The Ideal Love: Platonic or Frommian?

In this paper, I compare two theories of ideal love, the Platonic and Frommian, and argue that they give opposite advices to lovers in practice. While Plato emphasizes “whom to love” and urges one to continuously look for a better beloved, Erich Fromm emphasizes “how to love” and urges one to grow and change with one’s imperfect lov-er. Using the movie Her as an example, I explain why an ideal love is extremely diffi-cult to attain under the guidance of the Platonic and Frommian ideals. In an imperfect love, to leave or to stay seems to be a question with no simple answer.

The aim of this article is to show how the levels of dichotomy function in the artistic world of The Banishment, directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev. We try to put emphasis on the Zvyagintsev’s artistic method, to show that said idea works on several levels. We are convinced that the idea of duality is present in The Banishment as externally (for example motif of split in the family) as well as internally (the category of the doppelgänger).

Interpreting identity impressions through community making: From Brussels’ autonomous collective through the ethnic Albanian triangle

This paper, as part of a study explores the reinvention of identity and culture through community making, specifically in the process of creation and way of functioning of autonomous temporal groups and intentional communities through socio-cultural spaces. The analysis makes use of a network of four different organized communities from Western and South-Eastern Europe, namely Toestand (Brussels, Belgium), Termokiss (Prishtina, Kosova), Space Tetova (Tetova, North Macedonia), with a specific focus on the performance of the project − event Uzina (Tirana, Albania). Through an ethnographic approach, based on active participant observation and interviews that are shown below, this research is an attempt to engage the participating members of the different groups in the construction of the thorough insight of the research. The patterns of intercultural contact and reflexive behaviors in this collective’s endeavors, accentuate the complexity of relationships that arise in the course of the collaboration of the network and wider, revealing the ‘agonistic’ dynamics of Self and Other, West and East, unity and diversity, giver and receiver, hierarchy and equality, global and local, concentrating on new social movements and contemporary identity practices in Europe.

Jedną z najważniejszych cech językowej kreacji zagrożenia o podłożu społecznym i politycznym jest ciągłe odwoływanie się przez nadawców publicystycznych do kulturowej opozycji „swój” – „obcy” implikującej automatycznie opozycję „my” – „oni”. W niniejszym artykule wspomniane dwubiegunowe rozgraniczenie rozpatrywane jest w dwóch aspektach: Rosja – Zachód (USA, UE) oraz Rosja – Ukraina. Na podstawie zgromadzonego materiału ilustracyjnego wyodrębnione zostały główne elementy w kształtowaniu obrazu wroga. Wymieniona dychotomia stanowi swoisty rodzaj klucza, zasady porządkującej konstruowanie obrazu świata, modyfikuje istniejącą językową interpretację rzeczywistości w celu skuteczniejszego wpływania na poglądy i postawy odbiorców tekstów prasowych. W analizowanych tekstach publicystycznych omawiana opozycja zostaje dodatkowo zintensyfikowana, przez co kontrast pomiędzy obiema grupami („my” – „oni”) zaznacza się bardziej wyraziście.

The article deals with the description of the problem of tolerance and hostility that takes place during the period of a radical social change, the intensiﬁcation of the inter-ethnic and interreligious conﬂicts, the establishment of the humane relations between people and states, all of which are characteristic features of modernity, which entails a considerable interest in deﬁning the essence of these concepts, the development of the effective forms and methods of education, a tolerant personality.

Artykuł poświęcony jest aktualnej w dzisiejszych czasach kwestii dychotomii „tolerancja - wrogość”, mającej miejsce w okresie radykalnych przemian społecznych, nasilenia się konﬂ iktów międzyetnicznych i międzyreligijnych, kształtowania się relacji między ludźmi i państwami, opartych na zasadach humanitaryzmu. To wiąże się ze znacznym zainteresowaniem wyżej wymienioną kwestią, potrzebą wyznaczenia jej istoty, znalezieniem skutecznych form i metod edukacji osobowości tolerancyjnej.

Der Gegenstand des Artikels ist die Analyse der These von Hilary Putnam, die die Verflechtung von Fakten und Werten behandelt. Es werden dabei ausgewählte Argumente herangeführt, die der Philosoph zu ihrem Nachweis formuliert. Eines der Hauptziele, denen die These dient, ist die Verbindung von Wissenschaft und Ethik, die ein Ende der Vorstellung setzt, dass die Wissenschaft wertneutral sei. Während Putnams polemische Bemerkungen hinsichtlich der gegensätzlichen Stellungnahmen klar scheinen, sind manche konstruktiven Argumente, die sie unterstützen sollen, eher enigmatisch. Der Artikel setzt sich zum Ziel, diese Argumente zu erklären. Im ersten Teil des Artikels bespreche ich kurz die gegen die Dichotomie Fakten – Werte gerichteten Argumente von Putnam, die gegen die im Titel aufgestellte These sprechen. Im weiteren Teil bespreche ich die Frage der sog. dichten Begriffe, die Gegenbeispiele für die erwähnte Dichotomie bilden können, um anschließend die mit der Hauptthese verbundene These von der Interdependenz der Beschreibung und der Bewertung zu erläutern.

The subject of this paper is the analysis of Hilary Putnam’s thesis on the fact/value entanglement along with some of his arguments meant to corroborate this stance. One of his main objectives of putting forward this thesis is reconciliation of science and values, bringing an end to the picture of the former as a ‘value-free zone’. While Putnam’s polemics with standpoints conflicted with his own one are carried out in quite a comprehensive way, the way he formulates some of his constructive arguments meant to augment his own stance are a bit enigmatic. The goal of this paper is to clarify some of them. The first part of this paper briefly outlines Putnam’s arguments aiming to undermine the fact/value dichotomy, which is contradictory to the thesis title. The second one is focused on the issue of so called ‘thick concepts’, which might be considered as counterexamples for the aforementioned dichotomy, and the thesis, correlated with the title one, that description and evaluation are interdependent.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza tezy Hilarego Putnama o splątaniu faktów i wartości wraz z wybranymi argumentami, jakie filozof ten formułuje gwoli jej wsparcia. Jednym z głównych celów, jakim ma ona służyć jest pogodzenie nauki z etyką, kładące kres wyobrażeniu, iż ta pierwsza jest neutralna pod względem wartości. Jakkolwiek polemiczne uwagi Putnama pod adresem stanowisk sprzecznych z tytułową tezą wydają się dość jasne, niektóre argumenty konstruktywne na rzecz jej wsparcia są nieco enigmatyczne. Celem tego artykułu jest objaśnienie tych ostatnich. W pierwszej części tekstu krótko omawiam argumenty Putnama wymierzone w dychotomię fakty – wartości, którą przeczy tytułowej tezie. W dalszej części eseju omawiam kwestię tzw. gęstych pojęć, które mogą stanowić kontrprzykłady dla wspomnianej dychotomii, oraz skorelowaną z tytułową tezę o współzależności opisu i oceny.

This article is an up-to-date research of the problem of understanding of food as a literary and cultural code, characteristic manner of the character, peculiarities of the plot organization of the text and etc. The author pays attention to the newly-published and understudied work of the famous Ukrainian writer and analyzes it in the appropriate context. This article considers the features of the novel by O. Malyarenko "Typical Borya, or Two at One Table". The work analyzes peculiarities of the genre structure of the text, identifies features of the title of the work, defines its genre specificity. This article also investigates the role of food in the structure of "Typical Borja, or Two at One Table", analyzes the level of interaction between the main characters in the work. Separately, the author of the article ponders the question about the role of the mythological concept at different levels of organization of the work.
