A vinda dos imigrantes estrangeiros, incluídos os alemães, à província do Espírito Santo, na se-gunda metade do século XIX, que pretendia a ocupação e o uso produtivo da terra, deu-se com o enfrentamento de muitas e severas dificuldades de ordens econômica, política, social e cultural. Entre tantos problemas, havia também grandes necessidades na área da saúde, especialmente no tratamento das doenças e moléstias. O presente artigo objetiva analisar quais foram as principais ocorrências dos “males nos trópicos” entre os imigrantes alemães e seus descendentes nos pri-meiros anos de sua chegada ao Espírito Santo, especialmente com base no relatório do represen-tante do Governo Suíço, Barão Johann Jakob Von Tschudi, em visita à província, no ano de 1860

The arrival of foreign immigrants, including Germans, to the province of Espírito Santo in the second half of the nineteenth century resulted in many severe economic, political, social and cul-tural difficulties regarding the occupation and the productive usage of the land Among many is-sues, there was also a great need for healthcare, especially for treatment of diseases and ailments. This article aims to analyze the main events of the "evils in the tropics" among German immi-grants and their descendants in the early years of their arrival in the Espírito Santo, mostly on the basis of a report by Baron Johann Jakob von Tschudi, a representative of the Swiss Government, prepared when he visited the province in 1860.
