At the beginnings of the ’80 in Łódź voivodship number of persons receiving social assistance benefits doubled, and – as authors indicate – they were mostly elderly who do not receive any retirement pensions or receiving them at the minimal statutory level, what makes them extremely poor. Taking these facts as a starting point authors describe living conditions of the elderly from the age cohort 70–74.

Autorki rozpoczynają od konstatacji mówiącej, że w początkach lat 80. w województwie łódzkim podwoiła się liczba osób korzystających ze świadczeń społecznych. Na tę grupę osób składają się głównie emeryci i renciści otrzymujący odpowiednie świadczenia na minimalnym poziomie, co spycha ich poniżej progów ubóstwa. Autorki zwracają też uwagę na to, że jednym z kluczowych czynników kształtujących dobrostan ludzi w wieku 70–74 lata jest poczucie osamotnienia, często odczuwane bardziej dotkliwie, aniżeli poczucie biedy.
