The turn of the 19th and 20th century brought modernity in Galicia. One consequence of this process was radicalization of political life. Democratic liberals, Galician political activists connected with the Cracow democratic journal New Reform, concerned about the future of the country and their party, had to respond to this phenomenon. In revising their programme, as well as arguing against ideological opponents, they wanted to halt the growth of political radicalism in popularity, and at the same time save Galicia against savagery of political manners. Their failure resulted from the crisis of liberalism related to arrival of the era of mass political parties.
