On the Polish market for individual life insurance policies there is a significant number of critical illness contracts. These contracts are characterized by complexity, as their competitiveness is affected by at least a dozen features, which might cause difficulties comparing them and then finally selecting the most attractive offer. The article focuses on the main quality features characterizing the additional critical illness contracts included in the fifth chapter of the first group of individual insurance. These features can be considered as criteria affecting the competitiveness of a given supplementary agreement. In order to present them, a comparative analysis of selected life insurance companies’ offers was done. In addition, in a separate part of the article, we compared some critical illness contracts in terms of premium, which is the criterion of special importance from the point of view of the client’s decision concerning the purchase.

Artykuł przedstawia rozwiązania stosowane na rynkach ubezpieczeń w wybranych krajach na świecie, w kontekście doprecyzowania definicji chorób w ubezpieczeniu na wypadek poważnego zachorowania. Ocenie poddano działania podjęte w Wielkiej Brytanii, Singapurze i RPA w celu wprowadzenie standaryzacji warunków ubezpieczenia. Wybór krajów do analizy nie jest przypadkowy. RPA to „państwo pochodzenia” ubezpieczenia poważnego zachorowania. Wyprowadzone wnioski odniesiono do polskich realiów i zaproponowano możliwe do wprowadzenia w przyszłości rozwiązania.

The paper presents solutions available on insurance markets of selected countries of the world in the context of specifying the definition of illnesses used in critical illness covers. The author assessed the measures taken in the United Kingdom, Singapore and South Africa with the aim of introducing standardised terms and conditions of insurance. The selection of the analysed countries was not random. South Africa is the country where critical illness cover came into being. Singapore is the first country in the world that started to standardise the definition of illnesses and the United Kingdom has the biggest market for critical illness covers measured by a written premium. The paper discusses not only the reasons for introducing standardised terms and conditions of insurance but also possible negative consequences this may bring about. The conclusions drawn were juxtaposed with Polish realities. In addition, solutions were proposed with potential for introduction in the future.
