The purpose of this paper is to formulate the problem of managing and mitigating the risks involved in the activities of business organisations operating in both domestic and international markets in the light of the fact that international markets are unstable. In the absence of coherent, unified and widespread mitigation mechanisms at the level of national economies and in the face of the speculative strategies being commonly adopted by businesses, international financial markets are becoming increasingly turbulent and companies must cope with rising expenses. Risk management should be a comprehensive process involving all aspects of the company’s business. It can be defined as taking a proactive approach to any potential risks and choosing an appropriate strategy for a given company to minimise the dangers it may face.

The purpose of the research is to focus on some of the challenges associated with business risk faced by entrepreneurs operationalizing in the sector ‘Processed and conserved fruit and vegetables’ in Stara Zagora region (Bulgaria). The authors point out the measures to reduce business risk associated with this sector, which measures are based on the data obtained by some modern methods for business risk analysis—the ‘break-even point analysis’ and the ‘percentage of variation’. Several indicators are calculated for the main three groups of the assortment structure: fruit and vegetable juices, conserved fruit and vegetables, and nuts and seeds. Knowledge and use of different methods for the analysis of business risk is a prerequisite for proper management for entrepreneurs. Their use would lead to the capture of warnings about a possible risk and taking appropriate action to prevent it.

Celem badań jest omówienie niektórych wyzwań związanych z ryzykiem biznesowym, przed którym stoją przedsiębiorcy prowadzący działalność w branży przetwórstwa i konserwowania owoców i warzyw w regionie Stara Zagora (Bułgaria). Autorzy wskazują środki służące ograniczeniu ryzyka biznesowego związanego z tą branżą, oparte o dane uzyskane za pomocą nowoczesnych metod analizy ryzyka biznesowego: analizy progu rentowności oraz procentu wariancji. Obliczono kilka wskaźników dla trzech głównych grup struktury asortymentu: soków owocowych i warzywnych, konserwowych owoców i warzyw oraz orzechów i nasion. Wiedza oraz zastosowanie różnych metod do analizy ryzyka biznesowego są dla przedsiębiorców warunkiem zasadniczym właściwego zarządzania. Ich wykorzystanie pomoże wychwycić sygnały świadczące o ewentualnym ryzyku i podjąć stosowne działania, aby mu zapobiec.

The aim of this article was to define, quantify and compare the significant attributes of business risk for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the selected regions of Slovakia. The data was collected through a questionnaire. The whole research was conducted in the Bratislava region on a sample of 102 SMEs, in the region of Trencin on a sample of 105 SMEs and in the Zilina region on a sample of 168 SMEs. Thus we compared important factors of business risk in the most economically developed region of the Slovak capital to the average regions of Trencin and Zilina. On the basis of the results of our research, we can conclude that the most important business risk is market risk in all regions. The average value of perceived market risk was higher than 50%. For this reason entrepreneurs have indicated the existence of negative trends in performance and profitability of their companies.

The Types of Business Risk Identified in Integrated Reporting

The paper presents the possibilities of identifying business risk on the basis of data disclosed in integrated reporting. The research method used relies on a review of Polish and foreign literatures and an empirical analysis of integrated reports disclosed in 2016. The structure of the reports, which complies with the most recent trends and international recommendations with regard to integrated reporting, confirms the hypothesis put forward in the paper. The concluding remarks aim to arouse interest in research on the possibilities of verifying and assessing disclosures related to the identification of risk in integrated reporting.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie możliwości identyfikacji ryzyka gospodarczego na podstawie danych zawartych w sprawozdawczości zintegrowanej. Jako metodę badawczą zastosowano przegląd literatury krajowej i zagranicznej oraz przeprowadzono analizę empiryczną ujawnionych raportów zintegrowanych za rok 2016. Struktura raportów, zgodna z najnowszymi trendami oraz zaleceniami światowymi w zakresie raportowania zintegrowanego, potwierdziła założoną w artykule tezę. Podsumowanie rozważań stanowi zachętę do zainteresowania badaniami nad możliwością weryfikacji i oceny ujawnień w zakresie identyfikacji ryzyka zawartych w sprawozdawczości zintegrowanej.

In the light of the act on the freedom of economic activity, private persons may run a single proprietorship business and act independently as entrepreneurs. This institution, as the most common form of undertaking business activity in Poland, fills a significant fragment of the labor market space. The formal requirements of running a single economic enterprise are basically minimal. The form seems to be convenient for a beginner entrepreneur. However, the growing one-man business can carry a number of legal or financial risks. The article pointed out main problems related to functioning of sole proprietorship in the context of regulations in Poland. As examples of minimizing the risk, solutions in the form of mediation, contractor’s financial credibility analysis, collateral of receivables and transforming into a commercial law company were offered.

W świetle ustawy o swobodzie działalności gospodarczej osoby fizyczne mogą prowadzić działalność gospodarczą jednoosobowo, występując wówczas samodzielnie jako przedsiębiorcy. Instytucja ta, jako najpowszechniejsza forma podejmowania działalności gospodarczej w Polsce, wypełnia znaczny fragment przestrzeni rynku pracy. Wymagania formalne prowadzenia jednoosobowej działalności gospodarczej są właściwie minimalne. Forma ta wydaje się wygodna dla początkującego przedsiębiorcy. Jednakże rozrastająca się jednoosobowa działalność gospodarcza może nieść za sobą szereg ryzyk prawnych bądź finansowych. W artykule wskazano na węzłowe problemy związane z funkcjonowaniem jednoosobowej działalności gospodarczej w kontekście uregulowań prawnych w Polsce. Jako przykłady minimalizacji ryzyka zaproponowano rozwiązania w postaci mediacji, oceny wiarygodności finansowej kontrahenta, zabezpieczenia wierzytelności oraz przekształcenia w spółkę prawa handlowego.

The article analyses franchising as a business model based on an economic relationship between the parties. The discussion of the early forms of franchising and of factors stimulating its development in Poland and the world is followed by the presentation of data showing franchise growth trends in Poland for, respectively, domestic and foreign brands. The article highlights the advantages of franchising, which allow it to resist economic crises, stimulate entrepreneurship and innovativeness, and minimise business risks. It also offers a number of comments, observations and conclusions on the synergies that both firms and the Polish economy as a whole can derive from franchising.
