Over the past years, the Internet has become a tool of communication among different people in the world. Due to the spread of the Internet, many researchers have focused their attention on the study of language use through the Internet. Code-switching is one of the sociolinguistic phenomena that have been observed in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The present paper explores the sociolinguistic phenomenon of code-switching in computer mediated communication by Jordanians. The study highlighted several English words that have been utilized for code-switching through online interaction. Furthermore, it studied the participants’ views about the role of Facebook in mixing Arabic with English. The methodology used in this study was descriptive, involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. An online questionnaire was shared on Facebook pages and groups. The sample included 181 participants; in addition, 35 interviews took place at home with relatives, with neighbors and in shops. The results revealed several perspectives about code-switching. Some participants mentioned that Facebook has led them to code-switch by using the most frequently switched words, such as; comment, like, group, share. Nevertheless, other participants mentioned that they prefer to use Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and avoid using any English words in online activities, which means that Facebook has no impact on their language. A higher percentage of participants agreed that Facebook plays a role in mixing Arabic with English.

The English language has featured markedly as a popular language of computer-mediated communication, and notably of Facebook posts, written not only by native or second language speakers, but also users of English as a foreign language. The aim of this paper is to investigate the frequency, form and function of English language Facebook profile updates of 110 (55 women and 55 men) users of English representing 41 European, Asian, African and Latin American countries belonging to the Expanding Circle. Approached from the point of view of the code choice as well as the users’ gender, and supported by an online survey data, the study analyses in detail the form of the updates in connection with gender preferences and identifies language contexts and functions users choose to express themselves in English as opposed to their native tongue, thereby demonstrating the role of English as a we-code in a social networking service.

This study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of two computer-based techniques, cooperative and individual learning, for teaching and learning oral skills - listening and speaking. It was also concerned with investigating students' attitude towards using CALL approach and techniques for teaching oral skills. The sample of the study consisted of four groups. The first one studied oral skills according to the cooperative computer technique, and the second group was taught via the individual computer technique. The third group studied according to the cooperative traditional technique, while the fourth group used the individual traditional technique. The findings of the study which is based on a limited number of participants showed that the cooperative computer technique was found to be a functional method for learning and teaching oral skills. The survey conducted in this study also indicated that students had a positive attitude towards using CALL approach and the cooperative computer technique. As a result, it is recommended to integrate CALL approach into the oral skill curriculum.

The article describes the opportunities and risks of Master – Student relation in the academic, online learning setting. The article begins with the analysis of Master – Student relation by presenting issues regarding the traditionally interpreted person of the master as well as by presenting the obstacles and expectations faced by students. Further on, advantages and disadvantages of computermediated communication (CMC) of the relation are discussed. Based on the research in CMC which, includes the hyper-personal model and the Media Naturalness Theory, the ambivalence of building an authentic, based on the ethical foundations, and a long-lasting interpersonal relationship, is shown. Finally, key risk areas are discussed, in particular reductionist online learning models implemented by the neoliberal agenda in university education, and doubts about the effectiveness of value-oriented education in a virtual environment.

This paper investigates and compares the functions of narrative passages in three computermediated health practices centering on advice-giving: (1) email counseling at a UK university, (2) online forums providing peer support for quitters of smoking, and (3) anti-smoking websites by UK governmental, commercial and charitable institutions. We found that the functions of the narrative passages are manifold and often overlapping. They range from seeking advice, giving advice, indicating/seeking agreement, supporting a claim, showing compliance with advice given to reporting on progress and success. In a second step, these insights were linked to how the narrative passages were used for identity construction and relational work. The results show that narratives are employed to create various identities, such as authentic advice-seekers, active self-helpers, successful quitters and advice-givers. Our comparison reveals that narrative functions utilized in all three practices exhibit nuanced differences due to medium factors and interactional goals of the practices. Finally, in these contexts of self-improvement, narratives document stability or transformation in the sense of clients’ improved health and smokers’ change to becoming non-smokers respectively.

In the article, the author presents the results of the study of netiquette, that is, a multi-faceted collection of rules and conventions governing computer-mediated communication. The aim of the study was to establish whether these conventions have changed with the advent of new modes of online interaction. The research was based on the categories proposed by Michel Marcoccia (1998), against which some of the early formulations of netiquette and their modern versions were compared. Such comparison allowed the author to identify the areas of change as well as draw some conclusions regarding their origins and directions.

This article offers a discussion of the grammatical, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of usernames from three online forums dealing with the 2015 European migrant crisis. The study reveals that in terms of their form and function the usernames originate from a wide field of verbal “source domains”, and that expressive and graphostylistic techniques are used to foreground parallels to official personal names, nicknames or pseudonyms.

Our contribution deals with computer-mediated communication, especially social networks. Our main task is to answer the question if sexuality in the context of new media continue to be perceived as a taboo. Based on examples of different types of selfies, we try to prove that the perception of sexuality in the context of computer mediated communication is constantly changing and ceases to be a taboo topic. Proof of this constatation is different types of selfies, which the author divides into three main categories: selfies revealing intimate parts of human body, selfies showing underwear and selfies that reveal the sexual act itself.
