Artykuł ma na celu zapoznanie czytelnika z przemianami społeczno-kulturowymi i demograficznymi determinującymi działalność Niemców na Dolnym Śląsku w okresie ich największej aktywności w latach 50. ubiegłego wieku oraz w rzeczywistości III RP. Autorka poddaje analizie porównawczej cztery obszary działalności Niemców w obu opisywanych okresach: niemiecką oświatę, media, działalność kulturalną oraz organizacyjną. Wskazuje czynniki wpływające na rozwój działalności Niemców w latach 50. oraz na zmiany tej działalności zachodzące po 1989 roku. Konkluduje, że wskutek przemian politycznych, społecznych i demograficznych obecna sytuacja Niemców na Dolnym Śląsku jest odwróceniem ich położenia z połowy XX wieku.

The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to the social, cultural and demographic transformations which determine the presence of the Germans in the Lower Silesia in the period of the highest level of their activity in the 1950’s and in the reality of the Third Republic. The author performs a comparative analysis of four areas of the German activity in both previously mentioned periods: the German education, media, cultural and organisational activity. She identifes the factors which affected the development of the German activity in the 1950’s as well as the changes in this activity which have been occurring in the period of the Third Republic. The author concludes that due to political, social and demographic change, the present condition of the Germans in the Lower Silesia is a reversed image of their situation from the middle of the 20th century.
