Celem artykułu jest analiza zjawiska korepetycji wśród młodzieży. Korzystanie z korepetycji można ujmować jako formę obrony klas średnich przed deklasacją społeczną. Ta reakcja pojawia się w warunkach umasowienia edukacji wyższej. Klasy średnie starają się zapewnić swoim dzieciom przewagę edukacyjną i zwiększyć ich szanse życiowe. Na peryferiach to zjawisko przybiera na sile, gdyż wykształcenie stanowi cenny kapitał wymieniany na inne dobra. Do analiz zostały wykorzystane badania sondażowe zrealizowane wśród uczniów szkół gimnazjalnych i maturalnych w regionie. Korzystanie z korepetycji było skorelowane z kapitałem kulturowym, ekonomicznym i społecznym. Uczestnictwo w korepetycjach było też związane z wysoką pozycją wyższego wykształcenia w systemie wartości, wysokimi aspiracjami edukacyjnymi i zawodowymi, orientacją merytokratyczną i antyegalitarną. Korepetycje uczniów wpisują się w styl życia klas średnich. Stanowią narzędzie w walce o zachowanie statusu społecznego.

The article aims to analyse the phenomenon of private tutoring among young people. Reliance on private tutoring may be seen as a form of the middle classes’ defence against social degradation. This reaction occurred when higher education became mass education. Middle-class representatives try to provide their children with an educational edge and to increase their career opportunities. In peripheral regions the phenomenon is accelerated, since education constitutes valuable capital which can be exchanged for other goods. The analysis draws on the results of surveys carried out among lower secondary school pupils and secondary school pupils in the region. The findings show that private tutoring is correlated with cultural, economic and social capital. Having a private tutor is also related to giving high status to higher education, high educational and professional aspirations and meritocratic and anti-egalitarian orientation. Private tutoring is part of the lifestyle of the middle classes and it is a tool used to maintain their social status.
