The scope of Polish macro-economic data for assessing the level of socio-economic development of the country is largely limited because of the regional variation. Therefore there is a need for cyclic selection and the verification of criteria which allow identifying regions with a similar level of socio-economic development or those that clearly differ from the mean values. The aim of the study is to compare Poland’s provinces in terms of their socio-economic development, which helps identify the most similar regions as far as the adopted criteria are concerned.

This article discusses the theoretical aspects of regional economic systems. Particular attention was paid to the nature of the development of border regions and coastal regions under new geopolitical circumstances. The special aspects of the functioning of those territorial units in the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) were illustrated. The author has highlighted the role of the border effect which is closely related to border infrastructure (border crossings, border inspection and customs posts, communication, service, and logistics) as well as the possibility of exploiting the potential resources (land, forest, water, and leisure) extensively on both sides of the border. Great emphasis was put on the forms of international cooperation between inhabitants of border regions, institutions and organisations.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań dotyczących oceny poziomu rozwoju zrównoważonego województw Polski przeprowadzonej z wykorzystaniem wielowymiarowej analizy danych. Do analizy wykorzystano dane statystyczne w postaci wskaźników dostępne w statystyce publicznej za 2012 r. Wybrane zmienne dotyczyły ekonomicznych, społecznych i środowiskowych aspektów rozwoju zrównoważonego. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły na sporządzenie rankingu województw według wartości syntetycznego miernika rozwoju oraz pozwoliły na podział województw na grupy o zbliżonym poziomie rozwoju. Wyniki badań wskazały na istnienie zróżnicowania województw względem po-ziomu rozwoju zrównoważonego.

The paper presents research results concerning the assessment of the level of sustainable development of Polish regions conducted with the use of multivariate data analysis. For this analysis statistical data in the form of indicators available in the official statistics for 2012 were used. Selected variables was related to economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development. The study made it possible to draw up a ranking of provinces according to the synthetic indicator of development as well as the distribution of provinces into groups of similar level of development. Research results indicated the existence of a diversity between regions with respect to the level of sustainable development.
