This article introduces so-called honour crimes (sometimes termed honour based violence), which tends to occur within Islamic communities located within ‘host’ countries in Europe. It is a very specific type of crime, which takes place in the family setting in Muslim families, and is in direct contradiction with the democratic values and legal systems of Western states. The aim of this paper is to introduce the issue and illustrate it in relation to selected cases. It offers both an evaluative and descriptive stance.

Acculturation is often addressed as a challenging situation accompanied by acculturation stress, which an individual experiences when relocating to a different cultural environment. In such a situation, the importance of personal relationships and social networks increases. To better understand the psychological aspects of acculturation, it is needed to aim at the concept of family. Based on a critical review of current research, a new family acculturation model is presented. A family defines the context, in which acculturation takes place, whereas it is the subject to accculturation and experiences the process as an actor at the same time. A family attends the acculturation in a particular set up, reacts to newly emerging needs and requierements, chooses an acculturation strategy, and changes in reaction to the relationship dynamics of family members.

O akulturaci se často mluví jako o zvládání náročné sitauce, kterou provází tzv. akulturační stres, jejž zažívá jedinec při změně kulturního prostředí. V takovýchto případech roste význam osobních vztahů a sociálních sítí. Pro lepší uchopení psychologických procesů, které se odehrávají na pozadí akulturace, je třeba se zaměřit na oblast rodiny. Rodina spoluvytváří podmínky, za jakých proces akulturace probíhá, a stejně tak je i předmětem samotné akulturace a součástí procesu jako aktivní článek. Do akulturace rodina vstupuje za specifických podmínek, reaguje na nově vznikající potřeby a požadavky, volí si akulturační strategii a v reakci na dynamiku vztahů mezi jednotlivými členy v průběhu procesu prochází změnou.

Acculturation processes as complex and multidimensional are analyzed towards different domains, different fields in which both cultures change e.g. political, work, economic, family, social, religion… In all those fields it is important to search for solutions helping to incorporate immigrants in their new societies and allow effective coexistence between majorities and minorities. To analyze post-Brexit concerns of such nature among Polish immigrants, Psychologists from Polish University Abroad in London (PUNO) designed a research program: “Poles in Britain during Brexit.”

Artykuł dotyczy skutków brytyjskiej decyzji o odłączeniu się od UE. Temat ujęto z punktu widzenia psychologii międzykulturowej, opisując Brexit w kontekście wiedzy na temat mechanizmów psychologicznych, stojących za tak ekstremalnym przypadkiem swoistej strategii „budowania” stosunków międzykulturowych. Celem opracowania jest wskazanie na ważny moment ewolucji procesów akulturacyjnych we współczesnej Europie. Analizujemy przyczyny wyboru podjętego w Wlk. Brytanii oraz czynniki kolejnego wyboru: między odejściem a pozostaniem Polskich emigrantów i rodzin emigracyjnych w Wielkiej Brytanii. Tekst ma formę przeglądową, z odwołaniem do badań własnych.

Punktem wyjścia dla sformułowanych uwag w moim wystąpieniu jest artykuł Katarzyny Sikory, otwierający dyskusję na tematy etyczne związane z zawodem psychologa. Sam artykuł jest, w mojej ocenie, solidnym przedstawieniem tej problematyki na łamach kodeksów zarówno międzynarodowych, jak i krajowych. Moje uwagi na tym tle dotyczą sytuacji w Polsce. Charakteryzują ją jako daleko posuniętą dezintegrację polskich psychologów, spowodowaną słabością Polskiego Towarzystwa Psychologicznego (PTP) oraz nieuwzględnianiem kulturowego zakotwiczenia większości oddziaływań stosowanych w pracy psychologów. Ta druga uwaga dotyczy zarówno nieuwzględniania kulturowej odmienności odbiorców, jak i kulturowego zakotwiczenia importowanych do kraju produktów.

The point of departure for the remarks made in my text is Katarzyna Sikorska's paper, opening a debate on ethical issues involved in the profession of psychologist. The paper itself is, in my opinion, a solid presentation of these issues as they appear in international and Polish codes. Against this backdrop, my remarks concern the situation in Poland. They describe this situation as advanced disintegration of the community of Polish psychologists caused by the weakness of Polish Psychological Association (PTP) and by the failure to take into account the cultural rootedness of most treatments used in psychologists' work. The latter remark refers to the failure to take into account both the cultural identity of clients and the cultural rootedness of products imported into the country.

This article presents the cultural factors which contribute to understanding psychological health and pathology. The definitions of understanding psychological health and ways of approaching treatment were analysed, with particular emphasis on the role of religion. Understanding health and pathology was analysed from the perspective of the distinction between illness and disease. Four academic disciplines tackling this topic – psychology of religion, cultural psychology, indigenous psychology and clinical psychology – were presented as specific ways of approaching a conceptualisation of the above problems.
