Professor Piotr Piotrowski passed away on 3rd May 2015. Above all, he was a world-class art historian, an author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles, a university lecturer, an intellectual engaged in public debates, and an academic teacher shaping the scientific attitudes of the most prominent art historians from the middle and younger generations in Poland and abroad. His personal achievement also included important achievements in the fields of museum studies and museology which place him among the most original Polish museum professionals at the turn of the 21st century. This memory is mainly devoted to the museum activity of Piotr Piotrowski. It recalls his achievements as a curator in the Gallery of Contemporary Art of the National Museum in Poznań, and highlights the intellectual legacy of his achievements in museology in the concept of the „critical museum” and the belief in the importance of the institution of the museum in public debate.

A critical assessment of the contemporary state of the new Silesian Museum in Katowice has been presented. In the Author’s view, the institution has currently reached an organizational crisis resulting from the process of losing its genuine idea rooted in its new seat and from the gradual blurring of the concept of its new mission. The reflections presented in the paper are based on data analysis: the official documents produced by the Silesian Museum in Katowice, media materials which comment on its activity, as well as on the participant observation from the perspective of an insider: of the Silesian community and of an institution’s academic affiliate. The ambitious and modern vision of the new Silesian Museum basing on the rehabilitation of the post-industrial area of the former ‘Katowice’ Coal Mine constitutes a chance to enjoy the ‘second life’ by the post-mining sites. The Katowice institution undertook the mission of creating space for the dialogue with the past and accomplishments of the present in order to better know Silesia, Poland, and Europe. Regrettably, inept actions of the decision-makers, chaos related to the position of the Museum’s Director, failed attempts to merge the Museum with the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, lack of understanding for the supranational, universal message related to the region’s history, have led to losing the genuine idea and blurring of the selected mission. The crisis that the Silesian Museum has been suffering is politically underpinned, and results from the use of museum institutions instrumentally by the authorities in order to fulfill their short-term goals. The decision makers of the Silesian Museum will in the near future have to choose between two operating formulas: they can either follow the conservative way, implying stagnation and becoming a closed ‘shrine-like museum’, or aspire to be a venue for the Silesian dialogue, turning into an open ‘museum-forum’.

The museum definition is of systemic importance for ICOM, since it demarcates the area of activity of this international non-governmental organization grouping museum curators. The answer to the question whether the new museum definition presented at the ICOM General Conference in Kyoto on 1–7 September 2019 reveal a political undertone is sought. The majority of the attendees did not support the put-forth proposal, opting to postpone the vote on its acceptance. What I mean by the ‘political undertone of the new museum definition’ is that the definiens takes into account the fact that museums are institutions tangled up in exerting power and applying symbolic violence. According to the Kyoto definition museums are identified with critical museums, treated as space for public debate directed at the future. This vision did not convince the majority, since it excluded many institutions until now regarded to be museums from the museum category. As such, the Kyoto definition turned out not to be a definition, but a political manifesto of a group of museum curators. Additionally, not being coherent, it proved useless for phrasing legislative acts.

The study deals with the issue of nationalism and its emphasis on national identities, which have occupied a specific position in museums since the 19th century. Nationalism understands the study as a modern phenomenon, which was created by specific structural conditions, functions and changes connected with the advent of modernity. It is precisely the conditions for the emergence of nationalism that the study pays attention to, and through the analysis of Ernst Gellner's theory it seeks to define the main attributes from which the emergence and persistence of nationalism derive. To this end, the study will present the basic characteristics of a traditional society in which there were no suitable conditions for the existence of nationalism, and subsequently show how these conditions were born by the transition of society from traditional to modern. With regard to the theme of nationalism, the social change that took place and the basic characteristics of modern society, which eventually created the breeding ground for the emergence and existence of nationalism, will be presented. The study then applies the issue of nationalism to museums. The study will outline how museums have transformed in the established modern society and what role nationalism has played in them. Finally, the study briefly reflects on the role that nationalism can play in museums today, viz. it will show which elements constructing national identity can potentially appear most in museums.
