Opisano w przekroju historycznym udział poznańskiej medycyny w rozwoju balneologii, począwszy od niezwykle dokładnych i trafnych obserwacji Józefa Strusia (1510-1568) dotyczących wpływu różnych kąpieli na zachowanie się tętna. Wspomniano o wybitnym poznańskim lekarzu Karolu Marcinkowskim (1800-1846). Podkreślono fakt powołania w Poznaniu pierwszej uniwersyteckiej katedry balneologii utworzonej przez Franciszka Chłapowskiego (1846-1923). Omówiono oryginalny system hydroterapii opracowany w Poznaniu przez Jana Żniniewicza (1872-1952). Szczególną uwagę poświęcono wybitnemu balneologowi Józefowi Jankowiakowi (1904-1984), twórcy Instytutu Balneoklimatycznego w Poznaniu (1952), dyrektorowi tej jednostki do 1975. Instytut ten został przekształcony w Instytut Medycyny Uzdrowiskowej (1986) i działał do 1992 pod kierownictwem dyrektora Gerarda Straburzyńskiego.

The paper describes, from the historical point of view, the contribution of the medical world of Poznań to the development of balneology, beginning with very precise and adequate observations of Jan Struś (1510-1568), concerning the influence of different baths on the pulse changes. Also, Karol Marcinkowski (1800-1846), a prominent physician from Poznań, has been mentioned. It has been emphasized that in 1920, the Poznan University, as first in Poland, established the Department of Balneology on the initiative of Franciszek Chłapowski (1846-1923). A new original method of hydrotherapy, developed by a physician from Poznań, Jan Żniniewicz (1872-1952), has been discussed. Special attention has been devoted to an eminent balneologist Józef Jankowiak (1904-1984), founder of the Institute ofBalneoclimatology in Poznań (1952) and director of this Institute until 1975. In 1986 the Institute of Balneoclimatology was transformed into the Institute of Health Resort Medicine, which existed until 1992 and was headed by director Gerard Straburzyński.
