I perceive the art criticism as the philosophical reflection on art. It is possible to ask question about the sense of art only on the basis of philosophy including, among others, peronalism. In this text, the concept of Tymon Terlecki’s personalistic criticism based on Emmanuel Mounier’s philosophy is analyzed to assess the usefulness of its main assumptions and design a model of the contemporary artistic critic. The analysis of such concepts as person, personal movement, freedom, transcendence, symbol and view leads to the conclusion that a critic personalist is not supposed to be satisfied only with deciphering the sense of art. However, s/he is to extend the scope of her/his reflection with the context of the work’s potential impact on an artist and a viewer.

This research study deals with an area which has largely escaped the attention of researchers so far, i.e. linguistic equivalence and the limits to the translatability of Gombrowicz’s convoluted style, an effective deterrent for other translators. This article investigates the English and Italian translations of various works of Gombrowicz. Particular attention must be paid to the way in which translators have rendered the Polish original, and above all to the vocabulary, phrasing and structure of the language used by Gombrowicz in the Italian and English languages.

The article characterizes seven sources of the criticism of the policy of multiculturalism in the context of the recently voiced opinions of the western European political leaders. The described sources of criticism are: the financial crisis and the need to reduce the social spending, the pessimistic visions of the future of the European culture, the globalization, the increasing number of the immigrants and their descendants, understanding the multiculturalism as an unification rather than co-existence of different cultures, the decreasing impact of the historical and political events that were an inspiration to the politics of multiculturalism and finally the still high unemployment rate among the immigrants and their descendants.

The objective of this article is to present a critical analysis of selected elements of Nazi legacy in the Federal Republic of Germany (Deutsche Bundesrepublik, BRD). The remnants of the Nazi system have been tolerated, and even sheltered by the authorities of West Germany in almost all aspects of life. A question arises, then, about the effectiveness of the denazification after the Second World War and about a change in mentality in German society, as it should be noted that some elements of Nazi legacy were abandoned only in the 21st century, and therefore the Federal Republic of Germany has not managed to fully make reparations to the victims of Nazism. This article also discusses the fact that in a post-totalitarian state it is extremely difficult to find ‘pristine’ biographies, considering the number of former members of NSDAP who filled important offices in the BRD.

Following their meeting in Iena in July 1794, Goethe and Schiller developed a strong friendship and kept up intense correspondence until Schiller’s premature death in 1805. This exchange of letters opens up the space for a critical debate and confers upon the letter the status of a laboratory for artistic and literary creation. The correspondence also encodes one of the more original aspects of the late 18th- to early 19th-century thought: a critique of dualism which leads to the perspective of a reconciliation between science and literature, fields of thought hitherto kept separate. Articulating rather than opposing these fields, Goethe and Schiller conceive of the possibility of holding a scientific discourse on literature.

By analysing the meaning and the use of terms criticism and review criticizing and reviewing theauthor discusses similarities and di erences between the notions mentioned in the title. Starting with the sense of the verb to criticize the emphasis is placed on the di erence between lite- rary criticism and criticizing as the negatively assessing speech act. Taking into account linguistic means used in critical texts, the author discusses types of review and their constitutive features, and de nes reviewing as linguistic activity. An attempt is also made at answering the question whether considering the critic and criticisms to be dead is not premature.

Dominique Fernandez is the author of a method of analysis for artists and their works that he calls “psychobiography”. It establishes parallels between the analysis of works and events in the life of an artist, insisting on the identification of a childhood trauma that left an indelible mark on the style of the artist. In this article we show how he applies this method in his biographical novels: La course à l’abîme, Tribunal d’honneur and Dans la main de l’ange. We analyze the way in which biographemes are reconstituted in order to give a coherent vision of the biographee. We emphasize the thin line that separates reality from fiction, or biography from novel.

The article presents the category of axiological confusion understood as an important trait of reality that can be experimentally experienced by a modern man. The man is losing the ability not only to appropriately grasp one’s own human nature and the essence of the moral good, but also the ability of cognitive opening oneself to the intelligibility of being. A modern homo sapiens neutralises the need to seek the truth. After all, the truth ceases to be both a transcendental property of being and a superior value that is the very foundation of a rational discourse on the philosophical imponderabilia.

Criticism is nowadays broadly defined firstly, as a cognitive attitude consisting in investigation of rightness of one’s beliefs and considering true only those statements which are substantiated. Secondly, it is a cognitive attitude opposed to dogmatism (e.g. skepticism understood not as negative dogmatism but as zeteticism and ephecticism), which allows the possibility of changing one’s opinion as a result of occurrence of new facts or theories. Cosmological-ontological interpretation of early Greek philosophy, which is currently dominant, may be complemented (or even overcome) by a critical one. The article presents elements of Xenophanes’ philosophy (especially Xenophanes’ theological fragments) in the light of the problem concerning the historical origins of philosophical criticism. In this paper I try to recognize Xenophanes’ theological fragments not as a positive theology, but rather as an attempt to construct a dialectical metaphor (like in case of Gadamer’s interpretations of Plato’s polis), which has emphasized the epistemological assumptions of his philosophy.

The aim of the paper is to provide an interpretation of Schopenhauer’s criticism of Kantian philosophy in its three pivotal areas: the notion of metaphysics, the basics of epistemology and ethical theory. The study shows the grounding of this criticism in the rehabilitation of the world in its immediate givenness. The next point of discussion is an analogy of Schopenhauer’s ethics in relation to Kant, its inner contradiction related to the concepts of compassion and resignation, as well as their inspiring character.

Stať interpretuje hlavní body Schopenhauerovy kritiky Kantovy filosofie: koncept metafyziky, východiska teorie poznání a rozvrh etiky.

The article presents a criticism of the philosophy of Józef Bańka (1934-2019) and five charges against it concern: the idea of recentivism, the idea of simple-mindedness, a complicated language, excessive criticism of technical civilization and philosophy of civilizations. This does not mean that this philosophy is worthless, but only that, like any philosophy, it has weaknesses.

There is a broadly shared belief among historians according to which the ideas of Xenophanes of Colophon (and especially fragment B 18 in Diels Kranz) should be understood as the earliest expression of the idea of progress, a belief in possibility of discovering possibilities of betterment. On the other hand, Hesiod’s story of five generations is usually recognized as a model example of quite the opposite thesis, stressing regress, the fall of humanity. This contradiction is highlighted by the fact that Xenophanes criticises the views on gods from Homer’s and Hesiod’s writings. In this paper I analyse Works and Days by Hesiod as well as remaining fragments of Xenophon’s writings. It seems that Hesiod is first of all interested in diagnosis of the sources of human misery and suffering, and not in describing some historical process of degradation of man. Contrary to this, Xenophanes develops a philosophical framework mostly consisting of epistemological reflection that calls for rejection of the hubris of reason which coincides with hasty and dogmatic judgement of both gods and the world itself. The two thinkers agree that the human fortune, however dependent on gods-established necessity, lays to a degree in man’s own hands thanks to humbleness, piety and wisdom. Thus, their standpoints are not contradictory in historical philosophical perspective, quite the opposite, they agree in belief in progress, in betterment.

Corporate social responsibility is becoming more and more popular all over the world. It is promoted by governments and transnational organizations. Nevertheless, since its establishment, it has gained a large group of enemies and still meets with a wave of criticism from different sides, beggining from economists, standing on the position that the purpose of business is only to generate income, through philosophers, who see in CSR a new tool for social enslavement, ending at sociologists, who see an element of corporate management and modern control technology in it. The article presents the most important arguments against corporate social responsibility. It also engages in a polemic against opponents of this concept. However, the starting point is the theory of stakeholders, considered by many as the framework of CSR.

The author carries out a summary of the Politics and Society, a scientific journal which has existed for ten years. The person of Prof. Henryk Cimek is called because his organizational contribution to the political science at the Univeristy of Rzeszów should be appreciated. Prof. Cimek was the founder of both Department of Politology and the Politics and Society. The main part of the text discusses the features of the journal and its scientific contribution. A notable asset is articles based on original research undertaken by both young and experienced scholars. Publishing various kinds of scientific texts also deserves attention. Because the state of political science in Poland is the author’s primary concern, he supports the editors’ effort to bring closer its distinguished co-founders and even to archive the development of the discipline. The text contains important suggestions for younger academics who publish in the Politics and Society. At the end the author appeals for critical considerations to improve the quality of the journal in another ten-year period.

The article is devoted to reception of Austrian literature before the Second World War in Wiadomości Literackie (Literary News). It was the most popular letter, whose aim was to educate society, and popularize foreign literature and culture. The literature that was most often promoted was French literature, but also German-speaking authors (cited in the article) were discussed. Austrian literature was not treated as distinct from German literature during that time but nontheless, the articles presents artists, of Austrian origin: Joseph Roth, Stefan Zweig, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler, Odon von Horváth, Franz Werfel and others. The article examines interviews with these writers as well as reviews their books and other texts which appeared in Wiadomości Literackie.

The article introduces the issue of a crisis of literary criticism in Poland in the 20th and 21st centuries. The crisis is linked to the spheres of culture described by the term literacy (or cultural literacy). One of the reasons for the crisis is the series of ruptures in the tradition of literary criticism. In order to overcome this crisis, it is crucial to relate the ruptured threads of narration on literary criticism. The Krakow school of literary criticism serves here as an example of a rupture between the present and the tradition (or heritage). Another problem analysed in the text is that of establishing a tradition and a school of thought. By verifying some of the elements of the discourse on literary criticism (e.g. Masters, ruptures, traces, melancholic position), some possibilities for overcoming the crisis are being considered.

Compiling special dictionaries in Ukraine and Russia has its own history, national specifics, significant achievements and groundworks. Terminological dictionaries play an important role – they preserve and transmit the scientific terminology fund from generation to generation, which necessitates a critical examination of each specific publication. Terminographic criticism is an integral, interdisciplinary direction which is formed simultaneously on the basis of scientific criticism and scientific communication combining their features. As a result of the study, it was established that modern Ukrainian and Russian critics in their reviews adhere to the same principles to examine terminological dictionaries: the intention to comprehensively analyse, first of all, definition and translation publications as well as reference dictionaries, regarding the representation of their mega-, macro- and microstructure parameters; determining the national and linguacultural values of branch dictionaries. The potential importance of the practical application of the results lies in improving the theoretical and methodological principles and foundations of compiling terminological dictionaries, as well as their use in the development of new models of special publications, in particular dictionaries of a new type, which will comprehensively present the terminology of a certain field of science.
