Jednym z celów integracji europejskiej jest wyrównywanie poziomu dobrobytu w krajach członkowskich. Na dobrobyt społeczny składa się wiele czynników, stąd istnieje wiele propozycji jego pomiaru. W artykule dokonano przeglądu tych miar oraz przeprowadzono badanie z wykorzystaniem Indeksu dobrobytu (Prosperity Index) opracowanego przez brytyjski Instytut Legatum. W oparciu o składowe indeksu z lat 2007-2017 przeanalizowano odległości euklidesowe pomiędzy starymi (UE-15) i nowymi (UE-13) członkami Unii Europejskiej oraz przeprowadzono analizę skupień metodą hierarchiczną. Celem badania było sprawdzenie zmian dystansu pomiędzy krajami UE pod względem poziomu dobrobytu rozumianego szerzej niż w kategoriach dochodowych. Badanie wykazało, że w ramach całej UE można zaobserwować spadek średniego dystansu, natomiast nastąpił wzrost zróżnicowania w ramach grup UE-15 i UE-13, choć, jak wynika z analizy skupień, nie na tyle wyraźny, żeby mówić o zatarciu się różnic pomiędzy grupami czy ich przemieszaniu.

European integration is supposed to support and equalize the level of welfare in the member countries. According to the “beyond GDP” idea, there are many attempts to capture factors that are important in the context of countries’ prosperity. The paper includes a review of the measures of social welfare and a study based on the Legatum Prosperity Index conducted for the EU countries in the period 2007-2017 with the usage of Euclidean distances and hierarchical cluster analysis. The aim of the research is to examine the changes in distance between old and new member states of the EU in terms of the level of prosperity understood more broadly than just income. The study shows that the average distance for the EU decreases, while the diversity within the EU-15 and EU-13 groups increases, but not to the extent enough to justify talking about the disappearance of differences between groups or their mixing.
