In this text I try to present formal and functional picture of the preposition ‘vo’ in the Macedonian dialects. Also, I show the geographic distribution of the preposition ‘u’ (with the meaning at, beside). This helps to see how the prepositions ‘vo’ and ‘u’ are spread over the Macedonian dialectal territory, and also to see their formal and functional distribution. The prepositions ‘vo’ and ‘u’ are among the differential features that divide the western dialectal complex from southeastern dialectal complex. The two maps show that borders of their territories mainly correspond with the dialectal borders of two dialectal complexes. Regarding their functional fields – in the frames of the spatial relations (static vs. dynamic) both forms cover same fields. Thus, regarding static relation, both ‘vo’ (western complex) and ‘u’ (southeastern and northern complex) are used as markers of the position of the localized object regarding the localizer, i.e. the situations where a localized object takes part of the space determined by the localizer. Regarding the dynamic relation, we can see the same results, i.e. both ‘vo’ and ‘u’ are used as markers of the adlative relation (goal) which is the approximation of the localized object to the inside or inside borders of the localizer.

This paper presents the main achievements of Polish dialectology after the year 1989. Monographs showing various aspects of dialectological research, including those in the field of phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary have been referred to. The text is supplemented by an extensive bibliography.
Rozważania zawarte w artykule dotyczą zjawiska wariantywnego udziału podstaw słowotwórczych w procesie kategoryzacji funkcjonujących w leksyce gwar północnomałopolskich i przyległych formacji rzeczownikowych o charakterze czynnościowym.

The domain of discourse concerns the phenomenon of the variant participation of the word-formation base forms in the process of categorizing the northern Lesser Poland dialects functioning in the vocabulary and adjacent noun formations of a functional nature. The principle of in/chronicity adopted in the description allowed the creation of formations which, categorized within the semantic classes having the primary relations with the verb base forms, are also connected with the variant participle or noun base forms. The proposed approach gives the opportunity to present more fully the derivational phenomena, to consider all the motivational relations and to show their impact on the categorization of derived units. Such an interpretation of derivative formations is intended to expose the next stages of derivative processes and, importantly in terms of typological word-formation, to form extended suffixes as expressions of categorical values. The interpretation of derivatives carried out in accordance with the accepted principles of in/chronicity provides the opportunity to follow changes within the categorical semantics, to capture modifications in the word-formation meanings of individual derived units on the basis of variant base forms because the in/chronicity does not set a categorical limit when determining relations between motivational derivatives and the meanings which are basic for them.
W. Nehring’s onomastic and dialectologic interests can be followed based on a few texts only. They document not only excellent knowledge of methodologic papers of Slavic onomastic founders as F. Miklosich but Silesian names problems — especially patronimic forms with suffixes -ic, -ice, -wice wich in German were changed into -itz, -witz as well. Nehring points out also the substitutution phenomenon and underlines that suffix -witz often replaces other Polish suffixes such as: -ce, -ec, -ica.
Artykuł ukazuje postrzeganie gwary ludowej w XIX wieku w czterech perspektywach. Omawia rozwój badań naukowych nad gwarami, zapoczątkowanych przez etnografów i kontynuowanych przez dialektologów. Pokazuje sposoby wykorzystania gwar ludowych w literaturze, wyodrębnia funkcje, jakie pełni mowa ludowa w dziele literackim. Na podstawie najważniejszych słowników dziewiętnastowiecznych ustala relacje między leksyką gwarową a ogólną. Analizując zasób rejestrowanej leksyki nacechowanej terytorialnie i sposób jej kwalifikowania, zmierza do rekonstrukcji świadomości językowej dziewiętnastowiecznych słownikarzy. Na podstawie poradników językowych ustala stosunek ówczesnej normy poprawnościowej do form gwarowych.

The article presents the perception of folk dialect in the 19th century in four perspectives. Research into dialects initiated by ethnographers and, continued by dialectologists are discussed in the article. The article also shows how the dialects have been used in literature. It extracts the features of folk speech in literature. On the basis of the most important nineteenth-century dictionaries the author indicates the relationship between dialect and general lexis. Through the analysis of registered territorial lexes and how it is qualified, the article aims to reconstruct the linguistic consciousness of the 19th century dictionariy writers. On the basis of language guides the article shows the ratio of contemporary standards of correctness to folk dialect word forms.
The objective of this article is a linguistics description of unconventional development of a group of lexems. They represent the group of nouns so-called “quantitive nouns”. Those lexems being genetically nouns by undergoing a gradual numeralisation process are used to describe quantity or size of a given set. As a result of such slow lexicalisation in the function of numerals, the subject group that contains such noun adopts the form of predicate typical of numeral structures, i.e. third person singular, neuter gender (in case of forms that determine gender), which determines that fact that given lexem is used as a numeral, e.g.: Na jeziorze pływało gwałt kaczek. In the analysis the particulary attention has been paid to features common for both the general language and dialects as well as to these aspects which clearly shows a difference between the diacectical lexis and general Polish. This paper shows that opposed to general language the dialectical lexems – nouns so-called “quantitive nouns” – enter into relations typical not only of numerals but also of adverbs, e.g.: A to płótno było gwałt moncniejsze jak kupne; Buł jedyn chłop kąsek głupkowaty.

The author tries to determine a range of occurrence of the word “nicpoty(m)” on the Polish ethnic and linguistic territory. This word originated from a pronominal phrase “nic po tym/tem” that in various morphological variants (nicpotym, nicpotem, nicpoty) is used in dialects in the function of an adjective/adverb describing a worthless, meaningless thing/activity, or in the function of a noun naming a man who is a good-for-nothing, rascal or hooligan. Today these forms are considered as regionalisms from Wielkopolska but in the past they were known in the bigger area of Poland covering its western and southern parts and were used in common Polish. To determine their originally furthest range of functioning the author had to analyse nationwide and dialectal philological sources both historical and contemporary.

The subject of the paper is the lexeme "chęchy" referring to inaccessible wet terrain of abundant vegetation which makes passage difficult. The range of occurrence and the etymology of the lexeme have been established on the basis of linguistic data from materials on General Polish and local dialects printed and published on the internet. It is a lexeme derived from the Wielkopolska region and known to both inhabitants of large cities such as Poznań and Łódź, as well as to populations of central and western Poland. It is used in everyday language and in chrematonyms – the names of shops and products. In terms of its etymology, it is an onomatopoeic word formed in imitation of the sounds of the rustling of leaves and branches and in all probability originates from Old Slavonic. Evidence of this has been found in its connections with other Slavonic lexemes of the same root and similar meaning. Its traces are also found in toponyms – place names and hydronyms beyond the Wielkopolska region and central Poland.
Artykuł przedstawia różne sposoby interpretowania faktów gwarowych i odpowiadających im faktów kulturowych.

The article presents various ways in which dialectal facts and the corresponding cultural facts are interpreted. The interpretation is made by dialect-speakers as well as by professional dialectologists at various stages of their work. It appears that various dialectologists interpret identical dialectal facts in a variety of ways. The authors of extensive collective works (e.g. Słownik gwar polskich [Dictionary of Polish Dialects]) keep trying to evaluate these divergences in the objective way. The correct interpretation of cultural facts and the corresponding linguistic (dialectal) facts is of great importance. To avoid mistakes, a cooperation between dialectologists and historians of culture (ethnographers) is highly recommended.
This article constitutes a survey of the features of the local dialect of Warmia which is based on the composition written by Walenty Barczewski. In this work the features of phonetic, word formation and inflection of the local dialect are discussed. The problem of vocalism shows phonetic features of the dialect including all kinds of vowels and contracted forms. The analysis of consonants consist of the describtion of bilabial, alvedar, affricate, velar and groups of consonants. The analysis of word formation of words that belong to the dialect presents tendencies of forms that considerably differ from the literary language. The analysis of inflection depict the influence of phonetic processes on the inflection of words and occurence of specific inflection forms of the dialect of Warmia. The final part presents the conclusion of the research.

The dynamic changes in the linguistic situation in the Polish countryside, described since the end of World War II, require a different view of the relationship between dialectology and sociolinguistics. Traditional dialectology, i.e. the one we owe to the works of Kazimierz Nitsch, exposed two factors: ruralness and geographical diversity. At the same time, dialectology retained autonomy from sociolinguistics. Post-war changes in Polish borders and multi-million people migrations, as well as civilization changes, made the geographical aspect of the speech of the rural population fall into the background. Dialectology today focuses on generationality, situationality and gender diversity, and these are strictly sociolinguistic factors. It follows, therefore, that dialectology in the new linguistic conditions of the Polish countryside has become a subdiscipline of sociolinguistics.
The anthroponymic material analyzed in this article comes from “The Dictionary of Surnames of Piotrków Trybunalski and its Surroundings Residents in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries” edited by Elżbieta Piotrowicz, Agnieszka Raszewska-Klimas and Lidia Pacan-Bonarek. There are three main groups of anthroponyms among variative forms of surnames such as 1) morphological variants; 2) graphic variants; 3) phonetic variants. Both linguistic and non-linguistic phenomena influenced the use of various forms of the surnames. The anthroponymic variants developed under the influence of cultural factors – a sign of the interpenetration of cultures and different naming systems; historical factors – the reflection of orthography and spelling in the nineteenth century; dialectal factors – the impact of dialectal features belonging to different dialects; and onomastic factors.

This paper provides a synthesis of the various address systems in Breton dialects, and their evolution during the last century. It discusses the available data and provides the elicitation results from recent fieldwork. Three distinct address systems are described: hierarchical T–V (plurals are directed to superiors as a V form), gendered T–V (plurals are directed to women and girls as a V form), and non-dual (the once singular marker noted †2SG is missing in all of the paradigms, and the once plural form noted †V is the unique address pronoun and does not realise a formal marker). These systems are mapped to their respective territories of usage and an analysis is offered of the diachronic evolution and the cross-influences of these three systems over the last century. Most of the speakers in the central and southern area are restricted to a unique address pronoun, like Modern English you. This system is gaining ground towards the coasts, where a distinctive T address among male close friends or relatives gives rise to a T–V gendered system like in Welsh (Watkins). In the remaining North and South-East areas, a hierarchical T–V system organised centrally around age and social status is resisting the extension of the central area much more. Evidence is presented for independent subsystems inside both T–V systems: addresses to animals, to clergymen and to God. Occasional inversion of an expected marker serves emotionally charged interactions (aggressive T, hypocoristic V).

Księżacy from Łowicz distinguished themselves from their neighbours and other ethnic groups with their speech and customs, but primarily with their outfit which is regarded to be the most glamorous of all Masovian costumes. In the first half of the 19th century woolen striped fabrics (which changed its colours over the years) became the basis of this costume. The Łowicz folk costume has been preserved until today, but it has undergone so many transformations that it does not resemble the one from the beginning of 19th century. The modern, 20th century costume is more colourful and features richer ornamentation. The subject of this paper is to discuss the vocabulary connected to the Łowicz folk costume. Names for women’s and men’s costumes as well as the names of colors from the Łowicz striped fabric will be presented, along with their various versions from the area of the Łowicz Duchy.

As a border city between three civilizations (i.e. Roman, German and Slavic), Trieste became a destination for the Migration of Slavs, especially Southern Slavs. The city was already home to the largest urban Slovene agglomeration in the 19th century and more than half of its citizens were of Slavic origin. In the socio-political situation of those times, the Croatians began to play a significant role. The World War I and post-war reality diametrically changed the power structures to the benefit of the Italian Kingdom and Fascism between the wars and during World War II severely threatened the existence of this part of the city’s inhabitants. Post-war political changes (the revolution of the Italian Republic and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) did not facilitate good contacts with the home country. Only the establishment of the independent Republic of Croatia brought about change in the relations between both countries and the diaspora itself.
The subject of discussion made the issue of categorical multifunctionality of dialectal substantival derivatives. Subjected to the interpretation the derivational material obtained from lexical store of about 30,000 entries accumulated in The folk vocabulary of former provinces of Lodz and Kielce [Dejna, 1974–1985]. Selected derivatives are categorized after taking the relevant methods of typological, functional-segmental and in/chronic word formation into consideration. The selected image revealed both directions of the acquisition of new meanings by the derived units and showed the regularity and the model of mechanismes which introducing derivatives in other areas of the categorical semantics.

Przedmiotem omówienia uczyniono zagadnienie wielofunkcyjności kategorialnej rzeczownikowych derywatów gwarowych o charakterze czynnościowym. Poddany interpretacji materiał słowotwórczy pozyskano z liczącego około 30 tysięcy haseł zasobu leksykalnego zgromadzonego w Słownictwie ludowym byłych województw kieleckiego i łódzkiego [Dejna, 1974–1985]. Wyselekcjonowane derywaty skategoryzowano po uwzględnieniu metod właściwych słowotwórstwu typologicznemu, funkcjonalno-segmentalnemu (gniazdowemu) oraz in/chronii. Wyłoniony obraz odsłonił zarówno kierunki przejmowania przez jednostki derywowane nowych znaczeń, jak i wykazał regularność, modelowość mechanizmów wprowadzających derywaty w inne obszary semantyki kategorialnej.
The author examined the issue of a derivational tautology of nouns and adjectives on examples from the dialects of Central Poland. Various causes of this phenomenon of a grammatical (derivational and flectional) character were indicated. Some of them were connected with shaping of semantic function of individual formants (e.g. those forming names of places and activity instruments), other with their productivity (e.g. adjective suffix -ny) and also with their influence on more distinct categorial function of derivatives (cf. bornik, gonciarka, kopydło). Some changes were observed in recognizing originally tautological derivatives that are connected with the modification of meaning of words formed with their help (e.g. gąsiątko – gąsię).

W oparciu o materiał językowy, pochodzący z gwar Polski centralnej, zostało omówione zagadnienie tautologii słowotwórczej występujące wśród rzeczowników i przymiotników.
Podstawowym i nastręczającym wielu trudności etapem analizy leksykalnej jest rozpoznanie rodowodu poszczególnych jednostek leksykalnych, występujących w badanych tekstach, tzn. wyodrębnienie słownictwa gwarowego, archaicznego i rzadkiego, identyfikacja neologizmów i innych warstw leksykalnych. Kolejny etap to wskazanie kręgów tematycznych, wokół których skupia się słownictwo reprezentujące określone warstwy chronologiczne, terytorialne i środowiskowe języka (z reguły kręgi te są rozdzielne), a ostatecznie określenie funkcji, jaką słownictwo owo spełnia w utworze (w odniesieniu do rzeczywistości przedstawionej i na poziomie estetycznego oddziaływania na odbiorcę).

Deliberations included in this article concentrate around methodological aspects of lexical analysis of a literary work, in particular, a work that uses various lexical deposits, including dialectal vocabulary. Material basis was taken from the texts of Na Skalnym Podhalu series by Kazimierz Tetmajer, written at the beginning of XX century which was stylistically dominated by dialect stylization (Podhale region dialect was a model). A basic and posing many problems phase of lexical analysis is identification of an origin of respective lexical units existing in investigated texts i.e. separation of dialect, archaic and rare vocabulary, identification of neologisms and others. The next stage is showing thematic circles, around which vocabulary representing specific chronologic, territorial and environmental layers of language are gathered (usually, these layers are separable). The final phase is specification of a function that the said vocabulary plays in a literary work (in relation to the presented reality and on the level of esthetic influencing the recipient).
Dzieci kształtują swój język pod wpływem najbliższych. Od nich słyszą pierwsze słowa, zdania i do nich też kierują swoje pierwsze konstrukcje językowe. Z bagażem doświadczeń i sprawności językowych wyniesionych z domu dzieci rozpoczynają edukację szkolną.

Children form their language under the influence of close family members. From them they hear their first words and sentences. And to them they direct their first linguistic constructions. Children begin school education with the knowledge and skills gained at home. Therefore in a school one can observe the coexistence of different varieties of Polish. The aim of this article is to discuss the basic linguistic features of dialect origin in the oral statements of pupils, to determine roots of those utterances and their repartition according to the phase of their education. The author also pays attention to the didactic aspect, namely to the influence of those features on the process of teaching.
