The garden presents itself as an area consciously created by the human being. Its representation is usually actualized in opposition both to what is natural and to what is artificial (e.g. to a city). Over many years now, the garden has been been considered to be a “cultural fossil”, and as such, an object of importance for literary critics, film critics, art historians, musicologists etc., and an anthropological phenomenon, which is demonstrated by contemporary juxtapositions of aesthetics with environmental science, pace Gernot Böhme, or the transcultural aesthetics promoted by Wolfgang Welsch). At this stage, we are very close to full understanding of the phenomenon of garden-topos, as well as the numerous garden metaphors. In Zbigniew Rybczyński’s film Orkiestra there are several areas of author’s interest in the garden created and filmed on a theatrical stage. The garden as a space of life-renewal, symbol of birth and metaphysical rebirth, a renewed experience of fulness. The garden as a space of ordered life, positive energy, areas of joy liberation, a synonym of goodness and ideals. Finally, as the symbol of return to creation, beauty, to the first beginning, to civilized and tame nature.
The main aim of the paper is to refine and highlight one of the topics of this book, which is the overlap of several different understandings of cultural participation: 1) based on cultural theories and traditional, continental cultural studies discourses, where participation was usually understood as acontribution of the subject to the collective systems of beliefs; 2) based on the “critical theories” of culture, British cultural studies, political philosophy and critique or art theory and practice, where the term participation is often used to explain agrassroot, bottom-up activity, civic participation and acontribution of individuals and groups to public domain, 3) based on the political philosophy and the political practice, 4) based on contemporary theory and critique of art practices, empirical social research of cultural participation. All of these understandings have a lot in common, they are negotiable as well. What differentiates them, possibly, is the concept of social/cultural change which they involve. However, the concept of relation between action, knowledge and beliefs which they assume is far more important. The theoretical perspective, which in my opinion can serve as a way to negotiate these approaches, is modern philosophy of praxis and contemporary theories of social practice. I discuss whether there is apossibility to integrate these discourses in the model of activist research for Polish cultural studies in the context of increasingly intensifying debates around the performativity of cultural research and the need to “came back to the rough ground” of social practice.
The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).

Our postmodern surrounding is forcing scientists to look for unconventional research methods that go beyond the commonly used measuring tools. The author presents possibilities of two dif¬ferent methods, which are derived from one methodological branch—ethnography, more pre¬cisely, one of the most typical methods of the scientific tradition which is observation. These are ‘mystery shopping’ and ‘shadowing.’ Starting with the primary role of observation in research and in science generally, the author shows the most important characteristics of both methods— their advantages and difficulties they brings. Researches done by “Regional Cultural Obser¬vatory” Adam Mickiewicz’s University show their practical application and the need to find new research tools that are designed to improve activity of cultural institutions. This publication is an attempt to reflect on whether or not to include ‘mystery shopping’ and ‘shadowing’ to the range of methods by examining local cultural and education leaders improving the quality of service in the institutions involved in the field of culture? Presented (relatively new) methods, based on different types of scientific observation, seem to be interesting, since using of their advantages in the study of culture can bring quaint results. Dynamically changing environment forces the constant search for new and effective methods and comprehensive data demonstrating a wide field of influence of different factors. These two methods open up great opportunities to generate them, and consequently enhance research in the field of culture.

Otaczająca nas ponowoczesna rzeczywistość zmusza badaczy kultury do poszukiwania nie-konwencjonalnych metod badawczych, wykraczających poza ramy powszechnie stosowanych, do tej pory, narzędzi pomiaru. Dynamiczne zmieniające się otoczenie wymusza bowiem nieustanne poszu¬kiwania nowych, skutecznych metod i całościowych danych, ukazujących szerokie pole oddziaływania różnorodnych czynników. Opisane dwie metody otwierają duże możliwości ich pozyskania i w konsekwencji wzbogacania badań w obszarze kultury.
Birthday is the custom having its roots in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, as well as being widespread in Protestant countries. This tradition has been very popular in Poland for years. The author notices that celebrating birthdays used to be reserved for children only, whereas nowadays it is becoming more and more popular among adults. The sign of its popularity is the flowering of literature in the 21st century – especially books addressed to the youngest, guides or collections of occasional poems. However, there is still a lack of valuable books on that matter for young people. Taking into consideration literature and film and considering distinction between young and adult addressees the author of this outline presents a few other remarkable phenomena.

The main thesis of the article is the conviction that the efficiency of Polish teachers’ influence on their students depends on several factors, including the following: restoring the readers’ commitment by making literature classes more attractive, enriching teaching styles during Polish classes, introducing new theoretical literary ideas into the school practice and creating a dictionary of intersemiotic poetics. The author presents the state of readership in Poland as a starting point for finding the reasons for the crisis of Polish teaching at school. Moreover, he shows various social, cultural and civilisational contexts which have changed the position of the Polish language classes in the hierarchy of importance of school subjects. However, the main issue here is the problem of the effective use of various theoretical literary interpretations in order to increase the attractiveness of reading the books from the obligatory reading list, as well as other cultural texts. It seems particularly relevant to convince teachers of the importance of their theoretical and methodological competences, allowing for the new styles of reading in the pedagogical practice. The article outlines selected directions of research and their possible pedagogical applicability. It also emphasises that in the “No Reading Age” it is essential to look for the forms which may facilitate the comprehension of belles-lettres and create a universal language of terms to describe the nature of numerous artistic phenomena (prose, poetry, films, paintings, etc.). Moreover, the article presents the advantages of new core curriculum, in which textocentrism becomes the main didactic directive.

Głównym zagadnieniem jest tu jednak problem efektywnego wykorzystania różnego rodzaju wykładni teoretycznoliterackich do podnoszenia atrakcyjności czytania lektur i innych tekstów kultury.
