The subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs result- ing from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face today. The article aims to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities based on the example of homes for the elderly as a system of functional and behavioral stimuli in the context of ergonomic and sociological solutions. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly in the specific living environment of a home for the elderly. Functional solutions are important to consider but so are the adaptive capabilities and needs of the elderly, who are at the stage of their life when the stability of living environment and personal safety are crucial. Therefore improving the standard of technical equipment and modernizing the living space will not automatically lead to the improvement of quality of life of old people. It is also necessary for the designers to be aware that they need to consider the spatial competence of the target users, the importance of human capital senior citizens represent in our society and the standardization of cultural norms contained in the living practice of the elderly. The above constitute the factors which make it possible to organize the use of living space properly.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie środowiska fizycznego obiektów opieki geriatrycznej na przykładzie domów pomocy społecznej i oddziałów geriatrycznych jako środowiska warunkującego sprawność działań opiekuńczych i pielęgnacyjnych. Dotychczasowa tendencja projektowania wymienionych obiektów zakładała prymat procedur medycznych czy regulacji prawnych w opiece nad osobami starszymi. Obecnie natomiast podmiotem w kształtowaniu rozwiązań przestrzennych jest senior oraz jego potrzeby i dysfunkcje. Zostały one przedstawione w artykule na podstawie przeglądu piśmiennictwa oraz przeprowadzonego procesu koncepcyjnego. Osoby starsze są szczególną grupą użytkowników z powodu zwiększonych indywidualnych potrzeb wynikających z ich stanu fizycznej sprawności, psychicznego podejścia do starzenia się oraz często obniżonej pozycji społecznej. Wpływa to na sposób projektowania obiektów przeznaczonych dla osób starszych, zwłaszcza tych z sektora opieki zdrowotnej oraz pomocy społecznej. Opierając się na badaniach literaturowych i wizytach studialnych w domach pomocy społecznej oraz na oddziałach geriatrycznych, określono zasadnicze problemy przestrzenne dotyczące obiektów dla osób starszych. Istotnym elementem tych działań są rozwiązania ergonomiczne. Zaprezentowano również propozycje projektowe związane z potrzebami osób starszych i przykład wykorzystania badań w projektowaniu metodą Evidence-Based Design oraz rezultaty badań koncepcyjnych.

The aim of the article is to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities based on the examples of care homes and geriatric wards as environments which condition the effectiveness of care and nursing activities. So far, the tendency in design has assumed the priority of medical procedures or legal regulations in caring for the elderly. At present, however, the subject of the spatial solutions is the senior citizen and his/her needs and dysfunctions which are presented in the article based on the literature research and the performer conceptual process. Elderly people are a specific group of users due to the increased number of individual needs resulting from the level of their physical ability, their mental approach to the aging process and often lowered social position. All these factors have an impact upon designing facilities aimed at the elderly, especially those from the health care sector and social care. The principal spatial problems concerning facilities for the elderly have been determined based on the literature research and study visits in care homes and geriatric wards. Ergonomic solutions are an important element of such activities. Some design suggestions connected with the needs of the elderly are also presented along with an example of using research in designing by employing the Evidence-Based Design method, as well as the results of the conceptual research.
