During the first theatre seasons of the nineties, German drama focused on the analysis of the social traumas following the fall of the Berlin Wall, German reunification and perestroika. However, it soon became apparent that the theatre was not able to keep pace with the political changes of the times, and it failed to do justice to their internal complications and discrepancies. The fascination with the new dramatic scenic forms originating in Germany, which could be observed in Poland in the second half of the nineties, had nothing to do with the so-called reunification drama. It more likely resulted from its fiasco and the adoption of new aesthetics and communication methods. The strengthening relation of the German and Polish theatre, i.e. joint festivals, inspired those Polish artists who sought for a new scenic language and transposed the German theatre experience into their own plays in a creative way. The scale of this movement was so extensive that it could be described as a kind of phenomenon in modern art and in relations between Poland and Germany.

Elfriede Jelinek is recently one of the most frequently staged German-speaking authors in Poland, although theater artists have been taking to this dramaturgy for quite a long time. The aim of the article is to look at the process of acquiring Jelinek's writting by Polish theater directors, using a concept of culture transfers. Discussing the winding road of the Austrian writer to Polish scenes, I point out intermediaries (translators, directors) who became her ambassadors in Poland, and I also discuss the adaptation processes conducive conditions. Not without significance are the aesthetic changes in Polish theater, stimulated from the West for the last twenty years, which gave Polish artists tools to tackle this difficult, experimental and very sensual drama

Elfriede Jelinek jest obecnie jednym z częściej wystawianych w Polsce niemieckojęzycznych autorów, chociaż twórcy teatralni dość długo przekonywali się do tej dramaturgii. Celem artykułu jest przyjrzenie się procesowi przyswajania twórczości Jelinek przez polski teatr, przy wykorzystaniu poręcznej w tym przypadku koncepcji transferów kultury. Omawiając krętą drogę austriackiej pisarki na krajowe sceny, wskazuję pośredników (tłumaczy, reżyserów), którzy w pewnym sensie stali się jej ambasadorami w Polsce, a także omawiam warunki sprzyjające procesom adaptacyjnym. Nie bez znaczenia są przemiany estetyczne w polskim teatrze, w ostatnim dwudziestoleciu stymulowane z Zachodu, które dały narzędzia polskim artystom do zmierzenia się z tą niełatwą, eksperymentalną i bardzo sensualną dramaturgią.

The paper is an attempt to reconstruct and characterise discourses in the comparative literature studies in the 20th and 21st centuries. Beginning with the presentation of the methodology of comparative research in the 50’s of the 20th century, the author undertakes the evaluation of research strategies, models and concepts in the consequent decades. She points out that the subject of controversies and disputes of comparative researchers referred to difficulties connected with establishing the identity of a developing discipline, its instrumentation and place in the contemporary, postmodern directions of literature studies. While recalling and commenting on the opinions of Polish and foreign academics, she indicates the methodological intricacies accompanying an attempt to clarify the research aims and tasks of comparative studies in the period of cultural turn. In this aspect, she also considers the category of the dialogue and discursiveness, interculturalism and transculturalism along with the aspect of translation and its role in the process of cross-cultural communication.

Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji i charakterystyki dyskursów w komparatystyce literackiej w XX i XXI wieku. Wychodząc od zaprezentowania metodologii badań porównawczych w latach pięćdziesiątych XX wieku, Autorka podejmuje ocenę strategii, modeli i koncepcji badawczych w kolejnych dziesięcioleciach. Przedmiotem kontrowersji i sporów komparatystów, podkreśla, były trudności związane z określeniem tożsamości rozwijającej się dyscypliny, jej instrumentarium i miejsca we współczesnych, ponowoczesnych kierunkach literaturoznawstwa. Przywołując i komentując wypowiedzi polskich i zagranicznych uczonych, wskazuje na metodologiczne zawiłości towarzyszące próbie uściślenia celów i zadań badawczych komparatystyki w okresie tzw. zwrotu kulturowego. W tym kontekście rozważa także kategorię dialogu i dialogowości, interkulturowości i transkulturowości oraz zagadnienie przekładu i jego rolę w procesie międzykulturowej komunikacji.

Dieser Aufsatz versteht sich als ein Versuch, die in der literarischen Komparatistik im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert vorkommenden Diskurse zu rekonstruieren und zu charakterisieren. Nach der Darstellung der Methodologie der vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft in den 50er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts, befaßt sich die Verfasserin mit Strategien, Modellen und Forschungskonzepten der folgenden Jahrzehnte. Sie betont dabei, dass etwaige Kontroversen der Komparatisten aus den Schwierigkeiten bei der Bestimmung der Identität, des Instrumentariums sowie des Standortes der sich entwickelnden Disziplin unter den zeitgenössischen, postmodernen Richtungen der Literaturwissenschaft resultieren. Das Anführen und Kommentieren von Aussagen polnischer und ausländischer Forscher lässt die methodologischen Probleme erkennen, die den Prozess begleiten, Ziele und Forschungszwecke der Komparatistik in der Zeit des sog. cultural turn zu präzisieren. In diesem Kontext werden auch die Kategorien von Dialog und Dialogizität, Interkulturalität und Transkulturalität sowie die Frage der Übersetzung und ihre Rolle im Prozess der interkulturellen Kommunikation erörtert.
