the statement that born globals are more frequently met among non-family firms.

Companies which do not follow traditional internationalization path, but start international activities immediately after their founding, are called born global companies in the international literature. This relatively new type of international entrepreneurship can be challenging due to limited international experience and lack of resources. It seems even more difficult to internationalize a venture directly from Europe to the Chinese market. The purpose of the paper is to analyze potential opportunities and threats for European born globals entering the Chinese market. The study shows that the main opportunities provided by the Chinese market are: its size, rapid growth (which is, however, slowing down), increasing consumer middle class, modern infrastructure, cheap workforce supply, improvement in workforce qualifications and political stability. Unfortunately, there are also some threats of rapid internationalization in the Chinese market which are caused by cultural, social and political differences. The main threats of the Chinese market are: rising costs, slowing market growth, increasing competition, HR problems, dumping, protectionism and legal issues (including intellectual property rights, corruption, lack of transparency, certifi cation and requirements concerning technical norms).

Purpose: The article discusses the pace of internationalization by empirically verifying the speed of internationalization of Polish international firms and identifying which pattern is more frequently used by international startups from Poland: born global or born regional. Methodology: The article employs a quantitative approach. It builds on a sample of 355 international businesses from Poland (CATI survey). Findings: By using t test, U test, and ANOVA, the analysis showed a correlation between the compa-ny’s international strategy as a planning instrument and the speed and scope of internationalization. Research limitations/implications: Based on prior studies from other parts of the globe, we assume that among Polish companies the number of born regionals – i.e. businesses that are international from their inception – is growing, while their activity is mainly restricted to the European Union. Among Polish international firms, there are many born global. In the studied sample (selected randomly), the share of born globals was 61.5%, and global startups 43%, which is a very high rate. The results enable to adopt a hypothesis that the number of Polish-born regionals is relatively high in comparison with the traditional path and born globals. Originality/value: The article describes one of the first studies to (i) capture the phenomenon of born regionals in Poland and (ii) enrich empirical studies on emerging markets such as Poland.

For more than 20 years, researchers have been investigating the phenomenon of born global organizations. Previous studies indicated knowledge as a key factor influencing rapid internationalization. However, the analysis of dominant knowledge management (KM) strategy of those entities is still missing. The investigation of its character is necessary as it determines the shape of KM processes inside companies. In this article, the author presented the results of a two-year qualitative research conducted in born global organizations on the case of Polish game developers. The project is interdisciplinary in nature combining two research fields: knowledge management and entrepreneurship.

Based on literature in the field, the article examines the impact of the time factor on the international experience and level of internationalization of companies. The author seeks to identify the role of time in research on the internationalization of companies. The article is based on a critical analysis of research studies on the internationalization of companies, with a special focus on process models, a network approach to internationalization, and reports on accelerated internationalization. In particular, the author deals with research reports on the time and speed of internationalization. The article presents a number of proposals concerning the role of time in research on the internationalization of companies. These are linked with increased experience in business operations on foreign markets, the speed of internationalization, and the relationship between the time and level of internationalization. The author finds that, in order to better understand the process of internationalization, it is necessary to include the time factor in the theory of internationalization. Ratajczak-Mrozek argues that the relationship between time and an increase in a company’s experience abroad is complex and non-linear. The same is true of the relationship between the time and level of internationalization, the author says. She adds that the level of internationalization should be determined on the basis of comprehensive measurements taking into account resources involved at various levels of a company’s operations. Measurements of the speed of internationalization should take into account the speed of the whole process, and not be limited to the speed of a company’s entry into foreign markets the author argues. This is particularly important for the study of “born global” companies, Ratajczak-Mrozek notes.
