The paper examines the social dimension of adjustment processes of reproduction. It is based on the postmodern contestation of the basic terms which clearly convey the legitimacy of public intervention and subsequently set its direction. The phenomenon of society endures in time and space thanks to its self-replication enhanced by the state. Firstly, the state is, in some sense, capable of organising and steering the process of social reproduction. It also provides the institutional framework for the confronting of interests. Secondly, the state is the beneficiary of social reproduction – its existence and development depends on the dynamics of the ‘duration’ of society. Obviously, demography is the key to the future. A social structure determines the success of individuals. That crucial factor directly shapes the basic substrate of social processes. The increasing break of the Polish demographic structure (the decline of reproduction rates and consequent diminution in cohorts of childbearing age) makes up the context of the fundamental problem of the natalistic policy. It also constitutes an axis of the undertaken considerations.

Artykuł podejmuje sygnalną refleksję nad społecznym wymiarem reprodukcyjnych procesów dostosowawczych. Została ona osnuta na postmodernistycznej kontestacji podstawowych pojęć. Te bowiem w oczywisty sposób decydują o zasadności interwencji publicznej, a następnie wyznaczają jej kierunki. Fenomen społeczeństwa trwa w czasie i przestrzeni dzięki odtwarzaniu samego siebie. Nowoczesne państwo odgrywa w tym istotną rolę systemową. Po pierwsze, jest poniekąd jego organizatorem (posiada narzędzia do ukierunkowania procesu reprodukcji społecznej), zapewnia bowiem prawne i organizacyjne ramy konfrontacji interesów. Po drugie, jest beneficjentem tego procesu – jego przetrwanie zależy od dynamiki „trwania” społeczeństwa. Demografia jest kluczem do przyszłości, od niej bezpośrednio zależy podstawowy substrat procesów społecznych. Struktura społeczna determinuje szanse rozwojowe tworzących ją jednostek. Narastające załamanie polskiej struktury demograficznej (polegające na kurczeniu się wskaźników reprodukcji oraz liczebności kohort w wieku rozrodczym) stanowi kontekst fundamentalnego problemu polityki natalistycznej. Wyznacza to oś podjętych rozważań.
