The study focuses on the system of translation that combines the figures of dandyism, masculinity, maleness, literature and literary criticism. In an extensive corpus that includes literary works composed between mid-eighteenth century and early-twentieth century, the dandiacal character embodies the more or less problematic association of masculine, feminine and effeminate features. Between conformity and transgressiveness, the hero-dandy reveals the plastic, performative part inherent in individuation, while dramatizing the limits of the grand narratives of heteronormativity and patriarchy.

Studium koncentruje się na systemie tłumaczenia, który łączy postaci dandyzmu, maskulinizmu, męskości, literatury i krytyki literackiej. W obszernym korpusie, zawierającym utwory literackie z połowy XVIII wieku i początku XX wieku, charakter dandysowaty uosabia mniej lub bardziej problematyczny związek cech męskich, kobiecych i zniewieściałych. Pomiędzy zgodnością a transgresją bohater-dandys ujawnia plastyczną, performatywną część związaną z indywiduacją, jednocześnie dramatyzując granice wielkich narracji heteronormatywności i patriarchatu.

L’étude porte sur le système de translations qui permet d’associer les figures du dandysme, de la masculinité, du mâle, de la littérature et de la critique littéraire. Dans un corpus élargi constitué par des œuvres littéraires composées entre la moitié du 18e siècle et le début du 20e siècle, le personnage dandyesque incarne l’association plus ou moins problématique des caractères masculin, féminin et efféminé. Entre conformité et transgression, le héros-dandy révèle la part plastique et performative de l’individuation, tout en mettant en scène la limite des grands récits de l’hétéronormativité et de l’idéologie patriarcale

Dandyzm nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do hołdowania oryginalności i wytworności ubioru. W istocie doskonałość stroju polega na zupełnej prostocie, która zresztą jest najlepszym sposobem wyróżniania się. Niniejszy artykuł pokazuje, że wyrafinowana elegancja jest wyznacznikiem arystokratycznej wyższości ducha, sposobem walki z wszechobecną użytecznością i uniformizacją. Dzięki wyszukanemu strojowi dandys nie jest człowiekiem anonimowym; to buntownik, który balansując na granicy konwenansów, podejmuje nieustanne ryzyko, zamieniając swą egzystencję w grę sprzeczności.

Contrary to popular belief, dandyism is not an immoderate delight in elegance. In fact, for the perfect dandy the excellence of costume is only a sign of aristocratic superiority of mind. The present paper aims to show the subtle manipulations, by means of which the dandy provokes society and the salon public, nonchalantly merging sublime manners and outrageous impertinence. Dandy, therefore, is not an ordinary man following fashion, but a rebel who don’t hesitate to play with rules, who takes a permanent risk, turning his existence in the game contradictions.

Derrière l’ostentation et la frivolité apparentes, il faut percevoir l’habit du dandy en tant que signe de sa lutte contre l’égalité et l’utilité des gens. Grâce au vêtement recherché il n’est plus un individu anonyme, il se montre à autrui en tant qu’un homme révolté, en dehors du commun. Ainsi, nous tenterons de montrer qu’il existe toute une philosophie de cet art de bien s’habiller, qu’on ne peut pas enfermer le dandy dans un album avec des gravures de mode, car il mérite bien qu’on le mette dans le rang des artistes qui exploitent la mode à leurs fins, à savoir la provocation et le jeu avec les règles en vigueur sans s’y asservir.

Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) nie stronił od kobiet, chociaż fascynowały go męskie przyjaźnie. Zdaniem niektórych biografów, może to wskazywać na homoerotyczny element jego osobowości. Do jego najbliższych przyjaciół należeli głośni dandysi okresu Regencji – pisarz Edward Bulwer-Lytton i artysta amator hrabia Alfred d’Orsay. Disraeli miał kilka romansów z mężatkami, ale po ślubie z bogatą wdową stał się kochającym i wiernym małżonkiem. Mimo pokaźnego majątku żony, miał problemy finansowe, które w końcu udało mu się rozwiązać dzięki pieniądzom, które hojnie zapisała mu tajemnicza dama z Kornwalii. Spośród wszystkich kobiet, które poznał Disraeli, królowa Wiktoria zajmowała szczególne i wyjątkowe miejsce. Królowa ceniła jego lojalność i poświęcenie oraz uwielbiała jego pochlebstwa.

In his youth, Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) did not shy away from women, although he was fascinated by male friendships, which – as suggest some biographers – could point to the homoerotic element of his personality. His closest friends included two prominent dandies of the Regency era – the writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton and the amateur artist Count Alfred d’Orsay. His non-English appearance, exceptional intelligence and dandy’s fame attracted the attention of many London ladies. Disraeli had several affairs with married women, but after his marriage with a widow of large fortune, he became a loving and faithful husband. Despite his wife’s considerable wealth, Disraeli continued to have serious financial problems, which he finally resolved thanks to the money bequeathed to him by the mysterious lady from Cornwall. Of all the women who Disraeli met, Queen Victoria occupied a special and unique place. She appreciated his loyalty and dedication and adored his flattery.
