LAMS Chat and Forum were used to conduct in-class online conversations with second year university students to raise the level of engagement with their compulsory class texts. These discussions overcame students’ reluctance to speak up in class, avoided the conversation being dominated by one or two of their classmates, could accommodate simultaneous small groups and moved the discussion to a student-centred activity. As LAMS Chat and Forum retains all previous history, students’ contributions could be reviewed at any time and formally assessed. The marked improvement in the students’ engagement with the texts has ensured the discussions will continue to be included in the program.

Participation in interactive games, especially those in immersive environments, is often employed in learning contexts to stochastically develop L2 learners’ language ability. However, typical measures of language ability often do not reflect pragmatic competencies. This study juxtaposes two elementary school ESL learners’ language ability, and facility with the media, with their politeness measures. Data was collected from out-of-school gameplay chat in a virtual environment designed for elementary school learners. Results suggest learners can express pragmatic miscues to interlocutors in the lean media of synchronous chat.

This article is focused on new forms of written communication, mainly computer-mediated communication. The main aim of this article is a detailed analysis of specific forms of written communication which exist in French chats. Special attention is given to phoneticizing neography which intends to adapt the written form of the word to its oral form. This is done to depict the conversational aspect of the communicative environment. After a short theoretical presentation, the article shows the frequency of techniques that the phoneticizing neography uses to « oralize » the written forms of computer-mediated communication. A huge richness of the phoneticizing neography is illustrated by concrete examples taken from our corpus.

The present paper deals with some features of the postmodern interpretation of myths. The author, focusing on the work of the famous Russian postmodern writer Viktor Pelevin, tries to describe how computer and Internet technologies influence a literary text. The Helmet of Horror (2005) is a multi-layered postmodernist text that radically reinvents the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane fragmenty badania leksyki czatu internetowego z wykorzystaniem metodologii korpusowej. Na początku autor przedstawia dotychczasową metodologię obecną w badaniach komunikacji w Internecie, po czym przechodzi do opisu metodologii wykorzystanej w referowanym badaniu. Czytelnik poznaje tutaj najistotniejsze cechy utworzonego korpusu pogawędek internetowych. Następnie autor przechodzi do opisu wybranych zagadnień kwantytatywnych badań leksyki czatu. Rozpoczyna od omówienia statystyk badanego korpusu. Dalej przedstawia analizę niestandardowego zapisu wyrazów, po czym przechodzi do zrelacjonowania ważniejszych obserwacji odnośnie charakterystycznych właściwości leksyki czatu.

The article discusses selected fragments of a corpus-based analysis of Internet chat room lexis. First, the author presents previously used methodologies for Internet communication studies. After that, he describes the methodology he used in his research. At this point, the reader becomes acquainted with the most crucial characteristics of the created corpus of Internet chats. Further, the author goes on to delineate selected elements of quantitative studies on chat room lexis. He begins with the portrayal of corpus statistics. Then, he proceeds to discuss non-standard spelling, after which, he reports on the most important observations as for the characteristics of chat room lexis.

English is perhaps the most important source of loan-words for the present French language. Our article is focused on new forms of written communication, mainly computer-mediated communication (CMC). The main aim of this article is to analyze the loan-words, especially the anglicisms that are used by chatters in various French chats. After examining the motivations of loan, the article studies the frequency of anglicisms in three chats and observes their grammatical adaptation in the context of CMC. A huge richness of anglicisms is illustrated by concrete examples taken from our corpus.
