In future, changes in science and society will increasingly demand interdisciplinarily prepared professionals and researchers. Inter/transdisciplinarity has been worked on theoretically and scientifically examined. This review study shows how both approaches are explained, how they are put into practice in doctoral studies, the results of the interdisciplinary approaches applied, but also their limitations and barriers.
The author presents the most important facts relating to the Polish Studies and Comparative Slavonic Philology doctoral studies offered by Palacký University in Olomouc. The author concentrates on the 2003–2015 period, describing the process of course restructuring, its current situation and students’ involvement.
The discussed in the article issues of the significance of doctoral studies are becoming part of a wider economic, political and social international context. A particularly important factor here is the expectations of the labour market determined by contemporary developmental processes and a need to accommodate to challenges of the global competition, the growth in importance of new technologies, as well as growing classification and competence requirements. The purpose of the article is a reconstruction of the role of doctoral studies in Poland, both from the perspective of doctoral faculty advisors, and doctoral students. The authors are answering the question how much the value of doctoral studies is determined as autotelic, and how much as instrumental. Reconstructing the role and the significance of doctoral studies, the authors are using the results of their own research, including, among others, the analysis of motives for starting doctoral studies, as well as the evaluation of their usefulness. On the basis of this research a typology of doctoral students, in which attitudes towards doctoral studies were taken into account, was established. First, the authors are presenting the results of individual, deepened interviews, conducted with managers of doctoral studies at three leading Warsaw universities, next - with doctoral students. The comparison of statements of persons representing universities with views of doctoral students allowed to determine whether the visions of doctoral studies of these two groups representing the supply side (managers) and the demand side (doctoral students) are similar.

The article presents the problem of elite form of higher education in Poland, namely: realized most often in the cooperation with foreign universities and schools of public administration. They serve different functions to the society and set themselves tasks which are not realized by other educational institutions. The main purpose of the paper is to answer the question if and to what extent the distinguished forms of education educate elite members to be, who will affect the most important social, cultural and political processes in Poland. It is an important question as the social transformations, including the university transformations which take place under the influence of such processes as commodification of education or commercialization, are significant for self-identification of both experts (teachers, researchers, masters) and students. The choice of the subject was primarily due to neglecting the issue of elitism in the contemporary pedagogical and sociological discourse in Poland or its one-dimension interpretation. The paper aims at highlighting the multiplicity of possible elite forms of higher education, focusing mainly on doctoral studies. However, in a wider perspective, the paper undertakes the problem of redefining the concepts of elite and elitism in the contemporary society.
According to strategic objectives of European Union the Doctoral studies in Higher Education Policy represents a crucial human resource for knowledge based innovation economy. The results of the empirical research about careers of doctorate holders show the effectiveness of this priority in Poland
The article presents the results of a research study on the situation of contemporary post-graduate students. Focus group interviews helped obtain post-graduate students’ opinions about the conditions of starting and continuing doctoral studies. The discussion focused on three main topics: motivation to start doctoral studies, the quality and conditions of doctoral studies evaluation, and the advantages and disadvantages of undertaking doctoral studies. Analysis of the respondents’ statements shows that the motivations for starting doctoral studies vary strongly. Common in the experience of the interlocutors is a lack of stability in life (including financialstability), insecurity of employment, overload, and stress. However, post-graduate students presented also positive aspects of doctoral studies, e.g.: social prestige or the possibility of development. The last part of the article describes issues related to problems and pathological phenomena (such as ‘punctasis’/‘points, credits collecting’), pointing to systemic and individual limitations affecting the situation of doctoral students in the Polish tertiary education system.
The massification of higher education has changed the role and value of study and led to dissemination of doctoral studies. This article starts with an overview of the law-based and historical changes of the idea of third cycle studies, reflected in their organisation in Poland. We will indicate incoherence noticeable between curriculum and expected skills and knowledge. The perspective will let us outline some problems related to importance and significance of PhD studies in graduates careers – academic, as well as professional in general. In this context, we can also perceive current consequences in terms of identity of doctoral students and their place at the university.

Academic regalia, symbols and ceremonies are an important element of university reality. The ruling force here is the tradition and continuity of the preservation of symbols since the Middle Ages. The awarding of academic degrees and titles in the XXI century is still associated with a consistent structure during which specific rituals – characteristic for University or even each field of study – take place. They become an exemplification of prestige in the academic world, the position of professors, as well as other social groups, and crystallize the place in the hierarchy of various individuals and groups of people, as well as the academic capital that they represent. In this article, I will focus on this initial level of academic career which is a doctorate and especially at this ceremonial or symbolic ritual of passage – the doctoral promotion.
Between 1952–1990 a lower academic degree could be earned in a number of ways, two of which were post graduate studies (aspirantura) and doctoral studies. The organisation of post graduate studies followed the Soviet solution available from 1951. Participants obtained a title of a science candidate. Doctoral studies, implemented in 1958, allowed participants to earn a title of a doctor. The two ways discussed in the paper differed significantly but shared a common feature: the solu tions which they implemented served firstly, to recruit candidates ready to engage in research and academic teaching; secondly, to ensure the social and economic society availability of professionals with qualifications exceeding the knowledge gained at an institution of higher education; thirdly, to provide institutional scientific guardianship to doctoral students working on their dissertations; fourthly, to realise the educational programme prepared for doctoral students who were adequately prepared for post graduate studies; and fifthly, to precisely define the status of scientific researchers working on scientific dissertations and to establish the principles upon which they received financial and social assistance. In both cases, education leading to a scientific degree differed in stability. While those regarding aspirantura were largely constant and durable, doctoral studies lacked this durability. The elements which were taken into consideration when examining the latter form of PhD studies included in particular: determination of the purpose of offering doctoral studies, forms in which doctoral studies were conducted (both for employed and non-employed candidates), recruitment and admission requirements, and the conditions in which the course was conducted. The whole process was also found to be subject to the changing scope of rights and duties of doctoral students, their tutors as well as supervisory bodies responsible for doctoral studies.
The aim of this text is to provide an answer to the following question: is the current form that doctoral programmes (third cycle studies) take at the Polish higher education institutions is valid? The text is based on the results of two surveys: Doctoral Candidates 2015 and 2011 (to the lesser extent), as well as on the data of Central Statistical Office. The results are presented according to the following categorical lines: finances and stipend-related problems, quality of teaching and didactics, research, collegial self-government and other matters. In the final part of this text the recommendations for improvement of third cycle studies are presented.

In the academic year 2015/2016, there were more than 40,000 people studying for a Ph.D. in Poland. Set against the scale known from before the education boom of the 1990s, the figure is staggering. The fact that so many young people (not all of them young, as there is no age limit on education opportunities on any level) wish to be ever better educated and work their way up the academic ladder, may well be seen as a positive development. However, if public debate on the matter is anything to go by, it would seem that there are more downsides than advantages to this state of affairs: the devaluation of Master’s degrees, the mass character of the education process and the absence of genuine master-disciple relationships are but few of the disadvantages. Does the university matter, does it inform students’ life choices? It seemed worthwhile to get to know the answers to these questions, using the circumstances of Ph.D. students, their financial status, and the economic, social and cultural capital at their disposal, as reference points. Asking these questions gave me a pretext and a reason to undertake research in Poland as well as the best universities in the world (Harvard University, University of Oxford, Peking University and others). The survey of doctoral students, carried out between 2010 and 2013, is part of a more extensive programme concerning the education of social elites worldwide and bringing about social change. The programme in question comprises a variety of comparative and cultural themes: the manner in which doctoral studies are structured and conducted, the master-disciple relationship (not least in its historical aspect), the quality of education offered, social structure and its determinants. The research cited in the text comes from my book Kształcenie elit społecznych? Studia doktoranckie w Polsce jako forma i potrzeba konstruowania zapoznanego mitu [The Shaping of Social Elites? Doctoral Studies in Poland as a Form of Constructing an Obsolete Myth, and Expressing the Need for such a Myth]. The book is a complete report that covers many more problems and questions about doctoral studies’ system in Poland.

Całość wniosków z badań zawiera oddana do druku monografia pt. Kształcenie elit społecznych? Studia doktoranckie w Polsce jako forma i potrzeba konstruowania zapoznanego mitu.
In the article an analysis of the results of the competition on the most prodoctoral university in Poland - Prodok 2012 is made, divided into separate areas (social security, supporting the activity of young scientists, influence of doctoral students on the process of education, autonomy, other). Also recommendations of changes that could contribute towards the improvement in the quality of education and the financial situation of doctoral students at Polish universities are presented.

W ocenie autorów, organy administracji publicznej (I i II instancji) dopuściły się szeregu uchybień proceduralnych skutkujących potrzebą wyeliminowania wydanych decyzji administracyjnych z obrotu prawnego.

This commentary raises the issues of proceedings conducted by faculty recruitment commissions and other university bodies. The Authors agree with the position presented by the Wojewódzki Sąd Administracyjny and the decision taken. According to the Authors, the public administration bodies (first and second instance) committed a number of procedural shortcomings that resulted in the need to eliminate administrative decisions issued from legal trading. The commented judgment is a valuable source of knowledge for parties to proceedings and public administration bodies, university bodies.
The article presents the analysis of scientific and technological activities of higher education pedagogical institutions of Ukraine at the end of 2014 according to the staffing situation, the functioning of postgraduate and doctoral studies and the availability of the valid specialized academic councils on thesis defense, according to students’ research works aiming at young scientists’ training. The criteria of evaluation of scientific work results of the university faculty and the ways to encourage young teachers to do the research work through postgraduate and doctoral studies and the defense of the thesis as the final result. We raised a problem of training young scientists int higher education pedagogical institutions of Ukraine as a powerful intellectual force, which determines the scientific future of the country. The main directions of scientific and technical activities of the universities aimed at foreign cooperation within the country and the world were defined as well. Modern guidelines for forming the international image of universities in foreign experience (the USA and European countries) have been outlined.
Cel badań. Celem prowadzonym badań była analiza statusu prawnego doktoranta (uczestnika studiów doktoranckich) w świetle reformy szkolnictwa wyższego i nauki, w zakresie sposobu organizacji kształcenia, rekrutacji, praw i obowiązków oraz postępowania w sprawie nadania stopnia doktora nauk prawnych. Metoda badań. W toku prowadzonych badań wykorzystana została metoda dogmatyczno-prawna oraz elementy empirycznej w zakresie przeprowadzonej analizy orzecznictwa. Uwzględniona została materia normatywna, w szczególności przepisy ustawy – Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym i nauce, i przepisy ją wprowadzające, a także przepisy dotychczasowej ustawy – Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym.

The object of the study. The purpose of the research was to analyze the legal status of PhD students in the light of the reform of higher education, in the areas of: the organization of education, recruitment, rights and obligations and proceedings in the matter of conferring the title of Doctor of the Juridical Science. Test method. In the course of the research, the dogmatic and legal method as well as empirical method elements in the scope of analysis of case law were used. The normative matter was taken into account, in particular the provisions of the Act - Law on higher education and science and regulations introducing it, as well as the hitherto existing Act - Law on higher education. Results. The research has shown that the legal situation of PhD students depends on the academic year in which they started their doctoral studies, as well as on the day on which they initiated proceedings in the matter of conferring the title of doctor of legal sciences. Proceedings to award doctoral degrees may take place not only according to "old" or "new rules", but also in mixed modes, in which the rules are modified only in certain areas. Conclusions. PhD students should pay attention to the varied legal status. Due to the changed rules and numerous exceptions to the changes introduced, it is important to make sure on which day the proceedings were initiated and whether all formalities in this respect have been complied with. In addition, in the event of delays in the process of creating a doctoral thesis, it is worth paying attention to the deadlines, after which the proceedings will be discontinued or terminated.
The publication critically analyzed the legal regulations related to the provision of financial support for participants of doctoral studies in Poland. The aim of the article was to indicate the possibility of abuse of this help by people who already have academic degrees and are participants in doctoral studies. The analysis covered legal regulations of various rank (laws, and other downstream regulations) referring to third-cycle studies and particular types of scholarships for PhD students. Therefore, the analysis and exegesis of legal norms, referring to various benefits of financial support, using different methods of interpreting the law was made. The ”adequate application“ of the provisions on financial support for students with regard to PhD students was examined. The relationship between the constitutional principle of autonomy of higher education and the rights and freedoms of individuals (doctoral students) was considered. According to the authors, when interpreting the norms in force de lege lata, one should refer to their historical context and to their teleological interpretation rather than grammatical interpretation. De lege ferenda pointed out the need to ensure greater clarity of legal regulations in the field of science and higher education, and also to shape them in such a way that they would be in accordance with the norms of constitutional rank.

The article attempts to estimate the efficiency of doctoral studies in 58 public higher education institutions in Poland from 2010 to 2015. The authors employ a hybrid model combining radial and non-radial approaches as part of the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. An assessment of both the direct and indirect effectiveness of doctoral studies has been made: from the beginning of studies to obtaining a doctoral degree, and from the start of studies to the launch of a doctoral programme respectively. In the case of both efficiency and effectiveness measurements, two empirical models with different research periods were used. In the first empirical model, the efficiency and effectiveness of studies were estimated at their nominal duration (four years), while in the second model the research period was extended by one year. Only four universities proved to be efficient in the first model and five in the second, while none turned out to be fully effective. Probably the higher level of efficiency is due to high competition between universities in the largest urban conurbations. On the other hand, the effectiveness of doctoral studies is to an extent correlated with the type of higher education institution (technical, pedagogical, etc.). Extending the research period by one year has a greater impact on the efficiency rather than effectiveness of doctoral studies.

W artykule podjęto próbę oszacowania efektywności studiów doktoranckich w 58 publicznych szkołach wyższych w latach 2010–2015 za pomocą modelu hybrydowego (łączącego podejście radialne i nieradialne) należącego do nieparametrycznej metody DEA. Natomiast skuteczność studiów doktoranckich jest w pewien sposób skorelowana z grupą, do której należy dana szkoła wyższa (uczelnia techniczna, pedagogiczna itp.). Wydłużenie o rok okresu badawczego wpływa w większym stopniu na poziom skuteczności niż efektywności studiów doktoranckich.
In this article, I present and analyze selected results of a qualitative study being part of an international research project concerning the role of doctoral studies in teachers' professional and personal development. I particularly focus on the value of doctorate in the practice of teaching from the point of view of 28 Polish teachers who have obtained the doctoral degree and work at different types of school. The research results indicate that most of the interviewed teachers evaluate the knowledge, skills and competence gained during the doctoral studies as very useful in their work (e.g. in teaching students through research, in planning and implementing innovations, in working with gifted students, or in internal evaluation). However, more than half of the respondents (17 teachers) point out that the value of their doctorate is belittled by headmasters and other teachers, who do it e.g. by publicly negating their pedagogical skills, excluding them from the school's social life, or failing to pay them for the work done. These findings are discussed in the context of current challenges for the teacher education and teacher professional development.
Uniwersytet w swoich założeniach to wspólnota nauczycieli i uczniów poszukujących prawdy (Wróblewski 2011).

An underlying principle of the university assignment is to function as a community for discover a truth. Nowadays, the social, economical, and cultural changes significantly influenced the role and function of the university. Lots of changes arose as a result of the adapting necessity of Polish universities to legal regulations which function in other members of EU. Doctoral studies are the challenge in a time of the university crisis. In present manuscript the main trends of modification the university organization, as well as the background of doctoral studies organization, and a suggestion to involve a subject “The select issues for high school didactics of the third degree studies” in third degree studies, are presented.
