The aim of this article is to present a review of a book edited by Adam Komisarof and Zhu Hua entitled Crossing Boundaries and Weaving Intercultural Work, Life, and Scholarship in Globalizing Universities which is a collection of articles from various research disciplines and approaches to the field of intercultural studies such as cross-cultural and acculturation psychology, communication, sociology, cultural anthropology, applied linguistics, language teaching, and multilingualism studies. The editors point out that auto-ethnography is the method employed for the purposes of the volume, as it is both researcher- and reader-friendly and allows the connection of personal experiences to broader socio-cultural contexts. As the editors promise, the book provides the reader with a variety of perspectives on intercultural communication and gives an overview of how intercultural academics combine their work, life, and scholarship, and how they juggle between various perspectives, cultures, and languages.

Powstająca obecnie nauka o komunikowaniu stwarza realną szansę integracji humanistyki i nauk społecznych.

The emerging science of media and communication offers a real opportunity to integrate the humanities and social sciences. Not only because the study of process of communication involves the many branches of sciences, but mostly because it introduces connective approach, combining analysis of the creative process with an analysis of the content of messages and the analysis of its social reception. It manifests itself – for example – in combing semiotics, psychology and sociology in media studies, which may result in research practice to overcome the weaknesses of basic sciences of culture: the research on the product in separation of its social reception. The study of communication as a discipline is emerging as a comprehensive (multidisciplinary) field combing idiographic and nomothetic and generalizing, that integrates the study of phenomena previously considered by the different disciplines.

The article deals with the advanced professional training for specialists in the communication field, which is considered one of the most relevant, current and practically-oriented areas of the Humanities disciplines. At the beginning of the 21st century we witness the rapid development of information-communication technology and its application both to the various spheres of society and everyday life. As a result, it causes popularity, intensive development and improvement of the professional training in communication field. The research was carried out on the basis of one of the oldest and most famous universities in Canada – McGill University. A major in Communication Studies allows students to be flexible and design their own curriculum with a help of scientific adviser in order to satisfy their learning needs and goals. It is therefore crucial to track major trends and tendencies. Experts in communication can choose from a huge variety of careers due to the ability to apply business, social and presentation skills and form professional relationships in the modern workplace. Communications sector is constantly updated. Thus, professional training in the communication field may vary considerably in content and approach used in the educational process, but all universities in Canada offer a practically-oriented training program in the field of communication, involving the usage of different approaches: critical, analytical, multicultural, systematic, moral-centric, andragogical, etc. The major in Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary Humanities professional training. The main goal is to offer multidisciplinary programs at the Master’s or Doctoral degree levels. For Communication Studies major, there is a wide range of career options that needed a Doctoral or Master’s degree, on the other hand, do not require any specific degree. The career options may include media, marketing, management, public relations, advertising, sports, medicine, jurisprudence, and many others. The Communication Studies departments consider internships as a beneficial supplement to students’ academic experience and encourage graduate students to undergo professional training abroad. The Internship Exchange Program has become an integral part of students’ professional education.

This article attempts to functionally reconstruct the views expressed by Marshall McLuhan in his works, both from an epistemological and the methodological perspective. The author argues that at the core of McLuhan’s theory, often regarded as a manifestation of “conservative” views, lies an individual form of cognitive and methodological skepticism. The skeptical attitude of the author of The Gutenberg Galaxy and Understanding Media means that his considerations, despite that fact that they date back to the 1960s, are not outdated and still attract great interest from contemporary media scholars.

The legacy of J. A. Comenius can be overlooked not only in the field of education, but also in many other areas of human activity and knowledge. His work was and still is th inspiration and motivation for the Department of Media Studies of the J. A. Comenius University in Prague, which develops the legacy of the thinker, philosopher, theologian, „teacher of nations“ in its study programs. It thus offers a „correction of human affairs“ in the current media „labyrinth“ as a starting point for the formation of today‘s man for a better tomorrow and for finding oneself in the „paradise of the heart“.
