The aim of this paper is to verify the capacities and limitations of the newspaper column (understood as a genre) as a tool for creating the image of its author. In the paper, the distinguishing features of a column are first presented, and then a hypothesis is proposed for predicting which attributes of its author may be generated by the column’s features. This hypothesis is juxtaposed with the results of empirical research. The main task of this research was to read the texts of one of two Polish columnists – Krzysztof Varga and Szymon Hołownia – and subsequently answer questions indicating the authors’ attributes. This procedure made it possible to recreate the image of the text’s author. The results demonstrated the influence of the column’s distinguishing features on the image of its author inferred by readers.

The paper deals with a well-known genre of joumals and newspapers - the column. The analysis of morę than 100 columns of Jiri Hai k (from the years 2006-2010) resulted in a conclusion that this Czech ioumalist (writing for an independent newspaper Pravo) is a successor of the best representa" ves of Czech democratic joumalism, Kareł Havllćek Borovsk> and Kareł Ćapek. A ffequent topie of a political writer J. Hanak is the conflict bctwcen the European integration and nationalism. His columns and other texts are marked b> a rich vocabulary, numerous metaphors based on an outstanding knowledge of history, by a sarcastic irony and extraordinary elaborated intertextual dimension.

The goal of the text was to indicate the image characteristics of an author of a verbal expression which were communicated through expressing generalising judgements, and to establish the difference between such generalisations depending on the given image characteristic. I used constructivism as the leading theory. In terms of methodology, I applied mixed methods: quantitative (quasi-experiment) and discourse analysis. The analysis indicated that generalisations are used for communicating the characteristics of: intelligent, critical, bluntly states her/his bold judgements, insightful, writes in an interesting way, realist, frank, while the receivers assign some of the characteristics depending on the degree of evaluation emphasis, reference to a taboo, utilisation of negation, and expressions using the 1st person plural.

The aim of the article is to reconstruct the linguistic image of the Poles on the basis of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s feuilletons. This image is determined by the speaker’s point of view. Creating his image of Polish society, Sienkiewicz adopted the following points of view: the POV of a Pole, the POV of a thrifty economist, the POV of a positivist and the POV of a Christian. As a Polish citizen, he criticizes his compatriots for the fact that they do not respect their native tongue. As a thrifty economist, he exposes numerous instances of their profligacy. As a positivist, Sienkiewicz notes the backwardness of the countryside and proposes specific initiatives to address this problem. Finally, assuming the perspective of a Christian, he unmasks false piety. This image of the Poles is predominantly negative. The fact that Sienkiewicz highlighted his compatriots’ weaknesses and focused on their wastefulness, rather than on their positive attributes, could be motivated by censorship concerns. Russian censors were very effective in suppressing all forms of manifesting Polish national identity and were more inclined to accept critical opinions.

The article investigates the relationship between a journalistic genre and its place of publication. The review and the feuilleton are one of the oldest genres, which date back to the mid-18th century. As it has turned out, the most important factor that stimulated changes in press writings was the developing democratization of journalism, which was closely connected with a desire to reach a wide circle of readers. In tandem with these transformations, journalistic genres evolved. In fact, analyzing the development of the review and the feuilleton, it is possible to observe certain regularities. On the one hand, certain most distinctive features of journalistic genres were reinforced. On the other hand, new forms, which stretched the boundaries of these genres, emerged.

The article discusses the image of a triumphal column in Norwid’s poems “Vendôme,” “Odpowiedź do Włoch (Fraszka),” and Szczesna. The inspiration to enquire about its function and symbolic power comes from Hegel’s lectures on aesthetics and the following passage from Epimenides: “The many columns […] many stray columns sought an edifice…” In Norwid’s thought, eternal glory is not meant for those who stand atop a triumphal column since such monuments can easily turn into dust, as confirmed by the fate of other monuments such as those of ancient leaders and Napoleon, but for the one who comes close to the “Pre-Eternal” upon physical death. The “power” is thus a value irrevocably tied to the triumphal column but has to rise to another dimension, other than that of physical power. This article recalls the idea of Paris as the “new Rome,” which was revived in the nineteenth century.

The article presents the research results about the influence of the colloquial lexis used in a column’s language on the image of the author of the text, as well as describing the mechanism of this influence. The material was collected during empirical research, when respondents pointed to traits of the column’s author after reading his/her text, and subsequently wrote the text fragments which in their opinion represented the indicated attributes. The exploratory discourse analysis of this corpus made it possible to identify words or sentences indicating the communication of traits like “humorous”, “ironic”, “interesting writer” through the use of colloquial lexis. This article is the analysis of the communicative mechanism of constructing these attributes.

The main research problem presented in this paper is the communication of one of many features of personal image – the trait ‘inquisitive’. The paper presents the results of the research which used quantitative methods and discourse analysis in order to examine what image can be created when somebody is talking/writing about various subjects but not about him/herself. The results of the research shows that it is possible to indicate six ways of communicating“inquisitiveness”: questions, declaration of interest, declaration of information searching, insight/conclusion, multifaceted issue, details.

The article presents the conclusions from a genological and linguistic analysis of selected columns from the “Piłka Nożna” weekly. The subject of the analysis were the columns written by Waldemar Lodziński, in which interesting references to genre convection of editorial were found. Four columns from years 1997–1998 were taken into consideration. In some cases, the observed genre adaptations are global (when they include the whole text structure), in others they are partial (when they relate only to selected parts of the text).

Artykuł zawiera wnioski z genologicznej i językoznawczej analizy wybranych felietonów z tygodnika „Piłka Nożna”. Przedmiotem analizy były felietony autorstwa Waldemara Lodzińskiego, w których odnaleziono interesujące nawiązania do konwencji gatunkowej editorialu. Uwzględniono cztery teksty z lat 1997–1988. W niektórych przypadkach zaobserwowane adaptacje gatunkowe mają charakter globalny (gdy obejmują całą strukturę gatunkową), a w innych cząstkowy (gdy odnoszą się jedynie do wybranych segmentów tekstu).

This article discusses the notion of communication success as dependent on the performative force and the intention of a given message, imposed on this message by the text-type (genre) categorization. Subject to analysis are media communications, represented by the categories of news and columns. To assess the effectiveness of the communication process actuated by the media, Grice’s cooperative principle is employed.

The Temple of Millions of Years of Thutmose III called Henket-ankh, located on the West Bank of Thebes, was probably an important and impressive monument of which very little remains nowadays. Previous work at the site, which started already in the first half of the nineteenth century, contributed greatly to the understanding and identification of this complex. The Spanish-Egyptian project that resumed the archaeological works at the site in 2008 improved our knowledge about the temple architectural and decorative features. This paper will focus on the characteristics and decoration of the vertical architectural elements with support function, that is to say columns and pillars, may have had in this temple. The fragments and blocks examined and the few architectural elements preserved in situ have allowed ascertaining of the existence in the temple of polygonal columns with sixteen sides, squared pillars, some of which were of Osiride type, and circular columns that were most likely crowned by Hathoric capitals.

Judge Arkadiusz Krupa appeared on the pages of The Voice of Law in the fifth volume – with his illustrations “The Blind Eye of Themis” which he now entices and interprets. This time we welcome the judge as a columnist. The first column is a commentary on current events, but it is also rooted in childhood memories of the author.

The aim of the paper is to fill up the gap in media studies research by characterizing selected columns written by three journalists (Janusz Atlas, Stefan Szczepłek, and Waldemar Lodziński) who published in the 1990s in a specialized weekly titled Piłka Nożna. Research methods: The paper contains conclusions from the linguistic analysis of the collected press material in terms of the presence of interesting genre adaptations in the texts. The study uses the method of linguistic genology with particular reference to Maria Wojtak’s original theory. Results and conclusions: The analysis of sports columns presents examples of original references to other press genres, utility texts, and forms characteristic of literature. However, it is examples of the duplication of the structure of press genres: profile and editorial, that come to the fore. Originality/cognitive value: Conclusions from the analysis of sports columns present their authors as intelligent, creative, and with high genre awareness.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba uzupełnienia luki w stanie badań medioznawczych poprzez scharakteryzowanie wybranych felietonów autorstwa trzech dziennikarzy publikujących w latach 90. XX wieku na łamach specjalistycznego tygodnika „Piłka Nożna” – Janusza Atlasa, Stefana Szczepłka i Waldemara Lodzińskiego. Metody badań: Artykuł zawiera wnioski z językoznawczej i genologicznej analizy zgromadzonego materiału prasowego dokonanej pod kątem obecności w tekstach interesujących adaptacji gatunkowych.
