The article offers editio princeps of a Greek epitaph discovered during the archaeological work of the Canadian Mission in Hambukol, a locality situated on the right-hand bank of the Nile, several kilometres to the north of Dongola, the capital of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria. The epitaph, constructed with the prayer ‘God of spirits and all flesh’, is dated to the ninth century on contextual and palaeographic grounds. It commemorates a certain Merki, who, according to the text, followed a splendid career in the state apparatus, which led from notarios to protodomestikos, i.e. the head of the royal office dealing with agriculture and fiscal matters.

Współczesne znaczenie kariery zawodowej dla człowieka ulega permanentnej zmianie, świadczą o tym zarówno kolejne próby zdefiniowania niniejszego zjawiska podejmowane na polu naukowym, jak i indywidualne sensy przypisywane mu przez podmiot. Uwarunkowań takiego stanu rzeczy należy dopatrywać się w przemianach współczesnej rzeczywistości, a konsekwencji także rynku pracy. Dynamizm i niestabilność jego struktury, oddziałuje na przebieg oraz jakość ścieżek rozwoju zawodowego jednostek, których odzwierciedleniem stają się nowopowstające modele karier. Cel niniejszego artykułu koncentruje się na dokonaniu przeglądu wybranych typów, wzorów oraz modeli kariery zawodowej oraz scharakteryzowaniu ich przeobrażeń w kontekście ponowoczesnego świata pracy.

The contemporary meaning of a professional career for a human being is undergoing permanent change, as evidenced by successive attempts to define this phenomenon in the scientific field, as well as individual senses assigned to it by the subject. Determinations of such a state of affairs should be seen in the changes of contemporary reality, and consequently also in the labor market. Dynamism and instability of its structure affects the course and quality of career development paths of individuals, which are reflected in the emerging models of careers. The aim of this article is to review selected types, patterns and career models and characterize their transformations in the context of the post-modern world of labor.
