W kolejnej (53) części Biblioteki Myśli Spółdzielczej przypominamy fragmenty referatu Józefa Jasińskiego pt. „Rola spółdzielczości w rozbudowie gospodarstwa narodowego w Polsce”, opublikowanego w formie broszury w 1937 r.

In the next (53rd) part of the Cooperative Thought Library we recall the fragments of Józef Jasiński's paper entitled "The role of the cooperative movement in the development of the national economy in Poland", published in the form of a brochure in 1937. The paper itself was prepared for the Congress of Delegates of the Consumer Cooperatives of the Republic of Poland Union, organized on June 14, 1936, which – at the request of Jasiński – adopted "Three-year development plan of consumer cooperatives for the years 1937 – 1939”.
This paper discusses Polish consumer cooperatives in terms of the embedded economy as understood by Karl Polanyi. The author compares today‟s “new” cooperatives, or informal groups of consumers that have been emerging in Poland since 2010, with the “old” consumer cooperative movement that existed between 1906 and 1939, as represented mainly by the “Społem” consumer cooperative union. Following Polanyi‟s understanding of the relationship between human economy and social institutions, I analyse reciprocity and redistribution as forms of economic integration in past and present cooperatives. Although the “new” cooperatives refer to the prewar cooperative traditions, their structure and economic operation differ vastly from the original model. I argue that the present structure of consumer cooperatives does not provide a base for symmetry and centricity – “supporting structures” for reciprocity and redistribution – although some of the new cooperatives do offer solutions for those deficits. This paper also discusses the nature of class barriers in the contemporary and historical consumer-cooperative movement, and relates this issue to Polanyian notions of countermovement and class interest.
W kolejnej (44) części Biblioteki Myśli Spółdzielczej przypominamy fragmenty artykułu prof. Bernarda Lavergne'a, francuskiego ekonomisty, twórczego kontynuatora socjalizmu chrześcijańskiego Szkoły w Nimes i Charlesa Gide'a, Pierwszeństwo spożywcy. Odnowienie nauk społecznych i systemu ekonomicznego dzięki pojęciu spożywcy, w przekładzie B. Przegalińskiego, Warszawa 1937.

In the next (44th) part of the Cooperative Thought Library, we are reminded of fragments of Bernard Lavergne's (French economist, creative continuator of Christian socialism of Nimes School and Charles Gide) article: The Priority of the consumer. Renewal of social sciences and the economic system through the concept of the consumer, translated by B. Przegalinski, Warsaw 1937. The author constructs the image of the social system (i.e. cooperative society) – which differs both from capitalism and socialism – whose primary purpose is to meet human needs. This system is characterized by the fact that the institutions operating in trade, production and finance are voluntary associations, cooperatives and, at the same time, belong to the recipients of their services, therefore, to consumers.
