Every beatification, especially every canonization inevitably entails the absoluteness of the papal primacy, mainly his infallibility. From the early years of the Church, there has been a strong correlation between recognizing the ho-liness of candidates’ life and recognizing the signs of God performed after the candidates’ death. And so it is up to this day. A miracle, consequently, being the evidence in the canonization law, is also the subject of proving. Therefore, before any miracle is announced, it is necessary to first prove it, in order to obtain an absolute moral certainty about the authenticity of the particular phe-nomena, which is alleged to exceed the laws of nature. This is why the expert witnesses are appointed, to analyze an alleged miracle in solely human terms and give the final opinion about its authenticity. Such proving begins on prem-ises of the diocese, where the miracle was alleged, and then the investigation proceeds to the Congregation premises, where further consultations are being held.
Among many titles, John Paul II fully deserves to be called the “Pope of Holiness” due to a record number of beatifications and canonizations that he made and an original doctrine on holiness. He wanted to put into practice the conciliar teaching on the universal call of Christians to holiness. In the Pope’s theology of holiness, the emphasis is placed on the Holy Trinity as the source of all holiness. In addition, he speaks of the manifestations, models and means leading to holiness, and thus of a specific “pedagogy of holiness”. John Paul II’s doctrine of holiness is closely related to his lifestyle, which was confirmed by the Church with his beatification (1 May 2011) and canonization (27 April 2014). Considering his doctrine, life and concern for the Christian shape of Europe, it is a legitimate expectation that he will soon be proclaimed a Doctor of the Church and Patron of Europe.
Among the many beatification processes initiated in individual dioceses, several of them attract special attention. Among the many figures, especially those whose candidacy for the altars resulted from heroism or martyrdom, there are people who are not obvious. These include politicians – parliamentarians who, as public figures, gave an example of their attachment to God and the Catholic faith in everyday life. Some of these trials, despite the fact that at least half a century has passed since the death of the candidates for the altars, it turns out that many of the candidates’ characters still arouse emotions, influencing contemporary politics. The aim of the article is to present the figures of parliamentarians with the status of the Servant of God and to show the spheres in which these figures affect the present day.

The Bulla issued by Clement IV on 26 March 1267 is the official document in which Saint Hedwig of Silesia was declared a Saint of the Catholic Church. An analysis of the papal document reveals that it is permeated with biblical spirit. This is manifested by numerous biblical references in the form of short citations, paraphrases of the excerpts from the Holy Scripture, biblical metaphors and mentions of biblical characters. The author of the Bulla used all those biblical references to outline the spiritual profile of Saint Hedwig and describe her role as a Saint who intercedes in Heavens for those who live on Earth. In the light of the Bulla, Saint Hedwig appears as a woman whose life was firmly grounded in the biblical foundations.
The paper is focused on the history of the ideological unification of the image of Hristo Botev, when a monolith biography of him was forged from numerous diverse narratives about his life. That canonical narrative was smooth and not contradictory. During 20-ties and 30-ties of XX c., when nationalism was rising into trendy social movement, the image of Botev was sanctified, sharing a row with Vasil Levsky and becoming a leading figure in Bulgarian national heroic pantheon. With his affirmation as a national emblem, Botev‘s image became the subject of commercial uses, which are considered using the concepts of „consumerist nationalism” (B. Penchev) and “consumption of identity” (Anne-Marie Thiesse). During the years of socialism Botev was present in a consumer culture that functioned as utopia for future prosperity beyond any economic logic. The national hero can be seen as connected to that utopia, while reading the books of impressions in the “Hristo Botev” National Museum in the town of Kalofer, where he was born. Visitors also show disappointment with the promised, but unrealized socialist prosperity. In post-socialist years the image of Botev falls into a conglomerate of Euro-centric, nationalistic, nostalgic-communist and commercial manifestations.
The difficulties concerning St Rocco’s canonisation commenced in the Middle Ages, largely due to the missing papal bull. Taking into account the popular piety and the need for establishing the rules of the canonisation process, a number of popes were searching for an optimal solution to this problem. This paper presents selected Holy See documents signed by a dozen of pontiffs spanning from the 10th till the 16th century which detail the canonisation procedure. Another set of sources regarding St Rocco’s case are his oldest hagiographies: Vita sancti Rochi by Francesco Diedo, Acta Breviora by an anonymous German author and La vie et légénde de Monseigneur saint Roch by Jehan Phelipot. They help to answer the question whether St Rocco was declared saint at the Council of Constance (1414–1418) or not. Finally, the liturgical sources as well as certain works of art point at the widespread cult of St Rocco as a protector against the Black Death. In conclusion, the author of this article offers a possible path to find the lost canonisation bull that might put an end to the questions arising around the saint.

The 7th Pilgrimage of the Holy Father to Poland was a special time for the Tarnowski Church community, because during the pilgrimage John Paul II was to come to Stary Sącz to canonize Saint Kinga. An important element of any liturgical meeting are song sand liturgical music. The present study aims to show various aspects of preparations in the musical field, from the liturgical theme of the celebration, through the performers, to the planned repertoire of songs. The canonization of Saint Kinga decided the subject matter of the texts, the performers were joined by choirs and orchestras, while the repertoire consisted of songs in honor of Saint Kinga, Eucharistic songs intended for the common singing of the entire community and choral works with orchestra accompaniment. Its character emphasized the very festive mood of this feast of faith.

The aim of the study was to show the need of a miracle in proving a canonization. We considered the subject of a miracle’s approval. Moreover, we studied the suggestions made by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints related to this topic. Then, we went through the procedures of canonization which was under a continuous development. In addition, we showed the miracle’s necessity and the requirements for its approval. The current procedure of canonization in the diocese and the Congregation’s requirements were presented in the final section. The value of the miracle’s evidence of proving the sanctity has been based on the legal text analysis made during the study.

From the very beginning the Church has been caring for the vocation to sanctity which is perceived as the core of Christian life. Teaching sanctity may have different forms. One of the most essential of them is presenting the example of one’s life. The figures of saints and blesseds are of great help during the process of becoming a mature person. They had a crucial educational function in John Paul II’s teaching as they encouraged to follow the ideal of sanctity. Therefore, the concept of numerous beatifications and canonizations in Pope’s teaching has pedagogical significance. Implementing the rules of the pedagogy of sanctity is the mission of the Church which should be recalled in the context of John Paul II’s canonization.

Article is devoted to the issue of the canonization of the so-called new-martyrs of the Balkans in the Orthodox Church, the issue that has not been in the Polish language studied yet. It concerns the saints who died for Christ after the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. The considerations on the subject is preceded by a short introduction on the role of the martyrs in the Church. Article also refers to the issue of nomenclature, i.e. the definition of the term “new-martyr”, and its appearance in Christianity. Nearly 300 of the new-martyrs of the period of Ottoman slavery are known by the name. This group includes people of different social groups: the hierarchy, the rulers, the monks, married priests and lay people. It is probably only a small part of people who have suffered the death during this period in defense of Orthodoxy. The researchers divided them into four groups, which, the author presents. Their cult for centuries was limited because of the fear of consequences from the Turkish authorities. Only part of them was canonized after 1821, when as a result of uprising the independence of the Greece was proclaimed. The article also contains a part in which the importance of the new-martyrs of the Ottoman period for the Orthodox Church and its faithful is explained. Their importance was emphasized already by their contemporaries. This importance is multi-faceted and refers to the role of the Church plays from its beginning by the martyrs.

The cult of saints is one of the features of the Orthodox Church. It differs from the worship of Roman Catholicism above all that is mainly due to the faith and belief communities. Very often it starts in the lives of people considered saintly. The Saints of then Orthodox Churches, unlike the saint of the Roman Catholic Church, are not a mediators between God and human, only helpers human in touch with God, and the helpers of God in contact with the human. The requirements for canonization are less formalized than in Roman Catholicism. Saints are also people especially meritorious for the Church and state (vide – Serbia, Russia), without much penetration in their spiritually-moral figure. Local Churches „abound” canonizations, creating Cathedrals of Saints, also in the form of icon images. This has to be proofof the holiness of the entire Church. For this reason, there are additional barriers between the local Churches; some canonizations are not mutually accepted. The criteria and the practice of canonization in Orthodoxy changed over the centuries. Because of the strong association of the local Churches and countries a significant impact on the canonizations were and still are political factors, which today is particularly evident in the Russian Orthodox Church and Serbian Orthodox Church.Orthodox cult of the saints grow from the culture of the faithful community and make the culture stronger. Due to the fact that the space church-driven in countries dominated by Orthodox Christianity intensively sacralized, this cult also affects the representatives of other social circles. The saints of the region, city or village are clearly present in the public consciousness, contributing to the identity of the local community, sometimes becoming national heroes. Thus, the Saints of the Orthodox Churches combine local communities, while at the same time can contribute to deepening the divisions between the local Churches

The text presents the early cult of St. Ludmila and the author’s disagreement with the opinion that the cult did not exist until the mid-12th century. The author opposes the view that not only was it not officially recognised but sometimes even opposed by the Prague bishops.
The starting point of this article is Pope Francis’s teaching on the experience of illness, suffering and death in COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his encouragement to follow the examples of saints and the blessed in these difficult times. The Author examines the following hypothesis: do the canonization processes, currently conducted by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, include figures who can inspire people experiencing illnesses and suffering? Does the Congregation conducts any canonization proceedings of doctors, nurses and medical personnel? The Author, in order to show the ecclesial value (momentum ecclesiale) of saints’ causes has selected several dozen figures closest to the modern man (i.e. from the 20th and 21st centuries) from among more than 3,500 martyrs and believers. Using the dogmatic-legal and theological-legal methods, the Author shows that in the jurisprudence of the Congregation people can find numerous examples to follow, regardless of their age and state or whether they have been affected by incurable diseases (e.g. Blessed Carlo Acutis, Alexia González-Barros or Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio) or disabilities (e.g. Fr. Aloysius Schwartz), or experiencing any other suffering (e.g. Benedetta Bianchi Porro). Among the venerable, holy and blessed servants of God there are authors of works on protection of health (St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta, St. Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan, Blessed Fr. Luigi Novarese, Blessed Mother Róża Czacka, Ursula Mezzini, Blessed bp. Álvaro del Portillo), doctors (e.g. Mariano Mullerat i Soldevila) and nurses of different specialties (Hanna Chrzanowska), midwives, the male nurse Luigi Bordino, medical students (e.g. Blessed Sandra Sabattini), Red Cross volunteers (María Pilar Gullón Yturriaga, Octavia Iglesias Blanco, Olga Pérez-Monteserín Núñez), professors of medicine (Blessed José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, Jérôme Lejeune), as well as people working during the pandemic (Blessed Irene Stefani, Fr. Saturnino López Novoa and others). They are regular modern people, merited in the field of science, candidates to the Peace Nobel Prize (Fr. Aloysius Schwartz ) or their laureates (John Paul II, Mother Theresa). They are all distinguished by their deep faith and practicing virtues to a heroic degree, especially the virtues of hope, love and faith. These people were willing to cross peripheries to bring relief to the suffering and the Church celebrates the “creativity of Christian charity” in them.

Spośród ponad 3,5 tysiąca męczenników i wyznawców dokonała wyboru kilkudziesięciu postaci czasowo najbliższych współczesnemu człowiekowi (z XX i XXI w.), aby ukazać walor eklezjalny (momentum ecclesiale) ich spraw. Alojzy Schwartz), różnorakim cierpieniem (Benedetta Bianchi Porro). Wśród czcigodnych sług Bożych, świętych i błogosławionych są twórcy dzieł służących ochronie zdrowia (św. Matka Teresa z Kalkuty, św. Maria Teresa Chiramel Mankidiyan, bł. ks. Luigi Novarese, bł. Matka Róża Czacka, Urszula Mezzini, bł. bp Álvaro del Portillo), lekarze (np. Mariano Mullerat i Soldevila) i pielęgniarki różnych specjalizacji (Hanna Chrzanowska), położne, pielęgniarz Luigi Bordino, studenci medycyny (np. bł. Sandra Sabattini), ochotniczki Czerwonego Krzyża (María Pilar Gullón Yturriaga, Octavia Iglesias Blanco, Olga Pérez-Monteserín Núñez), profesorowie medycyny (bł. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, Jérôme Lejeune), pracujący w warunkach epidemii (bł. Irene Stefani, ks. Saturnino López Novoa i in.). Z zapałem wychodzili na peryferie, by nieść ulgę cierpiącym. W ich osobach Kościół świętuje „kreatywność chrześcijańskiego miłosierdzia”.
The article contains an analysis of the attributes in iconographies of Saints, in particular tools, and their Polish and French names. In the first part the dictionary definitions of the word “attribute” are given, and then the indicated term “attribute” that designates essential elements of the form, is analyzed in relation to other terms and to the reality as designating elements in various fields over the centuries and now in informatics. In the following chapters – in historical perspective – attributes are described as identifiers of the presented figure in Christian culture and their classification according to form and subject. The criteria for their specification have been determined on the basis of the definition of “craft” included in the Polish Crafts Act and the organizational structure of the Polish Craft Association. The characterized groups of tools appearing as the attributes were illustrated with selected images of saints and blesseds from the 5th to the 13th century. For today’s man, the man of the digital era and robotics, more and more of these tools remain unknown, and their names become archaisms or are the subject of semantic evolution. The article finishes with the reflection on the contemporary iconographic composition of saints, sometimes secondary to other techniques of perpetuating official images accompanying the beatification and canonization. In these icons written according to the iconographic pattern of the East, the decreasing role of individual attributes (including tools) and the meaning of the spiritual element symbolically expressed by universal and common attributes are observed.

Opracowane grupy narzędzi występujące w funkcji atrybutów zostały ilustrowane wybranymi wizerunkami świętych i błogosławionych z okresu od V do XIII wieku. Artykuł zamyka refleksja nad współczesną kompozycją ikonograficzną świętych, nieraz wtórną do innych technik utrwalania oficjalnych wizerunków towarzyszących uroczystościom beatyfikacji i kanonizacji.
