Celem pracy jest omówienie procesów determinujących ewolucję miasta. Ma ona charakter przeglądowy. W pierwszej części miasto zostało potraktowane jako jednostka społeczno-urbanistyczna oraz geograficzna. Kolejno omówiono model ewolucji miasta. Zakłada on wchodzenie miasta w nowe stadium rozwojowe, w którym miejska jednostka osadnicza dąży do bycia innowacyjną. Interdyscyplinarny charakter opracowania uzasadnia wykorzystanie dorobku takich dyscyplin naukowych, jak ekonomia, geografia, socjologia oraz urbanistyka.

The aim of this study, which takes the form of a review, is to explain the processes that determine the evolution of the city. The first part describes the city as a social-urban and geographical unit, and also discusses a model for the evolution of the city. It assumes that the city is entering a new stage of development, in which it aims to be innovative. The study draws on disciplines including economy, geography, sociology, and urban studies.
