A Selection of Texts], Praha: Slovanský ústav Akademie věd České republiky, v.v.i., 2018, 468 pp.This review presents Mirosław Jankowiak’s monograph against the background of other selections of Slavic dialectal texts as well as shows its novelty in relation to previous works on Belarusian dialects in Latvia. The author discusses Jankowiak’s approach to the issues in focus, e.g. the system of transcription, the usefulness of the collected material for future research and the comparison between the latest observations and Evfimiĭ Karskiĭ’s works from the early twentieth century. Gwary białoruskie na ŁotwieRecenzjaMirosław Jankowiak, Současná běloruská nářečí v Lotyšsku. Charakteristika. Výběr textů [Współczesne gwary białoruskie na Łotwie. Charakterystyka. Wybór tekstów], Praha: Slovanský ústav Akademie věd České republiky, v.v.i., 2018, 468 ss.Recenzja ukazuje monografię Mirosława Jankowiaka na tle innych wyborów słowiańskich tekstów gwarowych, a także określa jej nowatorstwo w stosunku do wcześniejszych prac na temat gwar białoruskich na Łotwie. Omówione zostały zastosowane przez autora rozwiązania, system transkrypcji, porównanie najnowszych obserwacji z badaniami Jewfimija Karskiego z początków XX wieku, a także użyteczność zebranego materiału w dalszych badaniach.

Publikowane materiały zostały zebrane pod koniec 1988 roku w trzech wielkopolskich miejscowościach: Domachowie, Kwilczu i Wielichowie. Stanowią one kolejny etap prac autorki nad sennikiem ludowym. Część pierwsza materiałów to interpretacja snów, druga – opowieści o snach, które potwierdzają i jednocześnie stanowią jak gdyby dodatkową motywację sposobu wykładania snów przez nosicieli kultury ludowej, a w przypadku snów spełnionych – motywację opartą na życiowym doświadczeniu informatorów. Tego rodzaju opowieści są związane ze szczególnie ważnymi momentami ich życia: czyjąś śmiercią, chorobą, narodzinami. Spośród kilku opowieści o snach, zanotowanych w Wielkopolsce, autorka przywołuje takie, które wydały się jej najciekawsze, a które informatorom szczególnie utkwiły w pamięci: (1) sny poprzedzające: (a) śmierć matki; (b) narodziny syna; (2) sny o zmarłych: (a) mężu; (b) dziecku; (3) sen o zjawieniu się Matki Boskiej.

The published materials were collected towards the end of 1988, in three localities in the region of Greater Poland, i.e. in Domachowo, Kwilicz, and Wielichowo. The present article is another stage in the author’s work on the folk dream book. The first part of the materials consists of interpretations of dreams. The second part comprises stories about dreams, which corroborate and – at the same time – are a specific additional motivation for the way of interpreting dreams in the carriers of folk culture, and, in the case of dreams that happened in real life – a motivation based on life experience of the interviewees. Such stories are related to specifically important moments in their lives: somebody’s death, an illness, or a birth. Among few stories recorded in the Greater Poland region, the author quotes the ones that seemed the most interesting to her, and which stood out in the interviewees’ memories: (1) anticipatory dreams: (a) mother’s death, (b) the birth of the son, (2) dreams about the deceased: (a) about the husband, (b) about the child, (3) the dream about the appearance of Mary, mother of Jesus.
