Humor has long attracted scholarly interest in many academic disciplines, such as linguistics, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, etc. Among the various types of humor, wúlítóu ‘nonsense’ has greatly influenced Taiwanese’s sense of humor. Based on previous studies on the concept of wúlítóu ‘nonsense’ (e.g., Tan 2000; Jiang 2004; Chueh 2006; Yen 2009; Tao 2010), this study further examines its social-pragmatic functions in Taiwanese verbal interactions, as well as the discourse strategies used to construct it. The methodological approaches used for analysis are informed by conversation analysis, multimodal discourse analysis and interactional linguistics. Major findings are: (a) There are three discourse strategies frequently used to construct wúlítóu ‘nonsense’: theatrical performance, fictional episode and dramatic expression/code. (b) Taiwanese’s frequent use of wúlítóu ‘nonsense’ shows not only their playful attitudes towards their life, but also their dealing with the pressures in life with xiǎoquèxìng ‘the pleasure coming from trivial, but exact daily things’.

Discourse in this paper is represented by the totality of texts (Koller, 2004, p. 18) covering events in former Soviet republics such as Ukraine, Georgia and the Baltic countries. Over 100 texts have been collected from the most popular Russian newspapers, Argumenty i Fakty and Komsomol’skaia Pravda, between 2004 and 2010 in order to compile a “discourse of Russian satellites.” Even though the contemporary Russian press avoids the totalitarian habits of Soviet times such as monoglossia, dysphemisms (language of insults), sanctions and social commands, it still attempts to exercise control over the formation of readers’ opinions. The Russian press tries to channel the reaction of their audience toward disapproval of independent nations. The objective of this article is to summarize those narrative techniques which generate negative responses toward sovereign countries of the former Soviet Union. These techniques, which are called “strategies for discrediting opponents,” include sourcing favorable and unfavorable opinions, humorous framing, ironic statements and constructing a negative background. The means of control are subtle, but they are no less effective than through direct coercion.

The novel portrays the rich linguascape of Silesia through the XX century and contains many Polish — German or Polish — Silesian or Polish — Russian dialogues. The analysis is theoretically grounded in the concept of lingua receptiva, which can be regarded as a vehicle for effective communication between members of diverse language communities while using different languages simultaneously to achieve mutual understanding.

The aim of the article is to present the strategies regulating discourse concerned with the topic of vaccinations in press releases published on the Onet.pl website in the 2017. The authors of the materials posted on this popular website implement a number of strategies based on discretization and the refusal to allow those against vaccinations to expose their views. With respect to particular strategies one may also find popular techniques of social influence or the use of the rhetoric of fear, guilt, and shame which is concerned with persuasive aims. The message is cohesive and coherent, critical towards the voices opposing the reasonableness of vaccinations.

The present article is intended to be an attempt to illuminate the documentary- literary text from the perspective of literary discourse by presenting an aesthetic subject in the focus of discourse practices. The discourse analysis of Elias Canetti’s memoirs would have to uncover communicative strategies of the author’s instance. They provide information that the originality of the author’s version of the worldview is based on the idea of the always-open living space and the fruitful interrelationships of diverse cultural phenomena, which is the logic of the genesis of the alter ego and determined by the narrator.
