Most readings of Tayib Salih’s “Season of migration to the north” have focused on Mustafa Saeed and the nameless narrator, both male characters, and they have largely avoided a politically radical reading of the novel. This article attempts to present the female character, Hosna, as the revolutionary par excellence, following Lacan and Slavoj Žižek’s reading of Antigone. Through Žižek’s distinction between the act and action, this article argues that Hosna’s deed at the end of the novel, murder and suicide, is not just an action out of hopelessness but rather an act that aims to make a new social order possible. We will try to connect Žižek’s distinction between act and action to Benjamin’s distinction between divine violence and mythic violence and Lacan’s idea of “Thing-directed desire” (Marc De Kesel 245). By doing so, this article aims to put the extreme violence of Hosna in a new light and argues against the readings that simply ignore her act as an extreme form of violence and fail to see it in a broader framework of philosophical and sociological understanding.

Im Aufsatz verfolge ich das Ziel, das Schaffen von Marquise de Sade aus dem Gesichtspunkt der Philosophie und Soziologie zu interpretieren. Der Text ist auch eine Polemik gegen die in Polen allgemein anerkannten Interpretationen des Schaffens von de Sade. Indem ich den Marquise als proto-postmodernen Autor darstelle, beabsichtige ich aufzuzeigen, dass es ihm gelungen ist, authentische Tendenzen der modernen westlichen Kultur zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Indem Sade versuchte, endgültige Konsequenzen aus der Abkehr der westlichen Kultur von der christlichen Moraltradition zu ziehen, hegte er die Überzeugung, dass die Abwendung von metaphysischen Ideen die ganze menschliche Existenz auf die sinnliche Dimension des Lebens reduzieren sollte. Analog dazu bildet gegenwärtig die Entwicklung der Pornographie und der auf erotischen Inhalten basierenden Massenkultur eine virtuelle Welt der Begierde und des ununterbrochenen Spiels mit menschlicher Sinnlichkeit. Die philosophische Grundlage dieser Entwicklung bildet ausgerechnet das Schaffen von Marquise. Letztendlich schafft die gegenwärtige postmoderne Kultur eine soziale Wirklichkeit, in der der Mensch auf bewusste Weise die Sinne über die Ideen herrschen lässt – und nicht umgekehrt.

The aim of the present article is an interpretation of the works of Marquise de Sade from a philosophical and sociological point of view. The text also poses a polemic with the interpretations of Sade’s work, which are generally acclaimed in Poland. Introducing the Marquis as a proto-postmodernist, I will try to indicate that the he effectively managed to express the authentic tendencies of the contemporary Western culture. Trying to face the final consequences of the departure from the Christian traditions and principles of social integration, Sade believed that the departure from metaphysical ideas should limit the human life to its sensual dimension. Likewise, the contemporary expansion of pornography and the mass culture based on erotic content builds a virtual world of lust and a persisting game of human sensuality. The philosophical foundation of this development constitutes the work of de Sade. In conclusion, the contemporary postmodern Western culture creates a social reality in which human intentionally allows her/his senses to dominate ideas – and not vice versa.

Celem artykułu jest interpretacja twórczości Markiza de Sade’a z punktu widzenia filozofii i socjologii. Tekst stanowi też polemikę z powszechnie uznanymi w Polsce interpretacjami twórczości Sade’a. Przedstawiając Markiza jako proto-postmodernistę wskazuję, że udało mu się wyrazić autentyczne tendencje współczesnej kultury zachodniej. Usiłując wyciągnąć ostateczne konsekwencje odejścia zachodniej kultury od chrześcijański tradycji moralnej oraz zasad integracji społecznej, Sade żywił przekonanie, że porzucenie metafizycznych idei powinno sprowadzić całą ludzką egzystencję do zmysłowego wymiaru życia. Współczesny rozwój pornografii oraz kultury masowej opartej na treściach erotycznych tworzy – analogicznie – wirtualny świat pożądania oraz nieustającej gry ze zmysłowością ludzką. Filozoficznym fundamentem tego rozwoju jest właśnie twórczość Markiza. Ostatecznie współczesna kultura ponowoczesna tworzy rzeczywistość społeczną, w której człowiek w sposób świadomy pozwala zmysłowości panować nad ideami – a nie odwrotnie.
