Edward Leszczyński`s Atlantis and Jolanta stage works are characteristic of Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolic dramas of topos theatrum mundi. The motif that the world is a theatre in the dramaturgy of the Belgian writer was closely connected with a theory that the existence of human beings is governed by mysterious Fate. Leszczyński contrasted the force of Fate with the power of Gods divided into opposing forces, expressing ambivalent values. While divine interferences are presented in a relatively direct way, Fate is referred to very subtly. Its role is updated by the suggestions of the heroes' intuitions.
