The sense of the word can be explored in the context, which is now common knownledge. In this article we intend to make a brief review of some linguistic and philosophical approaches emphasizing the role of environment in the meaning of a lexical unit (F. de Saussure, N. A. Chomsky, G. Frege, Z . Harris, M. Gross, G. Gross). Then, we make an attempt to determine how the context of use brings out the exact meaning, which thus affects its translation, how the invariant meaning is activated in the context and how current dictionaries propose to describe this type of data. We also focus on the analysis based on the object oriented approaches which can take into account the linguistic information often overlooked in language dictionaries. The analysis is based on the example of the verb quitter FR/quitar ES.
The aim of studying the indirect insult, based on the analysis of the tropes, is double. We shall, on one hand, try to show that verbal abuse emanates not only from the use of the forbidden expressions, but also relations between the words from which the sense can be diverted. On the other hand, opting for a corpus established by statements of spontaneous French and Tunisian dialect, we shall try to see if the argumentative strategies adopted by speakers of tongues and different cultures are the same. For that purpose, we are going to rely on the cognitive pragmatics.

Many linguists have emphasised the difficulties in attempting to define what a word is. The notion differs according to the language under study and it even proves irrelevant for a certain number of languages. Although ‘word’ has not quite ceased to be used for convenience with a fuzzy extension, it is replaced by metalinguistic terms coined to fit the units specific to lexicology, semantics or terminology. There remains the central question of the nature and boundaries of these units and of their relation with a linguistic system, on the one hand, and with the texts in which they occur, on the other. Consideration given to the theoretical framework of terminology leads to a critical viewpoint on practices that rest on logical principles incompatible with a context sensitive approach to lexical semantics even in a technical field such as the art of puppetry dealt with here. A language for specific purposes is not a linguistic sub-system since any text, oral or written, originates in a particular social situation manifested by its discourse and genre. Texts are not strings of words. Text semantics provides a textual approach to the lexicon in which the entries in a semantic class are selected contextually thus partaking of both texts and language as a system.
The article aims to investigate the most accurate way to translate Latin phrase privilegium odiosum into Polish. The most popular translation « przywilej niekorzystny » can be regarded as awkward. On the grounds of legal and literary Roman sources the etymology of word privilegium was taken into consideration and the meaning of this word can be defined as a rule granted to an individual or to a restricted group, not always profitable for them. The Author takes into consideration the meaning of phrase in question in old and contemporary sources and literature of canon law, examples of such privileges were also given. In the last part of the article the Author points out how important is to determine the proper meaning of Latin phrases for the most proper translation, and suggests such translation of phrase privilegium odiosum into Polish.

This article is an attempt to describe the reciprocal influence of Matéi Visniec’s life and work. Based on Dominique Maingueneau’s theory of literary context and the paratopia related to it, we try to go beyond the socio-political context of Romania at the relevant time, which undoubtedly influenced the then-young writer’s perception of the world. We are, however, more interested in Visniec’s specific attitude, reflected in his work, of facing the regime and censorship that forbade the publication and exhibition of his plays and the resulting paratopia. In line with Maingueneau’s notion of bio/graphie, we try to show that Visniec’s work both reflects his life experiences and shapes his life.

This study is based on the principles of realistic translatology, i.e., the observation of the artifacts of translation practice as a means of revealing the components and parameters of their production. The specificity of proper names constitutes the barrier to their translation in the classical sense of the term, but their semantic potentiality can, naturally or within the context of literary or pragmatic creations, generate modes of translation ranging from literalism to recreation, not to mention those related to time period and stylistic norms. In other words, the epistemology of proper names constitutes itself within the frame of a semiotic approach integrating the functions of the sign within its social context of production and the function it comes to bear within texts.
In this paper we propose a modeling of contextual information around a terminological unit, for the needs of a scientific writing aid tool in the biomedical field. We focus more specifically on the modeling of significant phraseic contexts that we formalize as semantically characterized argument patterns. This modeling is based on a large corpus of biomedical scientific articles and relay on semantic types specified in a domain ontology, Unified Medical Language System.

The present paper makes reference to its author’s work The Dynamics of Language (1976) and presents three basic and indispensable cate-gories for a theory and description of language, namely form, significa-tion, and location, with special emphasis on the last two. After a short introduction, the following problems are considered: (1) language theory and semantics, (2) language sign and the dichot-omy significans : significatum, (3) (morpho)semanteme and the trichot-omy: form, signification, location, (4) form, signification, and location in the process of encoding and decoding, (5) context and the contex-tual theory of meaning according to J. R. Firth, (6) the influence of context and speech situation on the signification of the el-ement of text. The conclusion (7) summarizes the presentation of the trichoto-my of the defining categories for the (morpho)semanteme, i.e. form, signification, and location, and of their role in the description of lan-guage and of the process of verbal communication. It also draws at-tention to the relation that holds between context in the broad sense and location in the sense defined in the paper and shows the ad-vantages following from the introduction of the latter concept into the theory and description of language.

The Dynamics of Lan-guage (1976) i omawia trzy podstawowe i niezbędne kategorie teorii i opisu języka, a mianowicie formę, sygnifikację i lokację, ze szczegól-nym uwzględnieniem tych dwu ostatnich. Po krótkim wstępie rozwa-żane są następujące zagadnienia: (1) teoria języka a semantyka, (2) znak językowy i dychotomia significans : significatum, (3) (mor-fo)semantem i trychotomia: forma, sygnifikacja, lokacja, (4) forma, sygnifikacja i lokacja w procesie kodowania i dekodowania, (5) kon-tekst i kontekstualna teoria znaczenia według J. R. Firtha, (6) wpływ kontekstu i konsytuacji na sygnifikację elementu tekstu. Zakończenie (7) podsumowuje prezentację trychotomii kategorii definicyjnych (morfo)semantemu, czyli formy, sygnifikacji i lokacji i ich roli w opisie języ-ka i procesu komunikacji werbalnej. Zwraca też uwagę na stosunek zachodzący pomiędzy kontekstem w sensie szerokim a lokacją w ujęciu zdefiniowanym w artykule oraz podaje korzyści wynikające z wprowadzenia tego ostatniego pojęcia do teorii i opisu języka.
