The Vision of Sculpture as Defined in Conversations with a Deafblind Person

This article aims at describing a piece of art created by a person with simultaneous visual and hearing impairment. It is an attempt to show how the picture of reality is conveyed through the sculpture. It also indicates an individual and specific approach to the world and creative imagination of a deafblind person. The basic method of studying the creative process were discussions with the dabbling deafblind artists about the world and individual phenomena of reality, about the act of creating a sculpture, as well as their experiences accompanying the act of creation and its finalisation, when it was time to assess their piece of art. Various methods of communications were used to interview the artists (sign language, fingerspelling, gestures and others), which allowed to place the method in the field of cognitivism. The article consists of the most vital conclusions of the author’s research concerning creative possibilities as well as knowledge of the artists about particular phenomena. The key to such a model of analysis is the notion of a sign as defined by semiotics (Morris and Peirce).

Artykuł podejmuje problem twórczości rzeźbiarskiej osób głuchoniewidomych. Twórczość ta jest tutaj rozumiana na gruncie poglądów estetycznych, jak również jako forma rehabilitacji i terapii osób niepełnosprawnych. Na wstępie przedstawiona została krótka charakterystyka konsekwencji głuchoślepoty oraz działalność Towarzystwa Pomocy Głuchoniewidomym, które podejmuje różne przedsięwzięcia. Jednym z nich są plenery organizowane od 1990 r. w Centrum Rzeźby Polskiej w Orońsku. W artykule podjęto następujące zagadnienia: wpływ percepcji dotykowej na tworzenie rzeźb przez osoby głuchoniewidome, znaczenie odbioru tych rzeźb przez osoby widzące dla poznania świata osób głuchoniewidomych, traktowanie rzeźb jako sposobu komunikowania się ze światem i z innymi, charakterystyka estetyki rzeźb (tematyka, forma) i jej związek ze stopniem niepełnosprawności, znaczenie samodzielności, indywidualności, wrażliwości sensorycznej dotyku w procesie rzeźbienia przez głuchoniewidomych, odbiór rzeźb przez osoby sprawne (odmienność percepcji, miejsca prezentacji, popularyzacja), znaczenie uczestnictwa w plenerach dla rehabilitacji społecznej osób niepełnosprawnych, ocena artystyczna twórczości osób niepełnosprawnych.

The focus of the article is the sculpture made by deafblind people. This artistic work is understood on the grounds of esthetic views and as a form of rehabilitation and therapy for people with disabilities. First a brief description of the consequences of deafblindness is presented and the activity of the Association for the Welfare of the Deafblind, which undertakes different projects. One of them are the workshops organized since 1990 in the Centre of Polish Sculpture. The article includes the following topics: the impact of tactile perception on the creation of sculptures by deafblind people, the importance of the perception of these sculptures by sighted people to learn about the deafblind’s world, the use of sculpture as a way to communicate with the world and with others, esthetic characteristics of sculptures and their connection to the degree of disability, the importance of independence, individuality, and tactile sensory sensitivity in the carving process by deafblind people, the reception of sculptures by people without disabilities (different perception and place of exhibition, popularization), the importance of participation in the workshops for the social rehabilitation of people with disabilities, artistic estimation of the work created by people with disabilities.

Artykuł jest próbą opisu aktu twórczego osoby z jednoczesnym uszkodzeniem wzroku i słuchu. Ukazuje sposób kreowania obrazu rzeczywistości w rzeźbie, a także indywidualny, specyficzny stosunek do świata i wyobraźnię twórczą głuchoniewidomego artysty. Podstawową metodą badania procesu twórczego była rozmowa z całkowicie głuchoniewidomym twórcą, prowadzona za pomocą wszelkich możliwych kodów komunikacyjnych na temat świata i pojedynczych zjawisk rzeczywistości, rzeźbiarskiego aktu twórczego oraz przeżyć artysty w czasie rzeźbienia i po jego zakończeniu, gdy przychodził czas na ocenę rzeźby. Proponowana metoda mieści się w narzędziach badań kognitywnych. Artykuł zawiera najważniejsze wnioski z moich badań dotyczących możliwości twórczych oraz wiedzy rzeźbiarza na temat określonych zjawisk rzeczywistości. Kluczem do proponowanego modelu analizy aktu twórczego jest pojęcie znaku wypracowane przez semiotykę (Morris i Peirce).
