Timeless attributes of children’s games, i.e. toys, have been made the subject of research. The authors focus on the toys received by children from Polish families during Christmas. The aim of these analyses is therefore to characterise Christmas children’s toys presented in two types of sources intentionally addressed to children: children’s literature and press. The research covers the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the following century. The article in its subject matter refers to the Authors’ earlier research on Christmas toys and is in line with the ever developing trend of research on toys from the historical and pedagogical perspective.

W artykule podjęto próbę wykorzystania metody biografii rzeczy do badań nad zabawką dziecięcą. Celem tekstu jest pokazanie możliwości zastosowania wybranych elementów biografii rzeczy w badaniach historyczno-pedagogicznych nad zabawką dziecięcą. Kwestia ta jest istotna, ponieważ polega na spojrzeniu z innej perspektywy na ową rzecz (przedmiot materialny), która do tej pory w badaniach pełniła rolę tekstu poddawanego analizie zgodnie z założeniami konstruktywizmu. Głównym celem takiego podejścia była rekonstrukcja zabawek i zabaw dziecięcych w różnych okresach historycznych. Wprowadzenie do badań biografii rzeczy pozwoli pokazać linearny ciąg życia zabawki – od jej powstania, poprzez przebywanie w ręku dziecka, czas hibernacji, do jej powrotu do życia. W tekście pokazano przykładowe życie lalki „szrajerki” w tzw. długim trwaniu. Przedstawiono sposób wyrobu przedmiotu, jego cel, rynek zbytu (pierwsze życie zabawki), czas hibernacji oraz drugie życie „szrajerki” jako eksponatu muzealnego, części kolekcji prywatnej i zabawki w ręku dziecka. Ta ostatnia opcja przywraca podstawową funkcję lalki – funkcję ludyczną.

The article attempts to use the biography of things in order to carry out research on children’s toy. The aim of the text is to show the possibility of using certain elements of the biography of things in historical and pedagogical research on a child’s toy. This issue is important because it makes it possible to look at a toy from a different perspective – as a thing (material object), which, until now, in the research has served as a text that has been analyzed in accordance with the assumptions of constructivism. The main purpose of this approach was the reconstruction of children’s toys and plays in various historical periods. Using the method of the biography of things in the research shall make it possible to present the linear life sequence of a toy - from its inception, through being in the child’s hand, the time of hibernation, until time when the toy returns to life. The text shows an example of the life of the Szrajerka doll in the so-called long period of duration. The author presents the way of producing the object, its purpose, market (the first life of the toy), time of hibernation and the second life of Szrajerka as a museum exhibit, a part of a private collection, or a toy in the hands of a child. The latter option restores the basic function of the doll – a ludic function.
